Arizona’s skies and desert neighborhoods host at least seven memorable hawks: Red-tailed, Harris’s, Cooper’s, Sharp-shinned, Zone-tailed, Common Black and Ferruginous Hawks. This is a practical identification set, not an official statewide checklist. Arizona Game and Fish Department materials group raptors by body form and behavior, while a broader Arizona guide names 15 hawk species and discusses Osprey, which is not a true hawk.

The fastest way to narrow an identification is to study silhouette and behavior before color. Short, rounded wings and a long tail suggest an accipiter such as Cooper’s or Sharp-shinned Hawk. Broad wings and a relatively short tail point toward a buteo such as a Red-tailed, Harris’s, Zone-tailed, Common Black or Ferruginous Hawk.

What “seven types of hawks” means in Arizona

There is no Arizona Game and Fish Department declaration that exactly seven hawk species occur in the state. The agency’s Living with Raptors information and its Arizona Raptors: Wild Kids Student Guide organize hawks by form, flight and behavior rather than publishing a definitive seven-species list. A separate Arizona bird guide presents a longer list of 15 hawks and also covers Osprey; Osprey is a raptor but not a true hawk.

The seven below are therefore a useful, reader-focused selection. They include the hawks most relevant to urban sightings, woodland pursuits, desert waterways, soaring identification and open-country field marks. Other hawks and raptors can occur in Arizona, so an unfamiliar bird should not be forced into one of these seven categories.

Start with shape and behavior, not color

Color can change with age, lighting, wear and individual variation. Arizona Game and Fish’s educational material describes buteos as “medium to large size soaring hawks” with “broad wings and a short tail.” Accipiters, by contrast, have shorter, rounded wings and a long tail suited to fast turns through vegetation.

What you notice Likely group What it suggests
Short, rounded wings; long tail; rapid turns Accipiter Cooper’s Hawk or Sharp-shinned Hawk
Broad wings; short tail; circling or gliding Buteo Red-tailed, Harris’s, Zone-tailed, Common Black or Ferruginous Hawk
Bird threading through trees after small birds Accipiter Cooper’s or Sharp-shinned Hawk
Bird soaring over canyons, desert or open country Usually a buteo Use tail, underside, rump and habitat clues together

Habitat is a second filter. Urban yards and parks can produce Red-tailed, Harris’s and Cooper’s Hawks. Woodland edges favor the two accipiters. Riparian canyons and desert waterways are especially important clues for Common Black Hawk. A dark soaring bird over rugged country could be a Zone-tailed Hawk, but the resemblance to a Turkey Vulture described in a secondary Arizona guide is only one identification aid, not a substitute for checking other marks.

The seven Arizona hawks

1. Red-tailed Hawk

Red-tailed Hawks are common Arizona buteos and regular residents of cities such as Tucson and Phoenix. They often become the first large hawk a new observer learns because an adult can show a reddish tail. That clue is useful, but it is not universal: plumage varies, and a distant or backlit bird may not display an obvious red tail.

Look for a broad-winged, short-tailed silhouette when the bird is circling or perched above roads, neighborhoods or open ground. Confirm the identification with several features rather than overall darkness or lightness. Arizona Game and Fish lists this species among common urban raptors.

2. Harris’s Hawk

Harris’s Hawks are another common urban hawk in Arizona and a strong candidate for sightings in the Sonoran Desert region. They belong to the buteo group, so their flight profile is broader and more soaring-oriented than that of an accipiter.

A secondary Arizona guide highlights cooperative hunting in this species. Treat that behavior as a useful observation when it occurs, not as a requirement for identification: a lone Harris’s Hawk is still a Harris’s Hawk. Urban edges, desert neighborhoods and open areas can all bring this species into view.

3. Cooper’s Hawk

Cooper’s Hawks are accipiters with short, rounded wings and a long tail. Arizona Game and Fish notes that they are increasingly common residents in Tucson. Their hunting style is often the giveaway: they pursue small birds through trees and make quick, controlled turns where a broad-winged buteo would be less maneuverable.

At a distance, focus on the combination of narrow-looking body, rounded wings and long tail rather than a single color patch. A Cooper’s Hawk may appear briefly between branches, cross a yard at low height or accelerate after a songbird.

4. Sharp-shinned Hawk

Sharp-shinned Hawks share the accipiter silhouette: compact rounded wings, a long tail and rapid flight through vegetation. The secondary Arizona guide describes them as smaller than Cooper’s Hawks, but size is not always conclusive. Distance, viewing angle and the presence of only one bird can make the two species difficult to separate.

When the bird is close enough, compare overall proportions and behavior. A very small accipiter making abrupt passes through dense cover may fit Sharp-shinned Hawk, while a larger-looking bird with a more substantial head and body may fit Cooper’s Hawk. Keep the identification tentative when the view is brief.

5. Zone-tailed Hawk

Zone-tailed Hawks are buteos with a dark overall appearance and a soaring flight profile. The secondary Arizona guide describes a resemblance to a Turkey Vulture in flight. That mimicry explanation can help explain why observers hesitate, but it should be treated as a guide’s interpretation rather than a definitive rule.

Use the full scene: a dark, broad-winged bird circling over rugged desert or canyon country is a candidate, but check tail pattern, wing shape and movement before deciding. Do not identify every dark soaring raptor as a Zone-tailed Hawk.

