For broadleaf weeds in an established lawn, Fiesta Turf Weed Killer is the most targeted choice among these options. For weeds in patios, gravel, mulch, or other places where all contacted plants can be killed, choose a non-selective spot treatment suited to that site. No weed killer is harmless to pets; follow the product label and keep animals away during application.
Wet spray, concentrated product, treated weeds, and contaminated grass clippings can all pose problems if a dog or cat licks, eats, or walks through them. Pet Poison Helpline says herbicide exposure commonly causes gastrointestinal irritation, while the seriousness depends on the product, dose, and route of exposure.
The safest choice depends first on where the weeds are growing. A selective lawn herbicide may control dandelions without killing labeled turf, while most products for patios, gravel, mulch, and fence lines are non-selective and will damage any plant they contact. Keep pets away during application and follow the current label’s re-entry instructions exactly.

1. Fiesta Turf Weed Killer: best for broadleaf weeds in lawns
Fiesta is the strongest fit when the problem is dandelions, clover, and similar broadleaf weeds growing in an established lawn. Its active ingredient is chelated iron, or FeHEDTA, and it is designed to target broadleaf weeds while leaving labeled turf grasses.
This is a selective lawn product—not a general weed-and-grass killer. It will not solve every weed problem, and the permitted turf types, application rate, temperature restrictions, and other directions depend on the current label. The manufacturer says people and pets may re-enter after the spray has dried.
Check the label on the product you purchase and use the one registered for your state. A current Washington State pesticide-label listing includes a 2026 Fiesta label, but that does not make every older online instruction current everywhere.
2. Sunday Weed Warrior: best ready-to-use spot spray
Sunday Weed Warrior is a ready-to-use, non-selective contact herbicide containing herbicidal soap. It is suited to isolated weeds in patio cracks, gravel, mulch beds, and other places where a small amount of overspray will not land on plants you want to keep.
The manufacturer says people and pets can return after the spray has dried and reports visible results in as little as 20 minutes. Older or established weeds may need a second treatment two to three weeks later.
The key limitation is its lack of selectivity. A stream that lands on grass, flowers, shrubs, or vegetable plants can injure or kill them. Use the smallest effective spray pattern rather than misting across a bed, and keep pets from chewing the treated weeds afterward.
3. Avenger Weed Killer: best citrus-oil option
Avenger is a non-selective, post-emergence herbicide containing 17.5% d-limonene, an ingredient derived from citrus oil. It makes sense for driveways, sidewalks, ornamental borders, planting beds, and other areas where all contacted vegetation can be removed.

- GREAT FOR AROUND YOUR HOME - Ideal for use on driveways, sidewalks, patios, walkways, rock beds, mulch beds, landscape beds, around trees, fence lines and other areas where weeds and unwanted grass grow.
- A PURCHASE WITH PURPOSE - We're passionate pet lovers, and every purchase helps make a difference. A portion of every sale is donated to animal shelters nationwide, helping pets find safe, loving homes.
The manufacturer says children and pets may return once the product has dried. That does not mean the wet spray is safe to lick or that treated vegetation is suitable for grazing.
Do not equate “citrus-based” or “organic” with non-irritating. Avenger’s own safety information describes d-limonene as a powerful degreasing solvent and includes skin and first-aid precautions. EPA’s product record lists Avenger Weed Killer as a registered, not restricted-use product, with an accepted label dated January 8, 2025. Always use the current label supplied with the product.
4. Earth’s Ally Weed & Grass Killer: best salt-based option
Earth’s Ally is a ready-to-use, non-selective formula containing 10% sodium chloride. The manufacturer lists water, vinegar, and soap as the other ingredients. It is intended for weeds in mulch, gravel, patios, pavers, planting beds, edging, and fence lines—not for a lawn you want to preserve.
For application, shake the container, spray dry weeds, and saturate the leaves and base. Avoid rain and wet weeds. The manufacturer markets it as safe for people and pets when used as directed, but the salt creates an important yard-management risk: overspray and repeated applications can injure desirable plants and contribute to salt buildup in soil or runoff.
Keep the spray tightly on the target weed. Do not use this type of product as a blanket treatment in a dog’s play lawn or near plants your pet may eat.

Ortho GroundClear Weed & Grass Killer is a non-selective product for patios, driveways, paths, landscape edges, and other areas where vegetation is not wanted. Ortho markets this product as OMRI Listed, and its product information says people and pets may re-enter after the treated area has dried.
Read the full product name before buying. Ortho also sells GroundClear Year Long Vegetation Killer and other GroundClear products. The year-long product is designed to kill and prevent vegetation for up to one year; it is not an appropriate choice for a lawn or planting bed you intend to keep growing.

6. Green Gobbler Total Control: best salt-and-vinegar formula
Green Gobbler Total Control is a non-selective herbicide based on salt, vinegar, and water. It is marketed for driveways, sidewalks, pavers, mulch beds, flower beds, fence lines, and similar locations where desirable vegetation should not be sprayed.

