Both the Prague Ratter and Chihuahua are tiny companion dogs, but their official breed standards measure size differently and describe distinct temperament traits. The FCI gives the Prague Ratter’s height and an optimal weight; its Chihuahua standard sets a weight range and does not use height. Those standards describe ideals, not guaranteed measurements or personalities for an individual dog.
How do their sizes compare?
Use the registry’s own figures rather than combining the standards into a single scale. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) specifies height and optimal weight for the Prague Ratter, but weight only for the Chihuahua. The American Kennel Club (AKC) publishes a separate U.S. Chihuahua profile.
| Breed and source | Standard or profile size | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Prague Ratter — FCI, 2019 | 21–23 cm at the withers, with a tolerance of ±1 cm; optimal weight approximately 2.60 kg | FCI breed-standard figures; the weight is described as optimal. FCI Prague Ratter standard |
| Chihuahua — FCI, 2019 | 1–3 kg; ideal weight 1.5–2.5 kg | FCI explicitly says height is not considered in the standard. FCI Chihuahua standard |
| Chihuahua — AKC profile, accessed 2026 | 5–8 inches tall; no more than 6 pounds | A separate U.S. registry profile, not an FCI height-and-weight standard. AKC Chihuahua profile |
These are registry descriptions, not population averages or a promise that a particular adult dog will fall exactly within the stated figures. The Chihuahua numbers differ by registry and measurement approach, so check which standard is relevant when comparing dogs or discussing a breeder’s claims.
What temperament does each breed standard describe?
Prague Ratter
The FCI standard describes the Prague Ratter as “Gentle, curious and affectionate,” and says it is “By nature slightly reserved towards strangers but very friendly in the family.” It also characterizes the breed as active, alert and lively. FCI Prague Ratter standard

Chihuahua
The FCI Chihuahua standard describes the breed as “Quick, alert, lively and very courageous.” FCI Chihuahua standard
Both are classified as companion dogs, and both standards mention alertness or liveliness. These are formal breed descriptions, not reliable predictions of how every dog will behave. A dog’s individual temperament and comfort with people depend on the dog; meet the individual and ask how it has been raised and socialized.

What coat and grooming differences matter?
Both breeds have coat variation. The Prague Ratter standard describes either a short, glossy, close-fitting coat or a moderately long coat with fringes on the ears, quarters, tail and chest. The Chihuahua standard recognizes smooth-haired and longhaired varieties. FCI Prague Ratter standard · FCI Chihuahua standard
AKC’s practical brushing guidance is Chihuahua-specific: smooth coats need occasional brushing, while longhaired Chihuahuas should be brushed at least weekly to help prevent tangles and mats. AKC also recommends regular baths for smooth coats, regular nail trims, and checking ears for wax or debris. Dental care should include brushing; a veterinarian may recommend dental treats as part of an individual care plan. AKC Chihuahua profile

The cited sources do not set a Prague Ratter brushing frequency or a complete breed-specific exercise and dental-care plan. For either dog, ask a veterinarian to tailor routine care to its coat, age and health rather than assuming Chihuahua advice applies unchanged to a Prague Ratter.
What exercise and daily handling should owners plan for?
AKC says Chihuahuas enjoy running and playing, can generally get enough exercise in a small space, and benefit from short, slow walks without overexertion. AKC also advises protecting Chihuahuas from cold. These are Chihuahua-specific recommendations, not a measured head-to-head exercise comparison or Prague Ratter guidance. AKC Chihuahua profile

The FCI calls the Prague Ratter active, alert and lively, but the cited standard does not provide a daily exercise prescription. For either breed, choose activity suited to the individual dog and seek veterinary advice if you are unsure how much is appropriate.

AKC describes most Chihuahuas as healthy but lists possible heart problems, including patent ductus arteriosus and mitral valve disease, eye disease, patellar luxation and idiopathic epilepsy. The recommended tests shown on the national breed club guide are a patella evaluation, cardiac exam and ophthalmologist evaluation. AKC Chihuahua profile

For Chihuahua puppies, AKC advises choosing a breeder who routinely performs genetic health screening on breeding stock. When speaking with breeders of either breed, ask which health tests they perform on breeding dogs and request records. The cited sources do not establish a Prague Ratter-specific screening protocol or comparable disease rates for the two breeds, so they do not support a claim that one is healthier or less costly to care for.
Which breed may suit your household?
The standards help describe each breed but cannot settle an individual match. Use them as a starting point, then assess the dog in front of you and the practical needs of your home.
Quick Recap
- Consider the Prague Ratter’s stated temperament description if you value a dog described as affectionate with family and somewhat reserved with strangers. That wording is an FCI standard description, not a guarantee.
- Consider the Chihuahua profile if AKC’s specific guidance on small-space play and short, slow walks is useful to your routine, while taking care not to overexert the dog or expose it to cold.
- Compare coat variety, not just breed name. A longhaired dog needs a different brushing routine from a smooth-coated one; the cited weekly brushing guidance applies to longhaired Chihuahuas.
- Ask for health records. For Chihuahua breeding stock, ask about the screening AKC identifies; for either breed, request the breeder’s test records and discuss health questions with a veterinarian.
- Meet the individual dog. Neither standard establishes a particular adult’s exact size, personality or future health.
