The six retriever breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) are the Chesapeake Bay, Curly-Coated, Flat-Coated, Golden, Labrador, and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They were developed as athletic working dogs that retrieve game, but they differ in coat, working style, and typical temperament. Compare their needs with your available time for activity, training, and coat care, and remember that breed tendencies do not predict every individual dog.
The six retriever breeds at a glance
The AKC groups these six breeds in its Sporting Group. Retrievers are generally suited to active homes, but their size, coat, and working style vary. The measurements below are included only where the dossier provides current, breed-specific evidence.
| Breed | Verified size information | Coat | Typical working-style tendency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Labrador Retriever | Males: 22.5–24.5 inches; females: 21.5–23.5 inches. The AKC profile gives male weight as 65–80 pounds; no female weight is stated here. | Short, dense coat | Outgoing, adaptable, high-spirited, and eager to please |
| Golden Retriever | Precise size figures are not included here. | Golden coat | Intelligent, capable, and loving |
| Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Precise size figures are not included here. | Wavy, waterproof coat | Loyal, upbeat, affectionate, and tireless |
| Flat-Coated Retriever | Males: 23–24.5 inches; females: 22–23.5 inches; 60–70 pounds; life expectancy 8–10 years. | Flat-lying coat with leg and tail feathering | Responsive, sensible, happy, and outgoing |
| Curly-Coated Retriever | Precise size figures are not included here. | Tight, water-resistant curls | Intelligent and capable; can be independent or aloof with strangers |
| Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever | The smallest of the six. The AKC gave ideal heights of 19 inches for males and 18 inches for females. | Red, water-repellent double coat | Compact, agile, alert, and closely associated with active retrieving work |
Measurements and descriptions above come from AKC breed profiles, its retriever overview, and its 2003 Toller announcement. Ideal or typical measurements are not a prediction for an individual dog. Ask a reputable breeder or rescue about the adult dogs’ size, temperament, and care needs.
What makes a dog a retriever?
Retrievers were developed to locate and return game for hunters, often in demanding conditions. Their working background helps explain their athleticism and interest in retrieving, but a breed label alone does not guarantee field ability or a particular personality. The AKC describes retrievers as smart, biddable, athletic dogs developed to work closely with people.

For a companion home, consider whether you can provide regular activity, training, enrichment, and company. A ball game may suit some dogs, while others may benefit from varied work and activities. Match the individual dog to your routine rather than relying on a breed stereotype.
1. Labrador Retriever
Temperament and working style
The AKC describes Labradors as friendly, outgoing, high-spirited, versatile, gentle, and eager to please. These are breed tendencies, not guarantees. Labs were developed as working retrievers and generally suit people who can include a dog in an active routine and provide consistent training.
Size and coat
The current AKC profile gives male height as 22.5–24.5 inches and female height as 21.5–23.5 inches. It gives male weight as 65–80 pounds; the available dossier does not provide a female weight, so no range is inferred here. The coat is short and dense. Ask about grooming and shedding expectations for the specific dog.
Best fit
A Labrador may suit an active household looking for a versatile, people-oriented dog. Consider another fit if you cannot provide regular activity, training, and companionship. Popularity does not make a breed automatically easy for every owner.
2. Golden Retriever
Temperament and working style
The AKC traces the Golden Retriever to the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s and describes the breed as intelligent, physically capable, and loving. Goldens can be versatile companions and working dogs, but individual activity needs and sociability vary.
Size and coat
The dossier does not provide verified size figures for the Golden Retriever. Its characteristic coat is golden. Ask a breeder or rescue about the coat-care needs and adult size of the dog you are considering.

A Golden may suit an owner seeking an interactive, active companion who can provide training and routine coat care. Do not assume that a friendly reputation means the dog needs little exercise or guidance.
3. Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Temperament and working style
The AKC describes the Chesapeake Bay Retriever as loyal, upbeat, affectionate, and tireless. It is a powerful working dog with a history of water-oriented retrieving. Temperament varies between individual dogs, so meet the dog and ask about its background and behavior.

