Veterinary clinics should choose safety signs and tags based on the hazards in their own workplace and the rules that apply to those hazards. In the United States, OSHA’s general sign-and-tag standard sets broad principles, while chemical and radiation rules add requirements in specific situations. A generic sign kit is not, by itself, a compliance plan.
Start with the hazards in your clinic
Signage is one part of communicating workplace hazards; it does not replace safer procedures, equipment, training, or other controls. The right signs depend on the work performed, the materials and equipment used, and who may be exposed. CDC/NIOSH identifies veterinary and animal-care hazards that include chemical exposure, ionizing radiation, zoonoses, sharps injuries, allergens, noise, and outdoor hazards. Not every practice encounters every hazard.
Examples of chemical hazards include disinfectants, hazardous drugs, latex, pesticides, and waste anesthetic gases. Radiation exposure may be relevant where staff use fixed or portable x-ray equipment or fluoroscopy, or care for patients receiving certain radioactive materials. These are prompts for a clinic-specific hazard assessment, not a universal list of signs.
CDC/NIOSH reports that approximately 60% of more than 1,400 human pathogens are zoonotic and that about 75% of emerging pathogens are zoonotic. These broad figures, reported in 2023, are not estimates of veterinary-worker illness or the risk at any individual clinic. CDC/NIOSH: Veterinary Safety and Health.

- X-RAY RADIATION DANGER SIGN – Clearly communicates “X-Ray Radiation / Do Not Enter / When In Use” to restrict entry during active imaging and support controlled-area safety.
- PREVENTS UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY & EXPOSURE – Helps reduce preventable walk-ins that can create unnecessary radiation exposure risk for staff, patients, contractors, and visitors.
- IDEAL FOR MEDICAL + INDUSTRIAL SETTINGS – Designed for X-ray rooms, imaging suites, dental X-ray areas, veterinary clinics, chiropractic imaging, NDT/radiography work zones, and inspection rooms.
- 8x12 RUST-RESISTANT ALUMINUM – Manufactured from rust-resistant aluminum for long-term durability in high-traffic facilities, corridors, doors, and controlled access points
- FAST-READ, HIGH-CONTRAST LAYOUT – Large block lettering is easy to recognize quickly, helping teams enforce restricted access during scans and active imaging operations.
What OSHA’s general sign and tag categories mean
OSHA’s accident-prevention sign and tag standard, 29 CFR 1910.145, covers signs used to identify specific hazards where failure to identify them could result in injury, illness, or property damage. It distinguishes signs by the seriousness and kind of warning:
- Danger: identifies an immediate danger.
- Caution: warns of a potential hazard or an unsafe practice.
- Safety instruction: communicates general safety instructions or measures.
Tags communicate a particular hazard or instruction, often at or on equipment. OSHA requires a signal word and a major message that identifies the specific hazard or instruction. As the standard puts it, “The major message shall indicate the specific hazardous condition or the instruction to be communicated to the employee.” A vague tag may not give an exposed employee enough information to act safely.

- construction signs: use these posted signs in construction zones to promote following safe practices and protocols. the metal tin sign can be posted on the street or road at the entrance of the construction area.
- Use wording, pictographs, or both that exposed employees can understand; employees must also be told what tags mean and what precautions to take.
- The signal word must be readable from at least five feet away, or farther when the hazard warrants it.
- Attach tags securely and as close as safely possible to the hazard.
- Choose the signal word appropriate to the level of hazard; danger and caution tags have distinct criteria, and the standard allows warning tags for an intermediate level.
OSHA also specifies biological-hazard tags for actual or potential biological hazards on covered equipment, containers, rooms, and experimental animals. Apply the standard to the situation at hand rather than assuming every biological-risk area calls for the same tag.
When chemical labels and warnings apply
OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard applies to hazardous chemicals known to be present in the workplace when employees may be exposed during normal use or a foreseeable emergency. It calls for a hazard communication program that uses labels and other warnings, safety data sheets, and information and training. The required label elements for covered containers include a product identifier, signal word, hazard statements, pictograms, precautionary statements, and responsible-party contact information, subject to the standard’s detailed provisions and exceptions. A room sign is not a substitute for required container labels, safety data sheets, or employee training. Nor should a clinic assume every veterinary drug is covered in exactly the same way. In a 1993 interpretation addressing veterinary practices, OSHA described exceptions for drugs packaged for retail sale and intended for employee personal consumption, and for drugs in solid final form intended for direct administration. The interpretation says crushing a pill or tablet to facilitate administration brings it within the standard as described in that letter. It also says OSHA accepts FDA labeling for drugs and EPA labeling for pesticides to avoid duplication. The letter is older guidance, not a replacement for the current standard; OSHA notes that interpretation letters do not create additional employer obligations and enforcement guidance can change. OSHA interpretation: Hazard Communication Standard in veterinary practices, May 11, 1993.
When radiation signs are required
Radiation postings depend on defined conditions, not simply on whether a clinic has an x-ray room. OSHA’s radiation-control requirements prescribe conspicuous posting for defined radiation areas and specify wording for radiation areas, high-radiation areas, and airborne-radioactivity areas. Separate radioactive-material postings apply to specified rooms or areas when quantities exceed defined thresholds. Those triggers and labels are technical, so do not assume every x-ray room has identical posting requirements. Check the applicable rule, state requirements, and the practice’s radiation-safety procedures. OSHA: Ionizing Radiation, 29 CFR 1910.1096.

How to plan and maintain clinic signage
- Identify the hazards and who may encounter them. Consider routine tasks, foreseeable emergencies, work areas, equipment, and materials. Include employees who may be exposed in the assessment.
- Match each warning to its purpose. Decide whether the situation calls for a general danger, caution, or safety-instruction sign; a specific tag; chemical labeling and warnings; or a radiation posting under the relevant rule.
- Write a clear, hazard-specific message. Use terms and pictographs employees understand, and make the action or precaution clear where the sign or tag is intended to instruct.
- Place it where it can do its job. Make signs visible from the approach employees use. Put tags close to the hazard and attach them securely; follow any more specific placement or wording rule that applies.
- Review signs when work changes. Reevaluate hazards periodically and after changes to processes, materials, or equipment. AAHA recommends an annual hazard review and updating signage to reflect current hazards.
- Check the rules that apply to your location. Confirm federal OSHA requirements alongside the state plan, radiation-safety program, and other relevant local or jurisdictional requirements.
Federal OSHA is not the only consideration for every clinic. CDC/NIOSH notes that state plans may set standards at least as effective as federal requirements and may cover additional hazards. Its veterinary-workplace publication focuses on the United States and notes that requirements vary by country, region, or state. CDC/NIOSH: Veterinary Safety and Health.
Required workplace poster: a separate reminder
Safety hazard signs are distinct from the workplace “Job Safety and Health: It’s the Law” poster. In an AAHA article published January 21, 2026, Jessica Molina, ARM, PHR, CVPM, senior risk consultant with HUB International, reported that 12 of 61 veterinary establishments assessed by OSHA or a state-equivalent agency in 2024 received citations for failing to display the required poster; reported penalties ranged from $150 to $450. That count describes the assessed establishments in the report, not the prevalence of violations across all veterinary workplaces. Molina said, “The focus for 2026 should be on maintaining compliance with existing requirements.” AAHA: 2026 signage requirements.
