If you are interviewing a specialist, considering the credential, or trying to understand the role, these five questions can clarify the person’s experience, the credentialing pathway, and how dental care is shared with the supervising veterinarian.
1. What made you pursue the VTS Dentistry credential, and what work prepared you for it?
This opens a conversation about motivation and experience without assuming that every specialist followed the same route. Ask which parts of their prior dentistry work proved most useful, and invite them to distinguish personal experience from formal credential requirements.
2. What parts of the AVDT application and mentorship process took the most planning?
The relevant specialty academy is the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians (AVDT). NAVTA describes VTS credentials generally as certification through a NAVTA/CVTS-approved specialty academy. AVDT’s published overview describes a two-year mentorship program involving training, case logs, and other credentials. It specifies at least 50 qualifying dentistry cases, but the academy warns that its overview can change; candidates should use the credential packet for their graduating year rather than assume the overview is a permanent checklist.
AVDT describes a two-stage qualifying exam after a candidate’s credentials packet passes: a remote written test and a hands-on practical assessment. Its exam page says the exam is offered once yearly. Ask the specialist what required the most time or coordination in their own application, then verify current requirements and scheduling directly with AVDT.

AVDT names Veterinary Dentistry for the Small Animal Technician, First Edition, as a study resource. Confirm the edition and availability before seeking a copy.
3. How do you and the supervising veterinarian divide responsibilities during dental procedures?
A VTS Dentistry remains a veterinary technician; the specialty credential does not independently authorize diagnosis, prescribing medication, or dental extractions. AVDT’s Class of 2028 packet states that extractions are oral surgery for a licensed veterinarian. The American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) says diagnosis, treatment, and management of veterinary oral health care are provided and supervised by licensed veterinarians.

AVDC also recognizes that trained technicians may assist with or perform professional cleaning under direct veterinary supervision when local law permits, and supports some additional ancillary dental services for trained technicians. It does not support training technicians to perform oral surgery. The exact tasks a technician may perform depend on applicable local law, training, and supervision; ask how the specialist’s practice handles that division rather than assuming it is identical everywhere.
4. How do dental radiographs, charting, and patient monitoring fit into the care workflow?
This question explores how the specialist contributes to a coordinated dental procedure without implying that every practice uses the same workflow. Ask the interviewee to describe their role in obtaining dental images, maintaining the dental chart, and monitoring the patient, and how findings or concerns are communicated to the veterinarian. Their answer should make clear which responsibilities they perform and which decisions remain with the supervising veterinarian.

5. What advice would you give a technician deciding whether to pursue this credential?
Invite practical advice about preparation, workload, and whether specialty training fits the technician’s goals. Follow up by asking what they would do differently and what they recommend a candidate verify before applying. Separate their personal perspective from AVDT’s published requirements and the rules that apply in the candidate’s jurisdiction.

These are distinct professional roles and credentials, not interchangeable titles. AVDT awards the VTS Dentistry credential to veterinary technicians; the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) is the veterinary dental specialty organization. A VTS demonstrates advanced technician knowledge and training, but it does not make the holder a veterinarian or independently grant authority to diagnose, prescribe, or perform oral surgery.
