A practical pet-hygiene routine covers preventive veterinary care, teeth, coat, nails, ears, and the supplies your pet uses. The right schedule depends on the animal’s species, health, coat, and handling tolerance, so use your veterinarian’s guidance where needs differ.
1. Keep preventive veterinary care current
Regular veterinary visits help keep vaccines and deworming on track and let you discuss flea and tick prevention. The CDC recommends regular veterinary care and staying current on vaccines, deworming, and flea and tick control. AAHA’s summary of the AAHA/AVMA preventive healthcare guidelines describes year-round parasite control for dogs and cats.

Ask your veterinarian which products and schedule fit your pet’s health and local exposure risks; a product that is appropriate for one animal may not be right for another. See the CDC’s guidance on staying healthy around animals, its pages on dogs and pets and other animals, and AAHA’s preventive-care guideline summary.
2. Make home dental care part of the routine
Use a toothbrush and toothpaste made for pets, following your veterinarian’s advice on technique and what your animal will tolerate. AAHA also discusses dental wipes and products accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC); check the current VOHC list if you want to choose an accepted product.

Home care supports oral hygiene; it does not diagnose or treat dental disease. A veterinarian should assess your pet’s oral health and provide professional care when needed. Read AAHA’s dental guidelines overview, its explanation of professional dental cleaning and therapy, and its advice on home oral hygiene and products.
3. Groom and bathe for your pet
Brush and bathe in ways suited to your pet’s coat, skin, and comfort. There is no single bathing frequency established for every pet. Ask your veterinarian or a professional groomer for help if skin or coat concerns arise, or if grooming at home is difficult to manage safely. AAHA includes regular grooming and bathing among owner considerations in its client education guidance.

4. Keep nails at a comfortable length
Overlong nails can be uncomfortable, but the appropriate length and trimming interval vary. If you are unsure how to trim your pet’s nails, or your pet resists handling, ask a veterinary professional or groomer rather than risk cutting too far. Nail care is also included in AAHA’s client education guidance.

Whether an animal’s ears need cleaning—and which method is suitable—depends on the individual pet. Ask your veterinarian for advice instead of following a fixed schedule or putting a product into the ears without guidance.

6. Clean supplies and handle waste carefully
Use a workable cleaning schedule
Cleaning removes dirt and germs; disinfecting is intended to kill germs on surfaces. The CDC offers these example intervals for pet supplies:
- Food bowls: after each use for wet food; daily for dry food.
- Water bowls: daily.
- Pet beds and blankets: weekly.
- Toys: monthly.
These are examples, not fixed rules for every household. Clean items more often if they look dirty or smell bad, and follow the care directions for the item and the cleaner. See the CDC’s guidance on cleaning and disinfecting pet supplies.

Wash your hands and manage litter safely
Wash your hands after touching or playing with animals, handling pet food or supplies, and cleaning up waste. Cat feces can contain Toxoplasma gondii. The CDC advises pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems to have someone else handle litter if possible. If they must scoop it themselves, they should scoop daily, wear disposable gloves, and wash their hands afterward. Read the CDC’s hygiene practices around animals.

Follow product labels, keep pets away while cleaning, and do not let them use cleaned items until they are fully dry. The CDC warns that phenol-containing disinfectants are very toxic to cats. It also says vinegar has not been sufficiently researched as a cleaner or disinfectant and does not kill all germs. Never mix bleach with other cleaners such as ammonia.
