For most Litter-Robot owners, the safest starting point is a standard-weight, clumping clay litter. Whisker’s compatibility guide names seven options that work with the sifting system, but it does not establish a tested “best overall” litter. The right choice depends first on whether litter clumps and sifts properly; material, particle size, color, and your Litter-Robot model can matter too.
What kind of litter works in a Litter-Robot?
The Litter-Robot separates clumps from clean litter, so it needs litter that forms firm clumps. Whisker recommends high-quality, standard-weight clumping clay litter as the default. Its compatibility guide also lists some alternatives, but those should not be taken as proof that every litter made from the same material will work equally well.
Whisker says small silica beads or crystals can work if they pass through the screen. However, translucent or white litter may affect litter-level and Drawer Full Indicator readings on Litter-Robot 4, Litter-Robot 5/Pro, and EVO. For Litter-Robot 3, Whisker likewise allows beads or crystals small enough to pass through the screen, while noting that the globe may need more frequent changing. PrettyLitter’s manufacturer help page warns that its original non-clumping, light-colored silica crystals may affect Litter-Robot 4 sensors and performance.

These are options named in Whisker’s compatibility guide. The categories below distinguish the manufacturer’s strongest endorsement from other listed choices; they are not performance rankings based on independent testing.

Strongest manufacturer endorsement
- GreatLitter: Whisker calls it officially recommended and designed for Litter-Robot. That is the clearest endorsement in this list, not independent proof that it outperforms the others.
Formulated or designed for automatic litter boxes
- Tidy Cats Designed for Litter-Robot: Whisker says it is specially formulated for the Litter-Robot cycle. The guide notes that its fragrance is motion-activated, which may matter if you or your cat prefer unscented litter.
- BoxiePro Bot: Whisker lists this clumping litter as designed for automatic litter boxes. The guide does not provide comparative test results.
Other clay-based options
- Fresh Step: Whisker identifies its clay-based litter as workable and advises filling to the globe line. The guide does not specify a Fresh Step variant as the best choice.
- Dr. Elsey: Whisker identifies its clay-based litter as workable and advises filling to the globe line. It does not compare variants for dust, tracking, or odor.
- Scoop Away: Whisker identifies its clay-based litter as workable and advises filling to the globe line. The guide does not establish a preferred variant.
Qualified alternative to the clay default
- Sustainably Yours: Whisker describes it as fast-clumping and suggests the large-grain version for less tracking. Treat that as guidance for the named product and version, not a general claim about all non-clay litters.
Litters to avoid or assess cautiously
Whisker says not to use strictly absorbent, non-clumping, loose-clumping, newspaper-based, or wood-based pellet litters. These do not meet the sifting system’s stated requirements. Its examples of unsuitable pellet products include Feline Pine, Okocat, Catit Pea Husk, and Tidy Cats Breeze.
- Non-clumping litter: It absorbs rather than forming the clumps the machine separates.
- Loose-clumping litter: Weak clumps may not sift as intended.
- Wood-based pellets: Whisker says pellets such as the named examples will not sift properly.
- Crystal litter: Not an automatic yes or no. Small particles may pass through the screen, but light-colored or translucent products can affect sensors on newer models. Check the specific product and model guidance.
Fill the globe correctly
For Litter-Robot 3, Whisker’s support instructions say to spread litter to the raised fill line. The stated amount is approximately 8–10 pounds (about 4 kg) by weight or 1 gallon (about 4 L) by volume. Whisker warns against overfilling. These quantities apply to Litter-Robot 3; they should not be assumed to be the fill amount for every model. Lightweight corn or wheat litter may need more weight to activate the cat sensor, according to the same LR3 instructions.

Switch litter without changing too much at once
Whisker advises Litter-Robot 3 owners to keep using the cat’s existing brand at first if it is clumping. Introducing a new litter at the same time as a new box may add to a cat’s anxiety. If the current litter is non-clumping, a transition to clumping litter is needed to use the sifting system as intended.
