Rajab Ali Butt was convicted after pleading guilty to possessing a lion cub without a proper licence or permit, and was ordered to complete one year of community service through monthly animal-rights vlogs. The sentence period ran from February 2025 through January 2026; the available reports do not confirm whether he completed every vlog or whether a court later recorded compliance.
Why Rajab Butt was convicted
A wildlife officer filed the complaint after a video showed Butt receiving a lion cub as a wedding gift, according to The Express Tribune’s 24 January 2025 report. Dawn reported that Butt pleaded guilty to possessing the cub without a proper licence or permit. The magistrate convicted him under section 21 of the Punjab Wildlife (Protection, Preservation, Conservation and Management) Act 1974.
Dawn reported that the magistrate cited section 21 as carrying up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of Rs10,000 to Rs15,000, or both. Those figures are the penalty described in the case coverage; they are not an independent verification of the current statutory text.
What the community-service sentence required
Magistrate Hamidul Rehman Nasir ordered Butt to make or record a five-minute vlog with dedicated content about animal rights during the first week of each month for one year, from February 2025 through January 2026. Dawn reported that a probation officer supervised the service. The Express Tribune also reported that the Wildlife Department was to provide animal-protection materials and that Butt had to attend if summoned by the probation officer.

Dawn reproduced this wording from the magistrate’s order: “He will make/record a video in the form of vlog with dedicated content on the animal’s right for a full five minutes in the first week of every month for a full one year starting from February 2025 to January 2026.” Dawn also quoted the magistrate as explaining the decision: “The convict admitted his guilt in a steadfast manner, and he evidently demonstrated remorse over his action as he voluntarily pleaded that he be given a chance to do community service as a corrective measure.” These are quotations Dawn attributed to the order; the underlying order is not independently reviewed here.
Where the lion cub was taken
Dawn described the cub’s transfer to Lahore Wildlife Safari Zoo as an interim arrangement. The Express Tribune later reported that the court ordered the cub to permanently belong to the Punjab Wildlife Department and be housed at Lahore Safari Zoo. It said the zoo administration named the cub Bhatti. These accounts distinguish the initial handover from the later-reported final disposition; neither establishes the cub’s current location or welfare status.

What is known about compliance
The ordered service ended in January 2026. The reports cited here do not establish whether Butt submitted every monthly vlog, completed all other probation requirements, or was subsequently found compliant by a court. The sentence itself should not be treated as proof that the service was completed.
