There is no evidence that cats can sense a supernatural force called “bad energy.” Studies do suggest that cats can respond to some observable human cues, such as facial expressions, posture, and voice. Their powerful senses may also alert them to scents, sounds, or movement that people miss. None of that lets us conclude what a cat noticed in a particular moment—or whether a person is “bad.”
What research says about cats and human emotions
Studies have tested how cats respond to cues people can see or hear, not to paranormal energy or hidden moral qualities.

They may respond to visible and audible cues
In two experiments, researchers Moriah Galvan and Jennifer Vonk examined cats’ responses to human facial and postural expressions and emotionally charged vocal cues. They concluded that “Domestic cats were only modestly sensitive to emotion, particularly when displayed by their owner.” That supports limited sensitivity to some observable cues, not a general ability to read a person’s inner state. Galvan and Vonk’s 2016 study
A 2020 cross-modal study found that cats matched some emotional facial expressions with associated vocal signals, particularly when expressions were stronger. The experiment concerned signals presented to the cats; it did not test whether they detect “bad energy.” 2020 cross-modal study

Cats can use a person’s reaction as social information
In a 2015 social-referencing experiment, 79% of the cats looked between their owner and a potentially frightening object. The researchers also reported that cats changed their behavior to some extent in line with the owner’s emotional message. That percentage describes the cats in that experiment, not all cats or a general ability to sense human feelings. Merola, Prato-Previde, and Marshall-Pescini’s study
Why a cat might react to a person or place
A cat’s reaction can have several possible explanations. The behavior alone does not identify which one applies.

Smell, sound, and movement
The American Animal Hospital Association notes that “Cats also rely more than humans do on smell, hearing, and touch to experience the world.” A cat may notice an unfamiliar scent, a sound, or a movement that a person does not. Veterinary behavior guidance also identifies visitors’ voices and movements, unfamiliar scents, and frightening sounds as possible triggers. 2022 AAHA Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats and VCA guidance on fear and anxiety in cats

Emotional cues and learned associations
A cat might respond to a person’s posture, voice, movement, routine, or a past association with similar cues. Research makes sensitivity to some expressions and social signals plausible, but it does not show that cats understand sadness or another emotion as people do. Nor does a cat’s response prove that it has detected a hidden trait.

How to interpret common cat behaviors
Your cat hides from a visitor
The visitor’s movement, voice, or scent could be relevant, as could a sound or animal nearby. Give the cat access to a safe retreat and let it choose whether to approach. Without observing the circumstances, you cannot know which cue, if any, prompted the hiding.
Your cat approaches when you are sad
The cat may be responding to visible posture, movement, voice, a change in routine, or a learned association. The studies support the possibility that cats respond to some observable emotional cues; they do not establish that a cat recognizes sadness in the human sense.

- Top-Tier Dual Interactive Fun: Qraxond's new indoor cat toy has dual motors, controlling random rotation of butterfly and plush tail swing rod accessories, bringing fun, exciting play for kittens and adult cats. Hide-and-Seek: The animal tail-shaped plush hides under the cover cloth, rotating irregularly to appear/disappear, creating a hide-and-seek game. It mimics real prey, bringing unpredictable chases to stimulate the cat's brain and senses. Irregular Rotating Butterfly: The top has an auto-rotating butterfly that rotates, pauses or swings to simulate real flight, keeping the cat engaged. Various interactions ensure the cat gets enough exercise to avoid obesity
- 3 Adjustable Speed Modes: Customize the excitement with separate buttons for the butterfly and tail. Choose from 3 settings: Steady (Blue Light), Active (Purple Light), and Random (Yellow Light). Suitable for high-energy cats to burn off steam or for calm cats to enjoy gentle play. Keep your feline entertained and prevent boredom, especially when they are home alone
- Touch-Sensitive Activation: Your Cat's in Control! With smart touch-sensor technology, just tap the device to fire up the fun mode, it will kick off a 5-minute automatic play session instantly. Simply tap again to reactivate it for another 5-minute cycle. This smart loop ensures your cat gets sufficient exercise and prevents overstimulation
- Large Rechargeable Battery: Enjoy long-lasting play with the built-in 2500mAh battery. It charges fully in just 2.5 hours via the included USB cable (use a 5V adapter only). The efficient auto on/off cycle extends battery life, making it convenient for busy pet owners while ensuring your cat gets healthy, moderate exercise
- Realistic Bird Chirping: Elevate the hunt with lifelike sound. The built-in speaker emits authentic bird chirps to attract your cat's attention and stimulate their prey drive. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves
Your cat stares at an empty space or reacts before you notice anything
An unnoticed sound, scent, or movement is one reasonable possibility given cats’ sensory abilities. The behavior does not establish that the cat saw a spirit, and the cause of a single episode may not be knowable.
Your cat reacts to one particular person
Take the reaction as information about your cat’s behavior in that situation, not as a reliable verdict on the person’s character or safety. Notice what happens before the reaction and let the cat disengage rather than forcing contact.

What to watch for—and when to call a veterinarian
To make sense of a behavior, note the setting, what happened just beforehand, and whether the reaction changes when an observable cue changes. Also notice whether the cat seems fearful, curious, or socially engaged. This can help identify patterns, but it is not a test for paranormal perception and may not reveal a single cause.
Contact a veterinarian if fear, aggression, hiding, or another behavior change is persistent, escalating, or unusual for your cat. Do not diagnose anxiety, pain, or illness from one incident. If redirected aggression is suspected, veterinary guidance recommends an examination and may call for referral to a veterinary behaviorist. Environmental enrichment—including relevant scent enrichment—may be discussed as supportive care, not as a paranormal remedy or guaranteed fix.