The Chesapeake has a wavy, waterproof coat, a trait associated with its working role. The dossier does not provide verified size figures for this breed. Waterproof does not mean care-free: ask about routine coat and general care for the specific dog.
Best fit
A Chesapeake may suit an active owner interested in a capable working dog and prepared to provide training, activity, and thoughtful introductions to new situations. Do not assume every Chessie will suit every household.
4. Flat-Coated Retriever
Temperament and working style
The AKC describes the Flat-Coat as responsive, sensible, bright, confident, happy, and outgoing. Its willing-to-please character can make it an engaging partner for an owner who enjoys an active dog. These standard descriptions are not guarantees for an individual.
Size and coat
The current AKC profile gives male height as 23–24.5 inches and female height as 22–23.5 inches. It lists weight as 60–70 pounds and life expectancy as 8–10 years. The flat-lying coat has feathering on the legs and tail; ask about care and shedding for the individual dog.

5. Curly-Coated Retriever
Temperament and working style
The Curly-Coated Retriever is a multipurpose hunting retriever described by the AKC as reliable, robust, and highly intelligent. It may be more independent than some other retrievers and can appear aloof, particularly with strangers, while remaining willing to please. These are tendencies rather than predictions.
Size and coat
The breed’s defining feature is its tight, water-resistant curls. The dossier does not provide verified size figures. Ask an experienced breeder or groomer to explain suitable care for this coat; do not assume that curls mean the dog is non-shedding or allergy-safe.
Best fit
A Curly may suit an owner who enjoys training and activities with an intelligent dog that can work independently. Meet adult dogs and discuss coat care before deciding whether the breed suits your household.
6. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
Temperament and working style
The Toller is compact, agile, alert, and intelligent. It was developed for tolling: playful movement along the shoreline that attracts waterfowl closer before the dog retrieves. Its work-oriented history makes it a better match for owners who want to actively engage with their dog.
Size and coat
The AKC calls the Toller the smallest of its retrievers. Its 2003 announcement gives ideal heights of 19 inches for males and 18 inches for females. The breed has a red, water-repellent double coat. Ask about grooming and shedding for the individual dog.

How to compare the six in daily life
Activity and training
The AKC says retrievers do best in active homes. Consider how much time you can realistically give to exercise, enrichment, training, and companionship. Tollers are particularly associated with high-energy retrieving activity. Do not rely on a universal daily-minute target: needs vary by age, health, and individual dog.
Coat and grooming
| Breed | Coat feature to consider | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Chesapeake Bay Retriever | Wavy, waterproof coat | What routine care does this coat need? |
| Curly-Coated Retriever | Tight, water-resistant curls | Can a breeder or groomer demonstrate suitable care? |
| Flat-Coated Retriever | Flat-lying coat with feathering | How much coat care and shedding should I expect? |
| Golden Retriever | Golden coat | What coat care is needed for this dog? |
| Labrador Retriever | Short, dense coat | What grooming and shedding should I expect? |
| Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever | Red, water-repellent double coat | What routine care does this coat need? |
Every breed needs routine care, including nail trimming. Coat type alone does not establish that a dog is low-shedding or suitable for someone with allergies. If grooming or allergies are a concern, spend time with adult dogs of the breed and ask about their care.
Household fit
Think about your schedule, experience, activity level, grooming tolerance, and the dog’s living arrangements. Meet individual dogs where possible. Ask a reputable breeder or rescue about behavior, exercise, and care needs instead of treating breed descriptions as guarantees.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing a breeder or rescue
Ask a reputable breeder about the parents, their health history, the puppies’ care, and what support is available after placement. Health-testing recommendations differ by breed, and the evidence summarized for this article does not establish a complete current list of recommended tests for all six. Ask for breed-specific recommendations and discuss health questions with a veterinarian. Adoption from a rescue is another option; ask what is known about the individual dog’s health, behavior, and history.
- Ask about the adult dogs’ temperament, activity, and health history.
- Ask which breed-specific health evaluations are recommended and request available records.
- Ask how puppies or dogs are cared for and introduced to everyday experiences.
- Review the written contract, return policy, and any post-placement support.
- Meet the dog when possible and consider whether its needs fit your actual routine.
