Black cats are not a single breed, and their coat color does not predict their personality. Their dark fur is linked to eumelanin, sunlight can make it look reddish, and beliefs about black cats have differed across cultures. Shelter studies also suggest that some black cats wait longer for adoption—but the results depend on the shelters and data studied.
1. Black is a coat color, not a breed
Black cats belong to many breeds, and many are mixed-breed domestic cats. The Bombay is a breed whose cats are always black, but a black coat alone does not identify a cat’s breed. PetMD and Zoetis Petcare both distinguish coat color from breed.

2. Eumelanin gives black fur its color
Black coat color is associated with eumelanin, a pigment. PetMD describes black as the most common feline coat color and says the gene for expressing eumelanin is dominant. Coat-color inheritance is more complex than a single gene determining every cat’s appearance, so this is a broad explanation rather than a complete account of feline genetics. PetMD’s veterinary-authored overview was updated September 3, 2025.

3. Sunlight can make a black coat look reddish
After prolonged sunlight exposure, black fur may develop reddish or orange highlights. The change is in the visible fur and can remain until that fur sheds; the appearance alone does not mean a cat’s skin has suddenly changed color or that it has a health problem. PetMD describes this coat-lightening effect.

4. “Black cats bring bad luck” is not a universal belief
Black-cat symbolism varies by place and period. A peer-reviewed review of black-cat bias documents both positive and negative beliefs. For example, black cats were required aboard British ships as good-luck omens until 1975. In southern England, one historical belief linked owning a black cat with a daughter’s marriage. These examples show why it is inaccurate to treat bad luck as a belief shared everywhere. The review discusses these traditions and their contexts.
5. The association with witchcraft has a complicated history
Black cats became associated in some European traditions with witchcraft and heresy. The peer-reviewed review discusses the 1233 papal bull Vox in Rama, often invoked in accounts of this history, while noting that interpretations of what the bull meant are debated. It is too simple to say that one document created every black-cat superstition: beliefs developed across different times and places. The historical review examines the association and the interpretive uncertainty.

6. Some shelter studies found longer waits for black cats
There is evidence of an adoption disadvantage in some settings, but it does not establish a single worldwide pattern or explain why it occurs. Outcomes differ among studies and countries, and a delay in time to adoption is not the same measurement as an overall adoption rate.
A two-shelter study
A study discussed in the peer-reviewed review examined records for more than 29,000 cats from two shelters. In that dataset, black cats took about 2.25 days longer on average to be adopted than cats that were not primarily black. That figure belongs to those records and comparison group; it is not a universal estimate for shelters. The review also describes other studies with differing results.

Colorado shelter data
In 2013, Colorado State University reported findings from nine years of adoption data at Larimer Humane Society and 18 years at Denver’s Dumb Friends League. In those studied shelters, adult black cats stayed approximately three more days than cats with black as a primary coat color, and four to six more days than cats of other colors. The university’s report concerns those shelters and periods, not every shelter. Colorado State University’s report describes the analysis.
7. A cat’s color does not tell you its personality
People may hold impressions about cats based on coat color, but color is not a reliable way to judge an individual cat’s temperament. The American Animal Hospital Association says genes governing coat color have not been found to influence behavior and emphasizes socialization and environment. It also notes limitations in the available studies. Meet the cat and ask about its behavior and history rather than relying on appearance. AAHA’s overview explains the distinction between color-based perceptions and behavior.

8. Adoption research is a reason to meet black cats, not to assume outcomes
The shelter findings are mixed and specific to the populations studied, but they give prospective adopters a practical reason not to overlook a black cat in a listing or at a shelter. Evaluate each animal as an individual: ask staff about its health, known history, and behavior, and spend time with it when possible. Coat color cannot tell you whether a particular cat will suit your home.
