Start with a recognized feline-practice program, then call clinics to ask how they handle waiting, fearful cats, and emergency care. A designation can help narrow your choices, but the best fit also depends on your cat’s needs, the team’s communication, and practical details such as location and hours.
1. Use a feline-practice program as your starting point
Look for clinics listed by the AAFP/FelineVMA Cat Friendly Practice program or the International Cat Care and ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic program. These programs set clinic-level expectations for cat-specific care. For example, AAFP/FelineVMA criteria include a separate waiting area for cats or alternative arrangements to reduce stress, as well as stress-reduction practices across the visit.

Use the finder relevant to your region, then confirm the clinic’s current listing, services, and arrangements directly. A program designation is a useful filter, not a promise that every cat will feel comfortable or that a particular clinic will suit your circumstances.
2. Call and ask what happens when a cat is anxious
A phone call can reveal more than a label. Ask how the clinic manages the parts of a visit that may be difficult for your cat, from the waiting room through the examination. The clinic setting is one contributor to stress across a visit, and AAHA recommends telling the veterinarian when your cat is scared.

These are practical screening questions, not a formal veterinary checklist. Discuss any medicine or supplement with the veterinarian, and give it only as directed.
3. Compare access, emergency plans, and costs
Cat-specific care matters, but a clinic also needs to be workable for your household. Compare likely options across the following dimensions; ask each clinic directly about its current fees and payment arrangements, because there is no current price comparison established here.

AAHA recommends considering location, accessibility, hours, emergency options, and accreditation when choosing a veterinarian. AAHA accreditation is a broader practice-quality signal, with standards that cover areas such as anesthesia, dentistry, emergency and critical care, medical records, patient care, and surgery; it is not a feline-specific designation by itself. See AAHA’s guide to choosing a veterinarian.

4. Ask about feline experience and how the team communicates
Ask what feline-specific education the team receives and how staff adapt care to a cat’s age, health, behavior, and circumstances. The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines call for regular feline-specific team training and communication that helps gather a thorough patient history. They recommend discussing health, clinical signs, nutrition, behavior, environment, and lifestyle, using open-ended questions to elicit useful detail.

Do not assume there is one universal “cat-friendly vet” credential for individual veterinarians. The programs described here apply to practices, and the cited guidance discusses team training; neither establishes a single individual credential that guarantees good care or personal fit. To verify a veterinarian’s license, check the regulator responsible for veterinary licensing in your jurisdiction.

5. Prepare for the first visit and assess the whole experience
Before you leave home
AAHA recommends allowing time for carrier preparation and practice, using familiar bedding, and keeping your cat secured in the carrier in the car. Tell the clinic ahead of time about fear or a previous difficult visit, and ask whether you can wait in the car until the team is ready. AAHA also mentions feline pheromone spray as an optional preparation consideration; follow its directions and ask the veterinarian whether it is appropriate for your cat. It is not a required step or a guaranteed solution. Read AAHA’s guidance on reducing cat stress at the vet.

During the appointment
Notice whether staff listen to your concerns, explain what they are doing, and adjust their approach to your cat. Consider the full journey: preparation at home, transport, waiting, examination, and any next steps. Clinic design and handling can contribute to distress at different points, so décor or a program label alone cannot tell you how the whole visit will go. One appointment is a practical chance to judge communication and fit, not a predictor of future clinical outcomes.

In its article “How to Reduce Cat Stress at the Vet,” updated July 14, 2026, AAHA advises calling ahead to see whether a practice can accommodate one. It may be an option to discuss if your chosen clinic offers it.
