These meanings are cultural stories—not universal facts about owls.
Owls are symbols of wisdom in some traditions, omens of death in others, and even companions of prosperity or transformed mythic characters elsewhere. None of these meanings is a universal fact about owls. They are stories, religious symbols, and superstitions shaped by particular communities and historical settings.

The contradiction is part of what makes owl folklore so enduring: the same large eyes, silent flight, nighttime activity, and unusual calls that made owls seem all-seeing and wise in one tradition also made them appear supernatural or threatening in another.
1. Owls are wise because they are Athena’s birds
The belief
The familiar “wise owl” is often connected with Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, warfare, justice, and the arts. In Greek mythology and art, the owl was one of Athena’s principal symbols. The bird also appeared prominently on Athenian coinage, helping establish its association with wisdom, power, civic identity, and divine protection. [CIT-c001] [CIT-c004]
What the tradition means
This does not necessarily mean that ancient Greeks believed every owl possessed superior intelligence in the scientific sense. Rather, the owl became a visual and religious emblem associated with Athena and the qualities attributed to her.

The reality
Owls are highly effective nocturnal predators, but there is no evidence that they are naturally “wiser” than other birds in the human sense. Their forward-facing eyes, serious facial expression, ability to locate prey in darkness, and quiet movements may have made them look watchful or all-knowing. That is a plausible explanation for why people found them easy to associate with wisdom, but it is not a proven single origin for the symbol.
The important distinction is this: the wise owl is a cultural inheritance from Athena, not a biological classification.
2. An owl’s call or visit predicts death
The belief
In some communities, hearing an owl hoot near a house, seeing one land on a roof, or encountering one at night is believed to signal illness, death, or another serious misfortune.

Where the belief appears
Historical and contemporary research documents recurring associations between owls, death, sickness, bad luck, and ill omens in several regions. A study of public perceptions in Africa and Central America found especially strong negative associations in Malawi, where more than 90 percent of respondents connected owls with bad luck, witchcraft, or death. Research on African American folklore in the 1930s American South also examined the belief that a screeching or hooting owl indicated that death was nearby. [CIT-c002] [CIT-c005] [CIT-c006]
These beliefs are not universal. It is inaccurate to say that all Indigenous peoples—or all members of any religion, nation, or ethnic group—believe an owl predicts death. Traditions differ by community, language, species, and circumstance. [CIT-c003]
The reality
An owl’s call does not predict a human death. Owls call to defend territories, attract mates, communicate with young, and respond to other owls. Their nighttime habits and calls, which can sound eerie or surprisingly human-like, help explain why they became omens in some places. They do not establish supernatural or predictive powers.
3. Owls are witches or supernatural beings in disguise
The belief
Some historical folklore portrays witches as capable of transforming into owls or treats owls as messengers and agents of witchcraft.
Where it comes from
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service summarizes traditions in which ancient Romans associated owls with impending death and believed witches could change into owls to travel at night. Broader reviews of owl perceptions also record links between owls, witchcraft, evil, sickness, and misfortune in several regions. [CIT-c003] [CIT-c007]
The reality
This is a folklore motif, not a worldwide belief system and not a description of actual owl behavior. An owl’s ability to fly silently through darkness, hunt at night, and appear suddenly near human settlements may have encouraged supernatural interpretations. That connection is a reasonable cultural interpretation, not proof of one universal historical cause.
It is therefore more accurate to say that owls were linked with witchcraft in some European and regional traditions—not that “the owl is a witch” or that an entire religion or ethnic group shared one belief.
4. The barn owl is a ghost or a “shroud-ripper” that brings death
The belief
Barn owls have attracted particularly intense folklore. Their pale feathers, heart-shaped facial disks, silent flight, and habit of nesting in barns, sheds, churches, and other buildings can give them a ghostlike appearance. In some traditions, they are described as spirits, death birds, or supernatural visitors.

In Brazil, one notable belief says that a barn owl’s call or presence is connected with tearing a dead person’s burial shroud. A 2026 study of American barn-owl perceptions in Brazil reported that 54.7 percent of surveyed participants had heard this “death-shroud tearing” myth, while 79.9 percent believed such myths influence how owls are treated. The researchers connected persistent folklore with possible persecution and argued for environmental education tailored to local communities. [CIT-c008]
The reality
Barn owls do not tear shrouds or bring death. They are predators that help regulate rodent populations, making them potentially valuable around farms and other areas where rodents are a problem. More broadly, owls are important ecosystem predators, especially because many species consume rodents. [CIT-c003]
This example shows why folklore deserves to be discussed respectfully rather than simply mocked. A frightening story can affect whether people tolerate, protect, or kill a real animal.
5. An owl brings wealth and prosperity through Lakshmi
The belief
Not all owl symbolism is negative. In Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religious and artistic traditions, Lakshmi is associated with fortune, wealth, abundance, and prosperity. The British Museum records that Lakshmi is often depicted with an owl and notes that images of the goddess may serve a protective role for household inhabitants. [CIT-c009]
What the tradition means
In this specific religious context, the owl can be part of a positive symbolic world connected with fortune, divine protection, and prosperity. This directly contrasts with traditions that treat an owl as a death omen or a sign of witchcraft.
The qualification
The owl is not the only important symbol in representations of Lakshmi. Lotuses, elephants, gold, and other attributes also carry major religious and artistic meaning. It would be too broad to claim that every Hindu person regards every owl sighting as a promise of wealth. The more precise statement is that Lakshmi is often represented with an owl in particular religious imagery.
6. Blodeuwedd was transformed into an owl in Welsh mythology
The belief
In the fourth branch of the Welsh Mabinogi, Blodeuwedd is created from flowers as a wife for Lleu Llaw Gyffes. She later conspires with Gronw Pebr against Lleu. After the plot is discovered, Blodeuwedd is transformed into an owl and condemned to avoid daylight.

In Ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of a higher wisdom, and it was also a guardian of the Acropolis.
Eryri National Park and Visit Wales both summarize this episode as part of Welsh mythology and folklore. [CIT-c010] [CIT-c011]
What the story means
Within the narrative, becoming an owl is a punishment for Blodeuwedd’s betrayal and involvement in a plot against her husband. It is not evidence that Welsh people universally regarded real owls as evil, nor does the story establish a general Welsh superstition about seeing an owl.
Modern literary and cultural retellings may reinterpret Blodeuwedd as a more sympathetic figure or explore the story’s themes of identity, autonomy, gender, and transformation. Those later interpretations should be distinguished from the medieval mythological source.
Why do owls attract so many superstitions?
Several real owl traits invite symbolic interpretation:
Recommended Free Tools
- Nocturnal activity: Owls are active when most people are asleep, making encounters feel unusual or mysterious.
- Silent flight: Specialized feathers allow many owls to approach prey with remarkably little sound.
- Large forward-facing eyes: Their facial appearance can seem unusually alert, solemn, or human-like.
- Distinctive calls: Hoots, screeches, and other vocalizations may sound ominous to people unfamiliar with them.
- Predatory behavior: Hunting and feeding at night can be interpreted as threatening when viewed through folklore rather than natural history.
- Human-associated nesting sites: Barn owls and other species may live around farms, barns, buildings, and cemeteries, increasing the chance that people connect them with human events.
These traits may help explain why owls became symbols of wisdom, death, witchcraft, protection, or prosperity. But the specific meaning depends on place and tradition. A global systematic review found negative owl perceptions in parts of Argentina, Malawi, Nepal, Tanzania, Northern Arizona, Pakistan, Mexico, India, and Chile, while positive traditions are documented in Greece and Finland and in religious contexts involving Athena and Lakshmi. How to respond when an owl appears near your home
An owl on a roof or near a barn is usually looking for food, shelter, a mate, or a safe place to rest. Its call is communication—not a prediction. Watch from a distance, keep pets away from the bird, and avoid handling an owl unless a qualified wildlife rehabilitator instructs you to do so.

If you are considering a nest box, do not install one simply because an owl visited. Box design, height, entrance size, placement, and habitat requirements vary by species. Nest boxes can substitute for lost natural nest sites, and the World Owl Trust identifies loss of nesting sites as a major problem for barn owls, but poorly placed boxes can be ineffective or unsafe. Follow local wildlife guidance and species-specific instructions. [CIT-c015]
The bottom line
Owls do not cause death, predict the future, transform from witches, tear burial shrouds, or guarantee wealth. Those ideas belong to particular myths and superstitions. In other traditions, owls represent wisdom, protection, prosperity, or divine association. Learning the cultural history can be fascinating, but the bird itself is wildlife: a specialized nocturnal predator whose calls and appearances have natural explanations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does hearing an owl mean someone will die?
No. An owl’s hoot is a form of communication used for purposes such as territory defense, mating, and contact between individuals. Some traditions interpret owl calls as death omens, but there is no evidence that they predict human deaths.
Are owls associated with witches?
No. The belief that owls are witches or witches in disguise appears in some historical and regional folklore, including traditions summarized in connection with ancient Rome. It is not a universal belief or a factual description of owls.
Do owls symbolize wealth?
In some Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religious and artistic contexts, Lakshmi—the goddess associated with fortune and prosperity—is depicted with an owl. That does not mean every owl sighting is universally understood as a promise of wealth.
Are barn owls ghosts or death birds?
Barn owls are harmless to people when left alone and can benefit farms by preying on rodents. Their pale appearance, silent flight, and nighttime activity have contributed to ghost and death-bird folklore, but they do not bring death or tear burial shrouds.
The Bottom Line
Owl symbolism is culturally specific, not a universal property of the bird. An owl’s call or appearance does not predict death, wealth, witchcraft, or any other human event. Respecting the traditions while understanding owl biology is the most accurate—and safest—way to view these remarkable animals.
