Wolf spiders are not generally considered a major poisoning threat to cats. A suspected bite is more likely to cause local discomfort than serious illness, and eating a wolf spider is unlikely to cause venom toxicity. But a spider may be misidentified, and bites from some other spiders can be dangerous. If your cat has worsening pain, repeated vomiting, tremors, breathing trouble, or marked weakness, contact a veterinarian promptly.
What happens if a cat is bitten by a wolf spider?
A suspected wolf spider bite may cause discomfort around the bite site. A cat might limp, hold a paw close to the body, or lick the area. These signs do not confirm that a wolf spider was responsible: bites can be difficult to identify, and the spider may not be available to inspect.

Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed article describes wolf spider bites as uncomfortable and usually self-limiting. It does not provide a clinical study or a numerical estimate of how often bites occur in cats. Merck Veterinary Manual likewise cautions that spider bites can be difficult to recognize.

Are wolf spiders poisonous to cats if eaten?
Eating a wolf spider is considered unlikely to cause venom toxicity. Venom is introduced through a bite; swallowing a spider is a different exposure. A cat that eats an insect may still develop an upset stomach. If your cat becomes unwell after eating a spider, or you are unsure what it ate, contact your veterinarian for advice.

When should you contact a veterinarian?
Use the cat’s symptoms and how they change—not a guess about the spider’s identity—to decide how urgently to seek help.
Mild local irritation
If your cat seems otherwise well and has only mild irritation, tell your veterinary clinic what happened and describe the signs. Ask what to monitor. Contact the clinic if the irritation persists or worsens, or if the site becomes increasingly red or swollen, or develops fur loss or other signs that could indicate infection.

Worsening or systemic signs
Seek prompt veterinary advice for worsening pain, repeated vomiting, tremors, muscle cramping, difficulty breathing, marked weakness, or other signs affecting more than the bite site. Do not wait to identify the spider if your cat is significantly ill. Merck reports that cats are highly vulnerable to black widow envenomation, which can cause serious signs including agitation, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, tremors, and respiratory distress.

Why the spider’s identity matters
Appearance alone may not settle what bit your cat. Merck Veterinary Manual says that in the United States, widow spiders (Latrodectus species) and brown spiders, mostly Loxosceles species, are the two groups capable of medically important bites. Medically important species vary in other regions, too. Location and clinical signs help a veterinarian assess the risk; a single visual feature is not a reliable basis for ruling out a more dangerous spider.
Merck’s pet-owner reference, reviewed in October 2020 and updated in September 2024, says: “Poisonous spider bites are relatively uncommon and difficult to recognize.” This uncertainty is one reason to seek professional guidance when signs are significant or the spider is unknown.

How common are wolf spider bites in cats?
The available sources provide no named statistic for the rate of wolf spider bites in cats or the proportion that cause severe illness. Catster calls them relatively rare but gives no study, denominator, or numerical rate. That supports cautious reassurance, not a percentage or a guarantee about an individual cat.
What to do after a possible spider encounter
- Move your cat away from the spider. Pet Poison Helpline advises removing a pet from the area and monitoring it if you see it playing with a spider.
- Note what you observed. Tell the veterinary clinic when the encounter happened, what signs you have noticed, and whether they are improving or worsening. Do not delay care to capture or identify a spider.
- Contact a veterinarian when symptoms persist, worsen, or affect your cat’s general condition. If severe signs appear, seek prompt care rather than waiting for a definite identification.
Pet Poison Helpline’s spider guidance is general exposure information and includes a disclaimer that it is not veterinary advice. A veterinarian can assess your cat’s condition and advise you on next steps.