6. Common Black Hawk

Common Black Hawks are closely associated with riparian forests in canyons and deserts of the United States and northern Mexico. Cornell’s species account describes hunting from overhanging limbs or rocks in streambeds, where the hawk takes aquatic prey. Fish, reptiles, small mammals and invertebrates are all included in its diet.

A shallow stream, desert river or canyon corridor is therefore a major clue. The species’ name also points to its dark appearance, but habitat and hunting location are more dependable than color alone. A broad-winged hawk watching a watercourse from a low perch deserves closer attention than a generic “black hawk” label.

7. Ferruginous Hawk

Arizona Game and Fish’s 2021 educational guide calls the Ferruginous Hawk Arizona’s largest true hawk. The guide gives a wingspan of 4½ feet and identifies a white rump patch as a distinctive field mark. Those figures describe the species, not a statewide population measurement.

Its buteo shape—broad wings and a short tail—helps separate it from the narrow-winged accipiters. If a very large hawk shows a conspicuous pale rump while flying or turning, record that feature along with the bird’s size and flight pattern. Do not rely on a single impression of how pale or dark the entire bird appears.

How to identify a hawk in Arizona: a field procedure

  1. Watch the flight profile. Decide whether the wings look short and rounded or broad and built for soaring. This first split separates accipiters from buteos.
  2. Note the tail. Is it notably long, as in an accipiter, or relatively short, as in a buteo? If a red tail is visible, record it, but remember that Red-tailed Hawk plumage varies.
  3. Record the behavior. A bird cutting through trees after small birds suggests Cooper’s or Sharp-shinned Hawk. A bird circling high, perching over open ground or watching a stream points toward a buteo and its habitat-specific possibilities.
  4. Map the habitat. Urban neighborhoods favor common Red-tailed and Harris’s Hawks; Tucson observers may increasingly encounter Cooper’s Hawks. Riparian canyons and desert waterways raise the probability of Common Black Hawk.
  5. Look for one strong field mark. A red tail, white rump, dark vulture-like soaring appearance or a clearly long tail can narrow the options. Use that mark with silhouette and behavior rather than alone.
  6. Keep uncertainty visible. If the bird is distant, backlit or seen for only seconds, record it as an accipiter, buteo or “unidentified hawk” instead of forcing a species name.

Cooper’s Hawk versus Sharp-shinned Hawk

These are Arizona’s most easily confused pair in this seven-species set because both are accipiters. Both have short, rounded wings, long tails and a hunting style adapted to maneuvering through vegetation. A fast glimpse in a backyard rarely provides every needed detail.

Comparison point Cooper’s Hawk Sharp-shinned Hawk
Group silhouette Accipiter: rounded wings and long tail Accipiter: rounded wings and long tail
Relative size Generally the larger option Generally the smaller option
Arizona context Increasingly common in Tucson; hunts small birds through trees Can occur in the same broad identification problem
Confidence limit Size is not always conclusive at distance Size is not always conclusive at distance

Use several seconds of observation if possible: compare body bulk, head projection, tail proportions and the way the bird threads through cover. If those details are unavailable, a cautious “accipiter” identification is more accurate than an overconfident species call.

Where Arizona observers are most likely to encounter these hawks

Cities, yards and parks

Arizona Game and Fish identifies Red-tailed and Harris’s Hawks as common urban residents in Tucson, Phoenix and other cities. Cooper’s Hawks are increasingly common residents in Tucson. These sightings can happen around mature trees, open lawns, neighborhood edges and other places where prey is available.

Woodlands and tree-lined edges

Cooper’s and Sharp-shinned Hawks are the specialists to consider when a compact hawk darts between trunks or launches an ambush after a small bird. The key is the accipiter shape and pursuit style, not a general impression of brown or gray plumage.

Riparian corridors and desert canyons

Common Black Hawks are the clearest habitat-linked species in this list. Look along shallow streams, river corridors and canyon waterways, especially for a hawk using a limb or streambed rock as a hunting perch.

Open skies and soaring routes

Buteos are built for soaring. Red-tailed, Harris’s, Zone-tailed and Ferruginous Hawks may all require a comparison of wing width, tail length and distinctive marks while circling. A dark soaring bird should not automatically be called a Zone-tailed Hawk, and a large pale bird should not automatically be called Ferruginous without checking for the white rump and overall scale.

Living safely with hawks

Wild hawks are not pets. Arizona Game and Fish warns that raptors may pursue small pets or other domestic animals, defend nests and leave prey remains. Keep cats, small dogs and other vulnerable animals supervised outdoors, particularly where a hawk is repeatedly hunting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never approach a nest, attempt to handle a hawk or encourage close contact for a photograph. Give a nesting bird a wide berth and leave remains undisturbed. Watching from a distance protects both the observer and the raptor and reduces the chance of provoking defensive behavior.

How complete is this list?

This seven-species selection is designed for practical identification, not to represent every hawk an Arizona birder might encounter. The broader guide that informs the selection names 15 hawk species, and Arizona’s raptor community also includes eagles, owls and falcons. Arizona Game and Fish defines raptors broadly: “Birds of prey, also called raptors, include hawks, eagles, owls and falcons.”

No current statewide abundance estimate or official count of exactly seven hawk species is established by the sources used here. Treat the list as a starting framework: classify the silhouette, connect behavior to habitat, check a distinctive mark and preserve uncertainty when the view is poor.
