Most healthy adult cats rarely need a bath. When yours does need help, choose a shampoo made for cats and match it to the reason for bathing: routine cleaning, a waterless touch-up, oily coat, shedding, or a skin condition diagnosed by a veterinarian. The seven products below are Cats.com’s picks in distinct categories, not a clinical ranking or proof that any shampoo treats disease. VCA’s grooming guidance recommends asking a veterinarian which shampoo is appropriate for your cat.

Do cats really need baths?

Usually not. VCA says most healthy adult cats groom themselves and rarely require a bath. Whether a cat needs help depends on factors such as age, lifestyle, and health; some cats cannot groom effectively, and some skin conditions call for specific care. If your cat needs frequent bathing or has persistent itching, irritation, or another skin concern, talk with a veterinarian rather than treating it as an ordinary grooming problem.

Use a shampoo formulated for cats. VCA cautions that human shampoo, including baby shampoo, is too harsh for cats. Follow the product’s current label, rinse shampoo thoroughly when the directions call for rinsing, and ask your veterinarian which formula is suitable for your cat.

How to choose a cat shampoo

  • Start with the need. A waterless product for occasional spot cleaning is not interchangeable with a rinse-off shampoo for a full bath, or with a medicated product selected for a diagnosed condition.
  • Check the application and directions. Confirm whether the product is rinse-off, waterless, or foaming, and follow its label for use, contact time, and rinsing.
  • Confirm cat suitability. Read the current label for species and age restrictions. Product formulations and directions can change.
  • Get veterinary guidance when the issue is medical. A shampoo marketed for grooming is not automatically a treatment for itching, infection, allergies, or parasites. Medicated shampoo should be selected and used under veterinary direction.

Seven cat shampoos by intended use

Cats.com’s January 22, 2026 roundup groups these products by intended use. The categories below help explain what each is meant to address; they should not be read as a single clinical ranking. Check current product labels before use.

#1 Best Overall
Burts Bees for Pets Hypoallergenic Cat Shampoo, Unscented, 10 Fl Oz
  • HYPOALLERGENIC FORMULA FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Gentle shampoo made without harsh detergents, parabens, sulfates, or synthetic fragrances, reducing the risk of skin reactions during bathing for cats with dry, flaky, or reactive skin.
  • SHEA BUTTER AND HONEY CONDITIONING: Shea butter and honey help moisturize and soften fur during the bath, supporting a coat that feels smoother and less dry after rinsing compared to basic cleansing-only formulas.
  • PH BALANCED FOR FELINE SKIN: Formulated specifically for cats with a pH level suited to feline skin, which differs from human skin pH; using a cat-specific formula reduces the risk of skin barrier disruption during bathing.
  • FRAGRANCE-FREE FOR CAT COMFORT: Contains no added fragrance, which helps reduce stress during bathing for cats sensitive to strong scents, and avoids exposing felines to artificial perfumes they may find irritating.
  • GENTLE LATHER FOR MANAGEABLE BATHING: Light lather rinses clean without heavy residue, making it easier to fully remove shampoo from the coat during the rinse stage, which is often the most challenging part of bathing a cat.

When a medicated shampoo is appropriate

Medicated shampoo is for a specific veterinary purpose, not simply a stronger option for routine grooming. VCA identifies MiconaHex+Triz’s miconazole, chlorhexidine, and tris-EDTA combination as an antifungal and antimicrobial cleansing agent used for surface skin infections in cats and dogs. That description does not mean it is appropriate for every rash or that it cures every infection. A veterinarian should determine whether it fits the condition and explain how to use it. See VCA’s medication guidance.

Rank #2
Burts Bees for Pets Tearless Kitten Shampoo with Buttermilk, 10 Fl Oz
  • TEARLESS FORMULA SAFE FOR KITTENS: Mild surfactant formula produces a low-irritation lather that will not sting if it makes contact with the eyes, making it safer for bathing young kittens who may be less cooperative.
  • BUTTERMILK GENTLY CLEANSES AND SOOTHES: Naturally derived buttermilk helps cleanse the coat without stripping natural oils, providing a gentle wash that leaves fur soft and supports skin comfort in kittens with sensitive skin.
  • HONEY CONDITIONS AND SUPPORTS PH BALANCE: Honey naturally conditions the coat, helps regulate the pH balance appropriate for feline skin, and adds a light sheen without requiring a separate post-bath conditioning step.
  • 99% NATURAL ORIGIN FORMULA: Made with 99%+ naturally derived ingredients and formulated without chemical detergents, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, or colorants, for a cleaner kitten grooming option.
  • PH BALANCED FOR FELINE SKIN: Formulated specifically for cats and kittens with a pH appropriate for feline skin rather than human skin, helping protect the skin barrier during bathing and avoid post-bath dryness or irritation.

For medicated bathing, follow the product label and the veterinarian’s instructions, including any specified contact time before rinsing. Do not use a routine grooming shampoo to postpone veterinary care for persistent symptoms.

Bathing safely

  1. Confirm that a bath is needed. If bathing is frequent, or the reason is a skin problem, consult your veterinarian first.
  2. Choose a cat-formulated product for the right use. Check the label for species, age, application method, and directions.
  3. Apply and rinse as directed. For rinse-off products, rinse thoroughly; for medicated products, follow any veterinarian-specified contact time before rinsing.
  4. Stop and seek advice if the problem persists. Shampoo choice alone cannot identify the cause of ongoing skin symptoms.
