These eight DIY cat wheelchair and walker designs offer different ways to support a cat’s mobility, but none should be treated as a ready-made prescription. The right setup depends on which limbs need support, your cat’s measurements, and veterinary guidance. Use the ideas below to discuss options with your veterinarian before building or fitting a device.
Start with the support your cat needs
A wheelchair is not automatically appropriate for every cat with limited mobility. Ask your veterinarian to assess the cause of the problem and whether a device could help. Best Friends Animal Society distinguishes rear-support carts from four-wheel configurations, which may be considered for cats with front-limb problems, weakness in all four legs, or cerebellar hypoplasia. Those categories are not a substitute for an individual assessment.

The American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians’ Model Standards for Practice of Veterinary Rehabilitation, updated in May 2026, says: “Patient care shall be provided under the medical oversight of a supervising veterinarian.” Its standards also call for evaluation after diagnosis and veterinary referral or clearance, appropriate supervision, monitoring pain and response, and an individualized plan.

Eight DIY designs to discuss with your veterinarian
The list below summarizes the designs as described in Catster’s roundup. It is a materials-and-concept overview, not a set of verified build instructions: several linked original pages or videos were not available for examination, and these builds were not tested. Treat each as a starting point, not proof of safe fit.

1. PVC physical-therapy walker attributed to hoc31rescue
The roundup lists PVC pipe and joints, plastic wheels, fabric, and Velcro. It advises measuring the cat before assembly and describes a fabric sling as an alternative to a harness. This is a frame-and-sling concept; the cat’s measurements and the kind of support needed would need to be worked out with a veterinarian.
2. PVC wheelchair from Instructables
The listed materials include PVC pipe and fittings, cement, bolts and washers, wheels, foam, cord, and a cat harness. Catster describes a rear-support crossbar and padding. The material list alone does not establish the frame’s dimensions or whether its harness and support points suit a particular cat.
Rank #2

3. “$30 DIY Pet Wheelchair,” attributed to Little Things
The roundup lists PVC pipe, small wheels, a harness, and straps. It says the seat can be made from duct tape or replaced with fabric or an abdominal sling. The $30 figure is a historical title label, not a verified current build cost.
4. Small-sized pet wheelchair attributed to Mark Lapid
This design was made for a French Bulldog and may be adaptable for a similarly sized cat, according to Catster. Listed materials include PVC parts, lawn-mower wheels, fasteners, Velcro, adhesive, and an abdominal brace. A dog design does not automatically fit a cat: body shape, posture, support needs, and measurements all matter.
Rank #3
- REMOVABLE CAT STRAP DESIGN: Compared to the old model, our new cat wheelchair features a removable upper wheelchair vest strap. When your cat is not using the wheelchair, you can easily remove the wheelchair and use it as a regular cat harness . Additionally, you can wash it effortlessly to keep your pet clean and healthy.
- ADJUSTABLE DESIGN: This cat wheelchair for back legs has an adjustable design, enabling you to adjust the height, width, and length within a certain range to ensure your pet's comfort and safety. - REMINDER: Please measure your pet's hip width, back height and weight before purchasing. If your pet is very weak or seriously injured, we recommend that you seek veterinary attention and assistance as soon as possible, and use the wheelchair when the pet is better. We suggest that the wheelchair should be worn or exercised for 2-5 hours a day (depending on your pet's physical condition).
5. Front-leg wheelchair from Instructables
This is a different support problem from the rear-support frames. Catster describes an axle-and-wheel design with a board or platform and notes that the original uses a 3D printer. Because it is intended for front-leg support, do not assume that a rear-support cart can be adapted by simply changing the sling.
6. “$20 Homemade Cat Walker,” attributed to Sara Hill
The roundup lists PVC parts, caster wheels, and fabric. It emphasizes measuring the cat’s height and the distance between limbs before making the sling. The $20 figure is a source headline label, not a current verified cost.
Rank #4

- High Quality & Portable: This wheelchair for cats' back legs is made of aviation aluminum surface-treated for anti-corrosion and oxidation. It features PU tires, ensuring safety and durability. When wearing this wheelchair, pets can walk easily without affecting urination or defecation.
7. Wagon-based pet wheelchair attributed to Dicas para gateiros
This concept adapts a small wagon and uses a harness, wire rope, clamps, and a cushion. The wagon frame must be cut and the cut edges sanded, as the roundup describes. Skipping the finishing step can leave rough edges where the cat or handler may come into contact with the frame.

Compare the designs by fit and construction
Before choosing a concept, compare what it asks of the cat and builder—not just the apparent simplicity of the frame.
- Which limbs need support: most concepts above are described as rear-support designs; the Instructables front-leg wheelchair addresses a different need.
- How the cat is held: designs use a harness, fabric sling, abdominal sling or brace, or a towel or pet sling. These are not interchangeable without considering the cat’s condition and fit.
- What must be measured: the roundup explicitly calls out measuring before building; the Sara Hill walker listing highlights height and the distance between limbs. A frame that is too high, low, wide, or narrow may not provide appropriate support.
- Materials and tools: PVC or CPVC pipe and fittings, wheels, fabric, padding, fasteners, and adhesives appear across the concepts. The Instructables front-leg version adds a 3D printer; the wagon design requires cutting and sanding the frame.
- Instruction detail: Catster’s roundup supplies a broad overview of all eight concepts, while the Cuteness guide is described as giving specific CPVC cut dimensions and assembly steps.
Plan a safer build and introduction
- Get a veterinary assessment. Ask whether a mobility device is appropriate, which limbs require support, and what signs of pain or distress to monitor. Follow the veterinarian’s guidance on referral, clearance, and supervision.
- Choose a design for the support problem. Do not select a rear-support frame for a front-limb issue simply because its plans look easier to follow. Bring the concept and materials list to your veterinarian or rehabilitation professional.
- Measure the cat before cutting parts. The source roundup stresses measurement, and the Sara Hill walker specifically calls out height and the distance between limbs. Confirm which measurements and body position are relevant for the proposed frame and sling.
- Inspect contact points and construction. Check that fasteners, cut edges, and frame parts cannot create rough or sharp contact points. For the wagon concept, Catster specifically describes sanding after cutting the frame.
- Introduce the device gradually under guidance. Cuteness advises short initial periods and increasing duration as the cat becomes comfortable. Stop and seek veterinary advice if the cat appears painful or is not responding well; do not force use.
What the available plans do—and do not—establish
Catster’s page title appears as “8 Amazing DIY Cat Wheelchair Plans You Can Build at Home (With Pictures).” The search-result rendering showed an update date of September 15, 2026, while the fetched page showed June 19, 2025. The eight concepts and material descriptions here reflect that roundup; the conflicting displayed dates do not resolve when every linked plan was last checked.
The Cuteness guide is the only linked build guide described here with examined assembly detail. No comparative safety testing, clinical assessment of the eight designs, success rate, or current cost verification is established by these sources. A veterinarian-assessed custom cart may be an alternative when a DIY concept does not match the cat’s needs.
