The safest response is to remove an attached tick promptly, check your cat and its resting places for others, and ask your veterinarian about prevention suited to your cat and location.
1. There are many tick species, but only a small number are linked to significant feline disease
Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine says more than 800 tick species exist worldwide, while only around a dozen are associated with significant disease in cats. That global count is not a measure of an individual cat’s risk: exposure and the tick species present vary by location.

Ticks can transmit illnesses including feline infectious anemia, cytauxzoonosis, babesiosis, tularemia, and ehrlichiosis. Possible signs vary and can include fever, anemia, jaundice, breathing or neurologic problems, swollen lymph nodes, or joint swelling. Cornell notes that tularemia and ehrlichiosis are less commonly diagnosed in cats. A tick bite alone cannot establish that a cat has any of these conditions. Cornell’s tick guidance provides more detail.

Cornell reports no well-documented case of a cat developing clinical signs of Lyme disease, even though infection and antibodies have been found. Another Cornell article says cats’ natural susceptibility remains unclear; it describes laboratory infection and anecdotal Lyme-like cases. The practical takeaway is that Lyme disease in cats is not established in the same way it is in some other animals, but it should not be called impossible. Cornell’s Lyme disease overview explains that uncertainty.

3. A tick on your cat can also matter to people in your home
Pets can carry ticks indoors, where they may later bite a person. After your cat has been outside, checking its coat and removing any attached ticks promptly helps protect the household as well as the cat. The CDC’s tick guidance for pets and people describes this risk.
4. Remove an attached tick with steady, direct pressure
Use gloves and fine-tipped tweezers or forceps. Part the fur, grasp the tick as close to the skin as you can, and pull steadily straight outward in one motion. Avoid squeezing or crushing the tick’s body, and do not twist or jerk it. Cornell and the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) both recommend careful removal close to the attachment point. A fine-tipped tick-removal tweezer or forceps is the relevant tool category; no particular brand or model is endorsed here.

For further guidance, see CAPC’s tick guidelines and Cornell’s instructions above.
5. Check the removal site and watch your cat in the weeks after a bite
Look at the bite site for redness, swelling, or discharge. Contact your veterinarian if the area becomes inflamed or your cat develops weakness, lethargy, reduced appetite, fever, or other concerning changes. The CDC says signs of tick-borne disease in pets may take 7–21 days or longer to appear, so a cat seeming well immediately after removal does not rule out later signs. These symptoms can have many causes; a veterinarian must assess them rather than diagnosing a tick-borne illness from signs alone.

6. Cats need prevention products chosen specifically for cats
Never apply a dog-labeled tick product to a cat. Cats are sensitive to many chemicals, and the CDC advises asking a veterinarian before using tick-prevention products on them. Your veterinarian can recommend an option with feline-appropriate labeling and account for your cat’s health, lifestyle, local tick activity, and disease risks.
Available formulations for cats can include collars, topical products, and oral options, but the right choice depends on the individual cat and the product label. CAPC recommends year-round parasite control, while Cornell notes that keeping cats indoors can reduce exposure. These approaches are not one-size-fits-all: discuss a practical prevention plan with your veterinarian, especially if your cat goes outdoors. CDC guidance, CAPC recommendations, and Cornell’s feline tick information support species-specific precautions.

7. An attached tick does not automatically mean a preventive product failed
CAPC explains that some products affect a tick only after it bites, and that ticks in the surrounding environment can lead to reinfestation. Whether a product is working as intended depends on its label, use, and circumstances. If you find a tick on a cat receiving prevention, remove it safely and ask your veterinarian to interpret the product’s instructions and advise whether anything should change.
8. Daily checks are useful for cats that go outdoors
Check outdoor cats daily, especially after time outside, and remove attached ticks promptly. Pay attention to the coat and the areas where ticks may be harder to spot, and inspect bedding or favorite resting places if you find one. A tick check is a practical habit, not a guarantee that every tick or bite will be prevented.