It also markets the formula as safe for people and pets. Treat that as a use-direction claim, not as evidence that a wet application is harmless if swallowed.
Keep pets inside or in an untreated section of the yard while spraying. Wait for the treated area to dry, and block access to weeds that have been sprayed so a dog cannot graze on them.
7. Scythe Herbicide: best professional-strength fatty-acid option
Scythe contains 57% nonanoic acid, also called pelargonic acid, and works as a non-selective contact herbicide. It is aimed more at larger properties, commercial landscaping, greenhouse work, and agricultural or non-crop applications than at routine household spot treatment.
The EPA product record lists agricultural and non-crop sites among its labeled uses. Before using it around a home, verify that the label on your container specifically permits the intended residential site and follow all personal-protection, application, and re-entry instructions.

How to use weed killer around dogs and cats
- Move pets indoors first. Close pet doors and keep animals away from the treatment area before mixing or spraying.
- Read the complete label. Check the product name, active ingredient, approved site, protective equipment, weather restrictions, and re-entry instructions. The EPA label—not a retailer’s summary or a social-media recommendation—controls how the product may be used.
- Choose the right spray pattern. Use a shielded, directed stream or spot treatment near lawns, gardens, ponds, and pet areas. Avoid fine misting, windy conditions, rain, and situations that can cause runoff.
- Wait for the stated re-entry time. If the label says pets may return after drying, wait until every sprayed surface is completely dry. If it specifies a longer interval, use the longer interval.
- Prevent grazing and licking. Drying does not make treated weeds edible. Keep pets from chewing sprayed vegetation, eating grass clippings from treated lawns, or licking residue from paws.
- Store the product securely. Keep concentrates in their original containers, with the label intact, in a locked location inaccessible to pets and children.
- Wash up after application. Clean hands, footwear, tools, and any protective equipment according to the label before handling pets or their food.
Claims about “pet-safe” weed killers that need caution
- “Organic means harmless.” Not true. Avenger’s d-limonene comes from citrus oil, but the manufacturer describes it as a strong degreasing solvent. Vinegar- and fatty-acid-based products can also irritate skin, eyes, and the gastrointestinal tract.
- “Every weed killer is safe after 48 to 72 hours.” There is no universal waiting period. Several products above allow re-entry after drying, but other labels can impose different restrictions.
- “Salt-and-vinegar sprays are safe for lawns.” Usually not. They are generally non-selective, can injure grass and desirable plants, and repeated salt applications can damage soil or contribute to runoff.
- “Any GroundClear product will do the same thing.” No. GroundClear Weed & Grass Killer and GroundClear Year Long Vegetation Killer have different purposes. The year-long product is intended to prevent vegetation for up to a year.
- “Older products found in search results are current recommendations.” Not necessarily. Bonide lists BurnOut FII as discontinued, and Iron-X’s California registration is listed as inactive effective December 31, 2025. Verify current availability and registration before buying a product mentioned on an old page.
What to do if your pet is exposed
If a pet walks through wet spray, licks treated fur or paws, or may have swallowed the product, remove the animal from the area and contact a veterinarian promptly. Have the product container or a clear photo of its label available. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to do so.
Pet Poison Helpline lists (855) 764-7661. Seek urgent veterinary care for repeated vomiting, weakness, breathing difficulty, tremors, seizures, collapse, or any rapidly worsening signs.
FAQ
What is the safest weed killer for a lawn with pets?
For broadleaf weeds in established turf, Fiesta Turf Weed Killer is the best fit among these options because it is a selective lawn herbicide based on chelated iron. It is not a general grass killer, and you must confirm that the turf type and application directions on the current label match your lawn. Keep pets away until the label permits re-entry.
How long should pets stay away after weed killer is applied?
Follow the product’s current label. Several products in this guide state that people and pets may return once the spray has dried, but that is not a universal rule. A longer label interval takes precedence. Pets should also be prevented from eating treated weeds or grass clippings after re-entry.
Are vinegar, salt, and citrus weed killers safe for dogs and cats?
They can be used around pets only according to the label, with animals kept away during application and while the spray is wet. They are not harmless: salt and vinegar products can injure desirable plants and soil, while d-limonene and other formulas can irritate skin, eyes, or the digestive tract if contacted or swallowed.
Can I use a non-selective weed killer near my dog’s play area?
Avoid treating the play area itself. Non-selective products can kill or injure grass and every other plant they contact. If treating a nearby crack, path, or border, use a directed spot spray, prevent drift and runoff, keep the dog away until the label permits re-entry, and block access to treated weeds.
The Bottom Line
For broadleaf weeds in a lawn, Fiesta Turf Weed Killer is the most targeted choice. For isolated weeds outside the lawn, Sunday Weed Warrior is a practical ready-to-use option. Avenger, Earth’s Ally, Ortho GroundClear Weed & Grass Killer, and Green Gobbler are better reserved for hardscapes, mulch, gravel, and other areas where all contacted vegetation can be sacrificed. Scythe is a professional-strength choice that requires especially careful label checking.
