To make your backyard more appealing to woodpeckers, start with healthy habitat: keep mature trees, retain safe deadwood, and grow native plants suited to your region. You can add a suet feeder as a supplement, but choose a nest box only after checking which woodpeckers occur locally and what they need. These U.S.-oriented tips can improve habitat; they cannot guarantee a visit.

1. Grow native plants and protect mature trees

Native plants support natural food sources, which should remain the foundation of a wildlife-friendly yard. The National Wildlife Federation recommends relying primarily on natural nourishment from native plants (National Wildlife Federation). Choose plants appropriate to your local climate and ecology rather than assuming one list works across the United States.

Mature trees add the trunks and branches woodpeckers use as habitat. National Audubon Society guidance on Downy Woodpeckers identifies mature native trees as useful habitat (Audubon). If you are planting, favor regionally native species; if you already have mature trees, protect them where practical.

2. Leave a safe snag or dead limb

Dead and decaying wood can provide places to forage and, depending on the species and site, potential nesting or roosting cavities. The National Wildlife Federation describes the habitat value of trees and snags through different stages of decay (NWF: Trees and Snags). Cornell Lab of Ornithology recommends leaving safe dead or dying trees where possible in its Pileated Woodpecker account (Cornell Lab of Ornithology).

More Birds Double Suet Cake Feeder, Weather Guard, Steel Construction
  • DOUBLE SUET CAKE FEEDER: This wild bird feeder holds (2) suet cakes in separate cages to attract woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, and other clinging birds to your backyard bird feeding station. Provide food and energy for birds during cold months when food is scarce as the double-sided feeder is made for outdoor use
  • DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Keep the suet cakes dry during rain and snow, as the feeder features a shingle-patterned weather guard roof while the durable powder-coated steel construction resists outdoor elements year-round for lasting performance
  • VERSATILE FEEDING: Supply wild birds with varied nutrition throughout the seasons as this hanging bird feeder station is perfect for suet cakes, small seed cakes, nesting materials in spring, and orange slices in summer
  • EASY TO USE: Hold your suet or birdseed cakes in place, as the double-locking closure system opens effortlessly for quick suet cake replacement. Secure tightly to prevent spillage while keeping bird food fresh and accessible for your backyard birding activities
  • CLINGING BIRDS: Measuring 6.75in (L) x 5in (W) x 7in (H), this feeder has a cage grid with spacing designed specifically for clinging birds like titmouses and nuthatches so they can feed comfortably outdoors

Keep a snag or limb only when it does not create an unacceptable risk to people, buildings, or other structures. If you are unsure whether a tree is safe, ask a qualified arborist to assess it; do not retain hazardous deadwood in hopes of attracting birds.

3. Offer suet in an appropriate feeder

A wire-cage suet feeder with suet cakes is a practical optional food source. The National Wildlife Federation describes suet feeders as a favorite for woodpeckers (NWF: Bird Feeders), and Audubon recommends elevated suet feeders for woodpeckers and other tree-clinging birds (Audubon: 11 Tips for Feeding Backyard Birds).

Keep feeder food supplemental: it does not replace native plants, mature trees, or natural foraging habitat. Audubon also mentions black-oil sunflower seed in guidance about Downy Woodpeckers, but that specific option should not be treated as a universal preference for every woodpecker species (Audubon).

4. Consider a nest box only for a local species

Some woodpeckers excavate cavities in dead or decaying trees, and some may use nest boxes. A box is not a one-size-fits-all purchase: design and placement should match the target species. The National Wildlife Federation advises researching the species’ habitat, preferred nest height, and orientation, then tailoring the box accordingly (NWF: Nesting Box).

Bird Feeder for Outdoors, Squirrel Proof Suet Feeder for Outside Hanging
  • Attract birds and bring nature: Attaching a suet feeder directly to the trunk of a tree birds love is a great way to attract trunk-hugging birds like nuthatches, woodpeckers, and creepers. Birds can perch and eat from all sides. Basket-style feeder can be filled with suet to attract a variety of wild birds
  • With a good view - Because suet-loving birds naturally forage in trees, they will find a suet feeder more quickly and feel more secure visiting if the feeder is hung close to trees. A suet feeder should always be hung where birders can see and enjoy the birds that visit
  • Durability for long lasting: Constructed from powder-coated heavy steel, it is engineered to withstand harsh weather conditions and is rust-resistant for long-term use. Please note, suet is not included with this product
  • Easy use and no need cleaning: This cage feeder features an easy-open lid for convenient refilling and cleaning and holds one suet cake. It is great for filling with suet, seed blocks, fruit or bird nesting material. Simply mount the feeder with the metal hook and watch the birds gather
  • Perfect for holding seed cakes, large suet cakes, nesting material, fruit halves and more
  • First check which woodpecker species occur in your area; a species outside its range will not be attracted by a box.
  • Confirm the box dimensions, entrance, placement height, and direction recommended for that species.
  • If you cannot establish local species and specifications, ask a regional bird authority before buying or installing a box.

5. Maintain feeders and give birds time

Woodpecker visits vary with local species, habitat, season, and the birds’ own behavior. A feeder may be useful, but it does not ensure that birds will find or use your yard. Keep feeding areas in good condition and follow current wildlife or public-health guidance if you find a dead bird near a feeder; disease-response advice can change, so avoid relying on an old sanitation instruction without checking current local guidance.
