Guinness World Records recognized the reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) as the longest verifiably measured wild snake. Who is Ibu Baron?
Ibu Baron is a female reticulated python discovered in the Maros region of South Sulawesi. Reticulated pythons are nonvenomous constrictors and are widely regarded as the world’s longest living snake species.

Most reticulated pythons are considerably shorter. Guinness gives a common length range of roughly 3 to 6 meters (9 feet 10 inches to 19 feet 2 inches), although females generally grow longer and heavier than males. Ibu Baron’s measurement places her well beyond that typical range.
The species has an extensive range across South and Southeast Asia. It can live in rainforest, swamps, river corridors, plantations, agricultural areas and, in some places, urban landscapes. That adaptability helps explain why a giant python can turn up near people—but also why large individuals may face serious conflict when they do.
How Ibu Baron was measured
The team measured Ibu Baron while she was awake, using a surveyor’s tape that followed the natural curves of her body. They did not pull her straight or stretch her from head to tail.

A living giant snake is muscular, flexible and difficult to control safely. Forcing one into a perfectly straight line could injure the animal or the people handling it, while measuring a series of curves introduces its own practical challenges. At least eight people were reportedly needed to help handle or position Ibu Baron safely.
Her weight was taken separately. The python was placed inside a large canvas sack and weighed on scales normally used for rice bags. The result was 96.5 kilograms—heavy enough to show why this was a substantial handling operation rather than a routine wildlife measurement.
Why the record says “verifiably measured”
Stories of snakes longer than 8 meters have circulated for decades. But Guinness has described many of those historical claims as anecdotal or unsupported by first-hand measurement evidence. Ibu Baron’s achievement is therefore best understood as a record of documented, verifiable measurement, not definitive proof that no longer snake has ever lived.

Could Ibu Baron really be longer than 7.22 meters?
Possibly—but the larger number discussed in reporting is not her official length.
Guinness states that anesthesia could allow a snake’s muscles to relax and potentially produce a measurement at least 10% longer. Applied to Ibu Baron’s 7.22-meter measurement, that would be approximately 7.9 meters (26 feet). The estimate is about how much additional length might be revealed by relaxation during a controlled procedure; it is not a second measurement of her body.
Nor should a wild animal be anesthetized merely to pursue a record. Sedation carries risks and should be reserved for safety or a necessary medical procedure. Measuring Ibu Baron awake, along her natural curves, was the more appropriate basis for the public record.
Is Ibu Baron still growing?
She may not have reached her maximum size, but her remaining growth is unknown.
Reticulated pythons exhibit indeterminate growth: unlike humans, they can continue adding body length after sexual maturity. Growth is typically fastest when they are young and slows with age. Research on giant snakes also indicates strong female-biased size differences, meaning females of some species can become substantially larger than males.

That species-level biology does not tell us how many inches—or feet—Ibu Baron has left to grow. Her age, hatch date, reproductive status and a measured growth history have not been established in the available public record. It would therefore be misleading to say that she definitely will reach 26 feet or has a known amount of growth remaining.

There are two separate ideas that should not be confused:
- Biological growth: Ibu Baron may continue growing because reticulated pythons can continue growing throughout life, although more slowly as they age.
- Measurement relaxation: A relaxed body might measure roughly 10% to 15% longer than an awake snake measured in its natural curves. That is not future biological growth.
Why was she not released?
After learning about the discovery, local conservationist Budi Purwanto took custody of Ibu Baron and housed her in a protected enclosure with other rescued snakes.
The decision was based on the risks of returning an unusually large predator to a human-dominated setting. Very large prey animals are scarce near dense settlements, while livestock, pets and people are readily available. A python of Ibu Baron’s size moving toward a village could be killed by frightened residents or targeted for the wildlife trade.

But in this particular case, the available reporting supports the narrower conclusion that Purwanto’s intervention helped prevent Ibu Baron from being killed or disappearing before she could be documented, and that protected care was considered safer than immediate release.
What could a reticulated python this size eat?
Reticulated pythons are constrictors. Their size enables them to tackle substantially larger prey than most snakes, including animals such as wild pigs and deer. But a snake’s potential prey range is not evidence of what one particular animal has actually eaten.
Herpetologist Radu Frentiu told National Geographic that Ibu Baron could potentially swallow at least a calf and possibly an adult cow. That is an expert’s assessment of her capacity, not a documented feeding observation. There is no basis for claiming that Ibu Baron has eaten cattle, people or any other sensational prey unless a specific, reliable observation establishes it.

People should never approach, feed or attempt to handle a giant reticulated python. Even a nonvenomous snake can cause severe injury through constriction, bites, impact from its body or defensive movement.
How does Ibu Baron compare with other giant snakes?
Ibu Baron’s record is specifically about wild-snake length. It should not be confused with either the captive record or the record for heaviest snake.

Reticulated pythons are regulated under CITES Appendix II, which controls international trade in listed species and products. CITES materials document substantial historical trade in reticulated-python skins and discuss the effects of harvesting, distribution and commercial exploitation.
Human conflict is another pressure, particularly when large snakes approach settlements or livestock. The species is widely distributed, but that fact alone does not answer its conservation status everywhere. CITES Appendix II should not be translated into “globally endangered,” and Ibu Baron’s story does not by itself establish a current global threat category.

Her discovery also illustrates why documentation can matter. A giant snake that is not identified, measured and protected may instead be killed, traded or lost from public knowledge. In Ibu Baron’s case, establishing her size created a reason to treat her as a valuable conservation subject rather than simply as a dangerous animal near a village.

She may still grow because reticulated pythons can continue growing after maturity, but her age and future size are not known. Her record is impressive not only because of the number, but because the snake was alive, measured carefully and preserved from the immediate risks of a human-dominated landscape. It is a reminder that the most responsible wildlife story is not always “the biggest animal ever”—it is sometimes the more precise story of what has actually been proven.
