The company says it looks for microbial signatures associated with periodontal disease, tooth resorption and bad breath, then provides a digital report with risk scores and care suggestions. It may give you information to discuss with your veterinarian, but a positive result does not confirm disease and a negative result does not rule it out. No firsthand test record is available for this review, so it assesses the product’s stated features and limits rather than claiming a personal trial.
What the Basepaws Oral Health Test is designed to do
Basepaws describes its test as a screen of oral microbes associated with three concerns: periodontal disease, tooth resorption and halitosis (bad breath). The company says its report includes risk scores, personalized at-home recommendations, clinical-care recommendations to discuss with a veterinarian, and information about microbes detected. It explicitly cautions that identifying a microbial signature associated with dental disease is not a diagnosis.
The distinction matters: the test analyzes a swab, not the condition of each tooth or the structures beneath the gums. Basepaws also says that not detecting a signature does not exclude an unknown pathogen or disease caused by something other than pathogenic microbes. The product page says the test does not assess other dental conditions.
Basepaws’ published descriptions do not agree on the number of microbes analyzed: its help center says “1,000+,” while the product page also refers to “600+.” Because the company’s pages are inconsistent, a precise count should not be treated as settled. The current help-center explanation and purchase FAQ provide additional company information.

How the kit works, according to Basepaws
- Register the kit online. Follow the registration instructions supplied with the kit.
- Swab the mouth. Basepaws instructs owners to swab both the gums and teeth for 5–10 seconds. This is the company’s stated collection time, not an independently tested measure of ease or comfort.
- Return the sample. Basepaws says U.S. shipping is free both ways; international shipping is calculated at checkout.
- Review the digital report. The product page states that results arrive 4–6 weeks after the sample reaches the lab. Basepaws recommends sharing the report with a veterinarian at the next wellness visit, or sooner depending on the results.
The page listed the standalone test at $99 when accessed on October 5, 2026, and showed package quantity options. Price and availability can change; confirm the current listing before buying. Basepaws’ help center also says oral-health results are included at no added cost with its Breed + Health Cat DNA Test, so check the live product and bundle details to confirm the purchase route that applies.
Can it diagnose dental disease or replace a vet visit?
No. A microbial screen cannot establish whether a cat has a painful tooth, a periodontal pocket, tooth resorption or another dental lesion. It cannot probe around teeth, assess tooth mobility, inspect roots with radiographs, or determine the appropriate treatment. Basepaws itself says the test is not a diagnosis.

Veterinary guidance describes a comprehensive dental assessment as a tooth-by-tooth visual examination, probing, mobility assessment, radiographic examination and charting. The American Animal Hospital Association says anesthesia-free dentistry is inappropriate because it lacks diagnostic capabilities and creates risks including stress, injury and aspiration. In one study cited in its guideline, 42% of grossly normal feline teeth had clinically important findings on radiographs; that is a finding about teeth in an individual study, not the share of cats with dental disease. See the AAHA feline dental-care guidance.
Dental problems are common, but prevalence figures should not be confused with the test’s performance. Cornell Feline Health Center reports that studies find some form of dental disease in 50–90% of cats older than four. Separately, it estimates tooth resorption in 20–60% of all cats and nearly three-quarters of cats aged five and older. These figures refer to different conditions and populations; neither measures Basepaws’ accuracy. Cornell’s feline dental disease overview explains the broader clinical context.

How to use a result alongside veterinary care
| Option | Purpose | What it assesses | Can it diagnose or rule out disease? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basepaws at-home test | Microbial screening and information to discuss with a veterinarian | Swab-based microbial signatures associated with periodontal disease, tooth resorption and halitosis, as described by Basepaws | No. The company says a detected signature is not a diagnosis and a non-detection does not exclude disease. |
| Veterinary dental assessment | Clinical evaluation and decisions about care | Oral examination; when indicated, probing, mobility assessment, radiographs and charting | Veterinary assessment informs diagnosis and treatment; the appropriate workup depends on the cat. |
| Home oral care, such as brushing | Routine oral-care practice | Ongoing care at home; it does not image roots or diagnose lesions | No. It is not a substitute for veterinary evaluation. |
If you buy the kit, treat the report as a conversation starter rather than a reason to delay an exam. Bring it to your cat’s veterinarian and ask whether an oral examination or further diagnostic work is appropriate. AAHA supports home brushing as an oral-care practice; use a cat toothbrush and cat-safe toothpaste if your veterinarian advises brushing for your cat. The AAHA guide to dental signs, professional care and home care offers general guidance.
Which cats may not be suitable for the test?
Basepaws says the test is not suitable for cats with full-mouth extractions or cats that still have baby teeth. It also advises waiting at least one month after antibiotic treatment before collecting a sample. The company’s reason is that oral antibiotics can reduce mouth bacteria, potentially making a sample unrepresentative of the cat’s usual oral state. Follow the current kit instructions and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure whether timing is appropriate.

What the company’s research claims do—and do not—show
Basepaws reports recruiting veterinary partners and citizen scientists for feline stomatitis work, and recruiting participants for a canine periodontal-disease study. The company describes a future feline stomatitis risk assessment as a research aim. Those statements concern reported recruitment and planned work; they do not establish completed validation findings, and they do not show that the current cat test screens for stomatitis. See Basepaws’ company post on its oral-health research.
The product descriptions and help pages explain what Basepaws intends the test to assess. They do not provide an independently established sensitivity or specificity estimate, or evidence that taking the test improves health outcomes. That leaves the test’s clinical accuracy and practical benefit uncertain from the cited information.
