Try prey-like play, food puzzles, and simple hide-and-seek games, then follow your cat’s lead. The best game is one your cat enjoys and can succeed at: let them catch the toy, keep sessions short, and choose activities that suit their mobility.
Eight games to try with your cat
Offer these as a menu, not a checklist. Some cats love chasing; others prefer sniffing out food or batting a toy across the floor. Switch activities when your cat loses interest.

1. Make a wand toy move like prey
Drag a toy on a wand along the floor, let it disappear behind a box, then make it dart or pause. Give your cat chances to pounce and catch it. Keep the toy away from your hands and supervise the game; put the wand away when play ends because string can tangle around a cat or be swallowed. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends interactive play with toys, and International Cat Care advises care with string-like toys.
2. Try a gentle game of fetch
Toss a small, safe toy a short distance. Your cat may bring it back, bat it toward you, or simply chase it. Some cats retrieve naturally; there is no need to insist if yours does not. VCA’s kitten game guidance includes fetch.

- Top-Tier Dual Interactive Fun: Qraxond's new indoor cat toy has dual motors, controlling random rotation of butterfly and plush tail swing rod accessories, bringing fun, exciting play for kittens and adult cats. Hide-and-Seek: The animal tail-shaped plush hides under the cover cloth, rotating irregularly to appear/disappear, creating a hide-and-seek game. It mimics real prey, bringing unpredictable chases to stimulate the cat's brain and senses. Irregular Rotating Butterfly: The top has an auto-rotating butterfly that rotates, pauses or swings to simulate real flight, keeping the cat engaged. Various interactions ensure the cat gets enough exercise to avoid obesity
- 3 Adjustable Speed Modes: Customize the excitement with separate buttons for the butterfly and tail. Choose from 3 settings: Steady (Blue Light), Active (Purple Light), and Random (Yellow Light). Suitable for high-energy cats to burn off steam or for calm cats to enjoy gentle play. Keep your feline entertained and prevent boredom, especially when they are home alone
- Touch-Sensitive Activation: Your Cat's in Control! With smart touch-sensor technology, just tap the device to fire up the fun mode, it will kick off a 5-minute automatic play session instantly. Right after the play session ends, it switches directly to touch-sensitive standby mode, where the purple indicator light flashes every 20 seconds. Simply tap again to reactivate it for another 5-minute cycle. This smart loop ensures your cat gets sufficient exercise and prevents overstimulation
- Large Rechargeable Battery: Enjoy long-lasting play with the built-in 2500mAh battery. It charges fully in just 2.5 hours via the included USB cable (use a 5V adapter only). The efficient auto on/off cycle extends battery life, making it convenient for busy pet owners while ensuring your cat gets healthy, moderate exercise
- Realistic Bird Chirping: Elevate the hunt with lifelike sound. The built-in speaker emits authentic bird chirps to attract your cat's attention and stimulate their prey drive. Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves
3. Turn a meal into a puzzle
Put some of your cat’s regular dry-food ration in a food-dispensing puzzle. Batting or rolling the feeder releases pieces and gives your cat a foraging activity. Count that food as part of the normal daily ration, and check that your cat eats enough overall. A homemade feeder should have no sharp edges. VCA describes food puzzles as indoor enrichment.
4. Hide a toy or a few pieces of food
Place a favorite toy or a few pieces from your cat’s daily ration in easy-to-find spots. As your cat learns the game, vary the hiding places. Keep food finds accessible, and make the search manageable rather than frustrating. VCA recommends food-searching and hiding toys as enrichment.

6. Roll a ball or toy mouse

How to make play engaging
Let your cat complete the hunt
Move toys in ways that invite stalking and chasing, but pause often enough for your cat to catch them. As VCA’s veterinary behavior guidance puts it: “Cats need to be successful or they will lose interest.” The advice comes from VCA Animal Hospitals’ play and play-toy guidance.
Use short sessions and follow your cat’s rhythm
VCA suggests several daily play sessions, often around ten minutes; another VCA page advises at least three short sessions. These are practical recommendations, not a fixed requirement for every cat. Dawn and dusk can be good times to try because cats are often active around those periods. Rotate toys to renew interest, and stop or change games when your cat disengages. VCA’s play guidance and indoor enrichment guidance cover session length and variety.

Keep games safe and comfortable
- Use toys, not hands or feet. Redirect biting and pouncing to a toy; bites and scratches can injure people. VCA’s play guidance and enrichment guidance advise against encouraging play with body parts.
- Supervise string-like toys. Never leave a cat alone with a wand, string, yarn, elastic, or another toy they could ingest. Swallowed string can cause serious injury; put these toys away after play. International Cat Care’s kitten booklet and VCA’s play guidance address this risk.
- Check toys and homemade equipment. Avoid small pieces a cat could swallow, replace damaged toys, and check homemade puzzle feeders for sharp edges. VCA’s toy guidance and indoor enrichment guidance offer safety advice.
- Adapt the activity to the cat. Keep play short and low impact for older cats or cats with mobility limitations. If a health condition affects what activity is safe, ask your veterinarian for guidance. VCA discusses adapting exercise for cats with health-related needs.
