But the right remover depends on the surface, how old the stain is, how much scent you can tolerate, and whether you are cleaning by hand or with a carpet machine. The recommendations below reflect the publisher’s reported testing—not a controlled, independently replicated comparison.
How Cats.com chose its eight picks
In its May 31, 2026 review, Cats.com author Katelynn Sobus says she spoke with pet owners, read customer reviews, and tried products on her own carpets and furniture, paying attention to cleaning effectiveness, fragrance, and time. The page reports 250 hours of research, 88 brands vetted, and eight features reviewed; those totals are reported by the publisher and are not independently audited. Its observations are useful for comparing practical tradeoffs, but they are not laboratory results.

For urine odor, an enzyme-based cleaner is a reasonable starting point. Whatever product you choose, follow its current label: confirm the surface is compatible, use the stated amount and contact time, and allow for a second application if odor remains. Formulas and instructions can change, so check the bottle rather than relying on an old review for directions.
Eight cat urine removers, compared
| Product and Cats.com category | What the review reports | Tradeoff to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Mister Max Anti Icky Poo Unscented — overall | The author reports minimal fragrance and effective stain and urine-odor removal. She saturated the area and returned in about 15–20 minutes. | The review says the instructions do not specify contact time. The author noticed potentially slippery residue on hard floors and recommends testing a small area and rinsing. |
| Simple Solution Extreme Stain and Odor Remover — fast-acting | The author reports that many stains took five to ten minutes to clean. The sprayer has three settings. | Some stains needed a second application, and the author found the sprayer controls confusing; read the label before use. |
| Angry Orange Pet Odor Eliminator — concentrate | The review says an 8-ounce bottle makes 128 ounces when diluted and identifies orange essential oil in the product. | The author describes a strong fragrance and says to keep pets out until the product is dry. Check the current formula and label before use; this review does not establish veterinary guidance for the current formula. |
| Rocco & Roxie Pet Stain and Odor Eliminator — color-safe | The author reports using it on carpet, laundry, and hard floors, and says the product is approved by the Carpet and Rug Institute. | The author found the scent strong and minty. The approval claim is reported by Cats.com; current certification status is not established here. |
| Nature’s Miracle Advanced Cat Stain and Odor Remover — budget | The review reports a 15-minute cleaning time and use on urine, feces, and vomit. The author observed no bleaching or foamy residue in her test. | It comes in two scents; the author found the fresh scent noticeable. Check compatibility on the label for your specific surface. |
| Emmy’s Best Pet Products Enzyme-Based Pet Odor and Stain Eraser — scent-focused | The author describes a lavender scent and a stated use time of five to ten minutes. | Some older stains needed repeat applications, and the author noticed some foamy residue on carpet. |
| Stuart Pet Supply Co. Carpet Cleaner Solution and Deodorizer — carpet machines | The author used it in a Hoover Smartwash and reports good cleaning. | The solution produced suds, so she rinsed with water. The review also notes that some customer reviewers disagreed about stain and odor performance. |
| Hoover Smartwash Automatic — carpet machine | The author reports using it on dog urine and cat vomit, and liked its dry-only mode and ease of disassembly. | She found the brush-roll bar difficult to clean and noted no obvious clean-water fill line. A machine is an optional, expensive tool—not a requirement for every spot. |
The review does not provide a consistent, side-by-side value for every product’s label contact time, surface restrictions, or repeat-treatment rate. Treat the times and outcomes above as the author’s specific observations, not a promise for every stain or home.

Choose by surface, scent, and cleaning setup
For carpets and rugs
Start by checking that the label permits use on the carpet’s material and color. Rocco & Roxie is the review’s color-safe pick and is reported to work on carpet, but its scent may be strong. For carpet-machine use, the author tried Stuart Pet Supply Co. solution in a Hoover Smartwash and rinsed afterward because of suds. Do not put a spot cleaner into a machine unless its label says it is suitable for that use.
For hard floors and furniture
Confirm the product is suitable for the exact finish or upholstery, and test an inconspicuous area first. The author reported possible slippery residue from Mister Max on hard floors and recommends rinsing. A cleaner that works on one surface should not be assumed safe for another.

For fragrance-sensitive homes
Mister Max Anti Icky Poo Unscented is the review’s lowest-fragrance option. Several alternatives have a noticeable scent: the author describes Angry Orange as strongly fragranced, Rocco & Roxie as strongly minty, Nature’s Miracle’s fresh scent as noticeable, and Emmy’s Best as lavender-scented. Fragrance preference is personal, so avoid assuming that a scented product will mask rather than bother you.

For a fresh spot versus an older stain
Fresh urine is generally easier to address than an old or severe stain. Blot or remove what you can, then follow the cleaner’s label, including its contact time. For an older stain, give the product the full labeled dwell time and consider repeat treatment if odor remains. Cats.com reports repeat applications for some stains with Simple Solution and Emmy’s Best; that does not establish a guaranteed result for every product or stain.
Rank #3
- FOR SEVERE CAT MESSES: Powerful enzymatic formula works to eliminate tough stains and odors from cat urine, diarrhea, vomit and other bio-based accidents.

Can old pet stains be removed?
Sometimes, but older stains are often more stubborn than fresh ones, and urine odor can be particularly difficult to remove. Reapply a compatible cleaner according to its label if odor remains. Severe contamination may persist despite cleaning, and replacing the affected material can be necessary. No cleaner can be promised to remove every old stain or odor.
Do homemade cat urine removers work?
Vinegar or hydrogen-peroxide mixtures may improve the visible stain without fully removing the odor. Hydrogen peroxide can bleach some materials, so test a discreet spot and check surface compatibility before applying it more widely. A purpose-made enzyme cleaner is a useful starting point for bodily-waste odors, but it still must be used according to its label.
Rank #4
- TOUGH ON STAINS AND ODORS: This stain and odor remover is tough on cat urine, feces, vomit, drool and other organic stains and odors.
- MULTI-SURFACE USE: When used and stored as directed, this product is safe for use on carpets, hard floors, furniture, fabrics and more.
- SAFE FOR PETS AND HOME: We’ve been loved by pet parents for over 35 years, so we know the importance of having effective stain and odor remover that, when used and stored as directed, is safe to use around pets.
- CITRUS SCENT: In addition to removing stains and odors, this product freshens with a light citrus scent.
- GUARANTEED TO WORK OR YOUR MONEY BACK**: We’re sure you’re going to be very happy and mess free. But, if you are not satisfied with this product for any reason, we will make it right. **For terms of guarantee, see back of product.
Is vinegar or hydrogen peroxide better for urine stains?
The available comparison does not establish that one is universally better. Either may affect the stain without fully resolving odor, and peroxide can bleach some items. Choose based on material compatibility and test a hidden area first rather than applying either broadly.
Why does my carpet still smell like urine after cleaning?
Odor may remain when urine has soaked into carpet backing or another underlying material, when the cleaner did not reach the affected area, or when the treatment needs repeating. Check the product’s directions and whether it is intended for that carpet, then repeat only as the label allows. If the contamination is severe or has reached material that cannot be cleaned effectively, replacement may be the practical option.

What not to mix with urine cleaners
Never mix bleach with urine or with ammonia-containing cleaners. Verywell Health’s medically reviewed guidance says, “Never mix household chemicals, like bleach and ammonia, as they create toxic gases.” The article by Jennifer Sabour, MS, updated August 26, 2026, and medically reviewed by Michael Menna, DO, explains that chloramine gas can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs and can be fatal in large concentrations (Verywell Health’s bleach-and-ammonia safety guidance).
