Several domestic cat breeds can remind people of tigers or lions, but they do it in different ways: the Toyger has the clearest bold stripes, while ticked coats, spots, muscular builds, and full ruffs create other wild-cat impressions. These are visual similarities, not signs that a pet is a wild cat. Here are eight breeds selected for their tiger- or lion-like appearance, plus what their coats and care can mean at home.
How to read a “wild-looking” cat
A cat may suggest a tiger through stripes, a smaller wild cat through a spotted or ticked coat, or a lion through a substantial silhouette and abundant fur around the neck. The resemblance is subjective: it describes appearance, not a breed’s temperament or suitability for a household. Coat pattern, body shape, and grooming needs are more useful distinctions than a single “exotic” label.

Eight breeds with tiger- or lion-like looks
1. Toyger: the clearest tiger pattern
The Toyger was developed for a miniature-tiger appearance. The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy describes a long, muscular body and bold, modified mackerel stripes, including a distinctive braided or vertical effect. It says, “The Toyger has been bred to resemble a miniature tiger but with the temperament of a domestic pet.” The council also notes that no new wild-cat outcross was used in the breed’s development. GCCF’s Toyger profile is a useful reference for the breed’s intended look; resemblance alone cannot predict an individual cat’s behavior.

The Abyssinian’s short, warmly ticked coat gives it an even, subtly banded appearance rather than tiger-style stripes or large spots. TICA describes the breed as alert and athletic, with a look that can suggest a small mountain lion or cougar. Its ancestry is uncertain: TICA notes that genetic studies point to coastal areas around the Bay of Bengal in India as possible forebears, and that the traditional Zula story is not documented as a link to today’s breed. TICA’s Abyssinian profile describes the breed’s appearance and activity level.

3. Somali: a longer coat, ruff, and bushy tail
The Somali is the semi-long-haired counterpart to the Abyssinian, retaining a ticked coat while adding a fuller outline, ear tufts, a neck ruff, and a bushy, fox-like tail. Those features can create a lion-like impression around the neck and tail, even without stripes. TICA describes the breed’s coat and silhouette, while the Cat Fanciers’ Association characterizes Somalis as active and curious. CFA recommends weekly combing to remove dead hair and help control shedding. TICA’s Somali profile and CFA’s Somali profile provide breed and coat-care details.
4. Pixie Bob: a wild-looking appearance on the list
Pixie Bob is included among breeds that can look wild-cat-like, but appearance claims do not establish a breed’s ancestry. The available association references here do not independently verify the origin story sometimes attached to the breed, so it should not be presented as settled fact. Consider the individual cat’s coat, build, and care needs rather than assuming a wild lineage from its look.

5. Chausie: a large, athletic impression
The Chausie is another breed included for a wild-looking appearance. Specific origin and care claims were not independently confirmed in the breed references consulted for this article, so avoid treating an origin story or a particular temperament as guaranteed. If considering one, evaluate the individual cat and seek reliable breed-specific guidance alongside the visual appeal.
6. Maine Coon: a mane-like outline
A Maine Coon’s long coat and substantial outline can suggest a lion’s mane, making coat volume and silhouette—not tiger stripes—the main source of resemblance. That comparison is visual; no exact size range is asserted here because the figure published in the title-matching Catster article was not independently confirmed by the breed-association references used for this article.

7. Egyptian Mau: naturally spotted and athletic
The Egyptian Mau has a naturally spotted coat, a muscular build, and an alert appearance. CFA describes its spots as randomly distributed and recommends weekly combing to control shedding and help prevent hairballs. Those spots can evoke a spotted wild cat, though they are not tiger stripes. See CFA’s Egyptian Mau profile for its description and coat-care advice.
8. Ocicat: a spotted, muscular look
The Ocicat’s spotted, muscular appearance can recall a wild cat, but the visual resemblance should not be taken as proof of wild ancestry. Origin claims attached to the breed were not independently verified in the association references consulted here, so this description is limited to the appearance identified in the Catster list.

Choose for care and personality, not appearance alone
A striking coat does not tell you how much attention, grooming, activity, or adaptation a cat will need. Among the sources cited here, TICA describes Abyssinians as active; CFA describes Somalis as active and curious and recommends weekly combing for their coats. CFA also recommends weekly combing for Egyptian Maus. Before choosing a breed, look into its day-to-day needs, ask about the particular cat’s behavior and health, and be realistic about routine coat care. The available breed sources do not establish blanket behavior guarantees for all cats of a breed.
