Routine wellness care can help reduce the risk of some diseases and catch problems earlier, but it cannot prevent every illness. Five practical concerns for dog and cat owners are dental disease, excess weight and diabetes risk, vaccine-preventable infections, heartworm, and intestinal parasites. They are not a definitive ranking of the most prevalent diseases in either species; your veterinarian can tailor care to your pet’s age, health, location, and exposure.

What can routine wellness care do?

Regular veterinary examinations give you a chance to discuss changes in your pet’s health and review prevention. Pets may hide early signs of illness, so checkups can help identify concerns before they advance. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says, “Regular preventive care is critical to keep pets healthy and improve both quality and length of life.”

A wellness visit is not a guarantee against disease. It helps a veterinarian assess your pet and recommend appropriate steps, which may include an examination, dental assessment, weight and nutrition advice, vaccination review, or parasite testing and prevention. What is appropriate depends on the individual animal.

Five disease concerns to discuss with your veterinarian

1. Dental and periodontal disease

Dental and periodontal disease are common concerns in dogs and cats. A veterinarian can assess your pet’s mouth as part of routine care; visible tartar or bad breath are reasons to bring up dental health, but appearance alone cannot establish how severe a problem is. The AVMA identifies dental assessment as part of routine care and lists periodontal disease among common disease categories. AVMA and JAVMA material on disease prevalence and preventive care.

Ask your veterinarian for a home-care plan suited to your pet. Toothbrushing may support dental care, but it does not replace professional assessment.

2. Excess weight and diabetes risk

Excess weight matters for overall health and is a risk factor for diabetes. The AVMA National Pet Week page reports that 52.7% of dogs and 57.9% of cats in the United States are overweight or obese; the page does not state the year for these figures, so they should not be read as a newly conducted 2026 survey. Ask your veterinarian what feeding approach and healthy weight are appropriate for your pet. Weight management supports health and may reduce risk; it cannot guarantee that a pet will not develop diabetes. The AVMA also explains diabetes risk factors and veterinary guidance on feeding and weight. AVMA: Diabetes in pets.

3. Vaccine-preventable infectious diseases

Vaccination can protect pets against contagious and potentially deadly diseases. There is no single schedule that fits every dog and cat: veterinarians consider which vaccines are core or noncore, as well as the animal’s lifestyle, location, and health. Review your pet’s vaccination needs with their veterinarian rather than applying a universal schedule. AVMA pet care guidance and AVMA: Vaccinating Your Pet.

4. Heartworm disease

Heartworm can be fatal. Ask your veterinarian about your pet’s risk, whether testing is appropriate, and a prevention plan suited to your location and animal. Do not choose a heartworm medication for your pet without individualized veterinary advice. AVMA: Heartworm Disease.

5. Intestinal parasites

Intestinal parasites are common in cats and dogs. The AVMA’s educational material recommends testing and year-round parasite control, with decisions guided by the pet’s circumstances. Ask which testing and prevention are appropriate; no single over-the-counter product is suitable for every animal, and not all parasites are visible. Use good hygiene around pet waste and contact a veterinarian about concerning symptoms. AVMA: Intestinal Parasites in Cats & Dogs.

What should a pet wellness visit cover?

Use the visit to review your pet’s health and prevention needs with the veterinarian. Depending on the animal, useful topics include:

  • Changes in appetite, behavior, activity, or other signs you have noticed.
  • Oral health and an appropriate home dental-care plan.
  • Weight, feeding, and exercise.
  • Vaccines suited to the pet’s health, lifestyle, and location.
  • Heartworm risk, testing, and prevention.
  • Intestinal parasite testing and control based on exposure and health history.

Bring questions about your pet’s daily routine and any prevention already in use. The veterinarian can use that context, along with the examination and medical history, to make recommendations for that animal.

Why prevention plans differ between pets

A puppy or kitten, an older pet, and an animal with an ongoing health condition may need different advice. Geography and exposure also matter, particularly when discussing vaccines and parasites. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all calendar or product, ask the veterinarian to explain which risks apply to your pet and when to revisit the plan. AVMA guidance discusses pet care and vaccination decisions in this individualized context. AVMA pet care and AVMA vaccination guidance.

When to contact a veterinarian

Contact your veterinarian when you notice a concerning change or have questions about symptoms, dental health, weight, vaccines, or parasite control. General information cannot diagnose an individual pet or determine treatment. Regular checkups can support prevention and earlier attention to problems, but they do not eliminate the need to seek care when something seems wrong.
