Keep every interaction calm, brief and actively supervised—and never leave a baby alone with a dog, even a familiar family pet. The adult is responsible for setting the pace, giving the dog room to retreat and separating them whenever close attention is not possible. A baby cannot reliably understand or follow safety rules around animals.
How to introduce a baby and dog calmly
There is no universal introduction routine that guarantees safety. Keep first encounters low-key and short, and let the dog choose whether to approach. Do not push the baby’s face toward the dog or hold the baby in a position that forces contact. If either seems uncomfortable, calmly end the interaction and create distance.
If the baby is frightened, do not require contact or encourage the baby to approach as a way to overcome fear. Allow space and gradual familiarity, with an adult controlling the situation.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends active supervision and carefully managed introductions. AVMA president Dr. Michael Q. Bailey said in an April 9, 2026 release: “Dogs enrich our lives in countless ways, especially for children, but it’s important to remember that any dog can bite, and kids can be particularly vulnerable.”

Supervise closely and separate when you cannot
Stay close and attentive whenever the baby and dog are together. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says young children should always be supervised around dogs and should not disturb a dog that is eating, sleeping or caring for puppies. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) likewise advises that small children and dogs should never be left alone together. Familiarity does not remove the need for supervision: familiar dogs are involved in many bites affecting young children.
When you cannot give the interaction your full attention, put the baby and dog in separate rooms or use a barrier to control access. A gate can help manage rooms, but it does not make unsupervised contact safe. Give the dog a quiet, protected resting place that the baby cannot enter.

Keep babies away from dog food, toys and resting places
Prevent the baby from crowding, grabbing, hugging or climbing on the dog. Keep them apart when the dog is eating or sleeping, and do not let the baby approach the dog’s food, treats, toys or bed. Give puppies the same protected space. A dog may bite when scared, nervous, unwell or guarding a resource, according to the CDC.
Notice possible stress signals and create space
Stop contact and increase distance if the dog turns away, stiffens, growls or tries to move out of reach. The AVMA also lists yawning, ears held back and raising a paw as possible signs of worry. These signals are not a reliable way to diagnose a dog’s intent: individual dogs communicate differently, and a single cue cannot establish whether a dog is comfortable. Treat a possible signal as a reason to give the dog space, not to test the interaction. A wagging tail alone does not show that the dog is at ease.

Choose a household setup that makes safe separation practical
Before bringing the baby and dog into the same space, check whether your arrangement lets you remain attentive and control access to places the dog needs. A separate room or pet gate may help, depending on your home’s layout.
- Can an attentive adult stay close throughout any interaction?
- Does the dog have a quiet retreat the baby cannot reach?
- Can you block the baby’s access to the dog’s food and sleeping area?
- Can you separate them easily when you need to focus elsewhere?
Get veterinary or professional help when needed
Keep up with routine veterinary care and talk with your veterinarian about health or behavior concerns. A dog that seems unwell, fearful or increasingly uneasy around the baby may need an individualized plan. If fear or aggression is significant, ask your veterinarian about appropriate professional support. The AVMA recommends socialization and training; neither should be treated as a guarantee that a dog will never bite.

If you are thinking about getting a dog
The AAP says it may be safest to wait until a child is older than four before adopting a dog, while taking the child’s maturity and the family’s circumstances into account. This is not an absolute rule for every household. Any decision should consider whether adults can consistently supervise and manage the baby’s access to the dog.
