Senior pets do best with care built around their individual health, habits, and home—not assumptions about what is “normal” for age. The five practical steps below help you spot changes, plan veterinary care, and make daily life easier for an older dog or cat. They support, but do not replace, advice from your veterinarian.
How do I know when my pet is a senior?
There is no single age that defines “senior” for every pet. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) uses the last quarter of a dog’s estimated lifespan as the senior stage; for cats, it defines senior as older than 10 years. A pet’s size, health history, and condition also matter when a veterinarian plans care. AAHA’s central principle is that “The senior dog or cat requires a tailored healthcare plan including preventive, diagnostic, and treatment protocols that are specific to the aging animal’s physiologic needs.”

1. Schedule regular checkups and ask what screening fits
AAHA recommends veterinary exams every six months for senior dogs older than 7 years and cats older than 10, even when they appear healthy. These are recommendations for routine care, not a guarantee that every pet needs the same tests at every visit. Your veterinarian can adjust the schedule to your pet’s history, current health, and exam findings.

A senior visit may include a physical and dental assessment and a discussion of nutrition, movement, behavior, and changes in hearing or vision. AAHA’s diagnostic guidance lists a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry, and urinalysis every 6–12 months for senior dogs and cats. Ask which tests are appropriate for your pet and what a result would help the veterinary team monitor or investigate.

2. Track changes instead of assuming they are age
A gradual shift can be easy to miss when it happens at home. Keep notes about appetite, thirst, weight, energy, grooming, play, behavior, bathroom habits, and willingness or ability to move. A short video of a pet walking, using stairs, jumping, or getting into a litter box can help your veterinary team assess mobility and possible pain.

Progressive lethargy, appetite or thirst changes, weight loss, mobility or behavior changes, and wounds that do not heal can accompany disease. None of these signs identifies a cause on its own, and a single observation is not a diagnosis. Contact your veterinarian about persistent or concerning changes rather than writing them off as inevitable aging.

3. Make movement and access easier at home
Look for a specific obstacle in your pet’s usual routine—slippery flooring, a high step, a difficult jump, or a litter-box entrance that has become awkward. Choose a change that fits the animal and the space, and check that it stays stable and is easy to use.

For an older dog
- A ramp or pet stairs may make a bed, vehicle, or favorite resting spot easier to reach.
- Nonslip flooring or traction aids can help with slick surfaces; orthopedic bedding may offer a more accessible resting place.
- A harness or sling may assist with supported movement when your veterinarian recommends one and shows you how to use it safely.
For an older cat
- A low-sided litter box can reduce the effort needed to get in and out.
- Place necessities where the cat can reach them without a difficult jump, and consider stable steps or a ramp to a favored perch.
- Provide a comfortable, accessible resting area and make the path to it less slippery where needed.
These adjustments address practical access; they do not establish or treat the reason movement has changed. Discuss new or worsening difficulty with your veterinarian. AAHA lists possible adaptations in its healthy senior pet guidance and senior-pet care recommendations.
4. Keep dental health and eating comfort on the checklist
Dental care involves both professional assessment and appropriate care at home. Ask your veterinarian how often your pet’s mouth should be checked and whether toothbrushing or a dental diet is suitable. A toothbrush or chew is not a substitute for a dental examination.

Raise bad breath, difficulty eating, facial swelling, or pawing at the mouth with your veterinarian. These signs merit assessment; they do not, by themselves, identify the underlying problem. AAHA covers dental care among its senior-pet veterinary recommendations.

5. Personalize food, weight, enrichment, and comfort
There is no one senior-pet diet or supplement plan that suits every animal. Ask your veterinarian to review your pet’s body condition, weight trend, health issues, and current food. A therapeutic diet may be appropriate for a particular chronic condition, but diet changes and supplements should be guided by the pet’s needs rather than age alone.
Older pets can also develop cognitive or behavior changes. Tell your veterinarian what has changed and when. Depending on the animal, enrichment such as food puzzles or interactive play may be part of a support plan. Adjust the activity to your pet’s abilities and comfort, and seek veterinary input when a change is new, persistent, or affecting daily life.
AAHA’s recommendations address individualized nutrition and behavior support. The guideline also notes the scale of some age-related concerns: its 2023 executive summary says senior dogs and cats represent 44% of the pet population, while AAHA’s 2022 senior-pet evaluation guidance reports that more than 60% of cats have osteoarthritis in at least one joint. These figures refer to different populations and should not be taken as a prediction for an individual pet.

What signs of pain should I raise with a veterinarian?
Changes in movement, activity, behavior, or willingness to do familiar things are useful observations to share, especially if they progress or interfere with daily routines. Record what happens and, when possible, bring a video to the appointment. A veterinarian can assess the whole picture; no single change confirms pain or its cause.
