If your cat seems to chew at nothing or snap at invisible flies, the movement is sometimes called fly-biting and can be associated with focal seizure activity. But air-chewing is a behavior, not a diagnosis: mouth pain and other medical causes are possible too. A veterinarian can assess your cat and decide whether further tests are needed.
What can make a cat chew the air?
Fly-biting and possible focal seizures
Some cats have episodes of snapping at the air as if catching invisible flies. VCA describes this behavior as potentially associated with focal seizures. Episodes may begin suddenly while a cat is resting. A cat may appear aware, and may sometimes be distracted, but apparent awareness alone does not rule seizure activity in or out. VCA Animal Hospitals explains fly-biting and focal seizures in cats.
Oral discomfort
Mouth disease can be painful and may lead to unusual mouth movements. Other signs can include bad breath, drooling, sores or other visible changes in the mouth, and reduced appetite. Those signs warrant a veterinary assessment, but air-chewing by itself does not prove a dental problem. Merck Veterinary Manual describes signs of mouth disorders in cats.
Chewing or eating non-food objects
Pica means persistently chewing and consuming non-food substances. It may be relevant if your cat is actually chewing or swallowing objects, but it does not, by itself, explain chewing at empty air. The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine overview of unusual eating habits distinguishes this behavior from air-chewing.

How a veterinarian investigates air-chewing
The movement alone cannot establish its cause. VCA describes suspected fly-biting as a diagnosis of exclusion: a veterinarian may examine the cat and consider tests to rule out other explanations before concluding that seizure activity is responsible.
VCA notes that an EEG is the only way to definitively determine whether fly-biting is caused by seizure activity. Because episodes can be intermittent and unpredictable, obtaining an EEG may be impractical. The veterinarian can advise whether an examination or other tests are appropriate.

A complete oral examination can help assess possible mouth problems. Merck notes that pain may cause a cat to resist examination, and some cats need sedation for a complete assessment. Do not force your cat’s mouth open to try to diagnose the problem at home.

- Arrange a veterinary assessment if the behavior is new or recurring. Contact your veterinarian sooner if it is accompanied by drooling, bad breath, visible mouth changes, reduced appetite, or other changes in your cat.
- Note what you observe. Record when episodes happen, how the movement looks, and whether you notice other changes. This gives your veterinarian a clearer description.
- Take a brief video if it is safe and convenient. A recording may help show the movement, but it cannot diagnose the cause. Do not delay care to get one.
- Leave mouth examination and diagnosis to the veterinarian. A painful cat may resist handling, and a complete oral examination may require sedation.
Seek urgent veterinary advice if your cat has trouble breathing, collapses, has prolonged or repeated seizure-like episodes, or worsens rapidly.
