Start by checking that a food is labelled complete and suits your cat’s life stage, then compare texture, flavour range, feeding practicality and current cost. Four products highlighted in UK guides updated in 2026 are Felix As Good As It Looks Doubly Delicious, IAMS Delights Wet Food Land and Sea Collection, GOURMET Perle Chef’s Collection and Royal Canin Sensory Smell. They are options to investigate—not guaranteed favourites or the result of a uniform comparative feeding trial.
What to check before choosing a food
Complete food and life stage
Look for the word “complete” on the individual product label and check that the food is suitable for your cat’s age and dietary needs. “Wet food” or a tempting flavour description does not establish that a product is nutritionally complete. Which? makes this distinction in its 2026 cat-food comparison, noting that many wet foods are not complete.

Texture, flavour and format
Cats can reject food because of its texture as well as its flavour. Jelly, gravy, pâté, chunks and fillets give you practical variables to try, but no format guarantees acceptance. A mixed-flavour pack can help you see what your cat prefers; variety alone is not proof that the food will be eaten.
Cost and convenience
Compare current cost per serving or per 100 g rather than relying on a pack’s headline price. Marketplace prices and availability can change. Wet food may appeal to some cats but often costs more; dry food is usually cheaper and easier to store and serve, according to Which?. A complete dry food can be as nutritious as a complete wet food, says UK Pet Food in its November 2023 fact sheet. Form alone does not determine completeness or suitability.

How to introduce a new food
- Keep the familiar food in the routine. Offer the new food alongside what your cat already eats, rather than making a sudden switch.
- Start with a small proportion. Which? advises using no more than 25% new food for the first couple of days.
- Increase gradually. Raise the new food’s share over about a week, watching whether your cat eats it and seems well.
- If it is rejected, change one variable. Try another flavour or texture while keeping the familiar food available. A refusal is not proof that all foods of that type will be rejected.
These transition steps follow Which?’s guidance; Catster also suggests offering new food alongside familiar food and trying another flavour or texture when a cat rejects an option.

A sudden change in appetite can be a health issue, not simply fussiness. Contact a vet if your cat suddenly stops eating or seems unwell, particularly if other signs of illness appear. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal number of hours or days to wait, so do not use a fixed timeframe as a substitute for veterinary advice.

What matters more than a “picky cat” label
In Which?’s 2026 comparison, 1,441 of its members took part in a cat-owner survey conducted in October 2025; the article also says Which? spoke with three independent veterinary nutrition experts. Senior lecturer in veterinary nutrition at the University of Surrey Dr Teresa Hollands told Which?, “The most important part of choosing a food is actually monitoring your pet,” adding that plenty of energy and seeming well are signs the pet is on the right track. That advice puts your cat’s condition and behaviour ahead of marketing language or a product’s ranking.
Which? also reports that 43% of cats are overweight or obese, attributing that figure to UK Pet Food. This is a secondary attribution in the article, not an independently verified estimate here. If your cat has a diagnosed health condition or specific dietary need, ask your vet which foods are appropriate rather than choosing on palatability claims alone.
