It is not established as a routine supplement for healthy cats. If your cat is losing weight or has persistent digestive problems, a veterinarian should investigate the cause rather than relying on symptoms or trying enzymes at home.
What do digestive enzymes do for cats?
The pancreas has two main roles. Its exocrine tissue releases digestive enzymes that help break down protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Its endocrine tissue produces hormones, including insulin and glucagon.

When the pancreas does not make or release enough digestive enzymes, food is not properly digested. This condition is called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). In cats, chronic pancreatitis is the most common cause described in the Merck Veterinary Manual; masses that obstruct the pancreatic duct are uncommon causes.
Merck reports that clinical signs generally do not appear until approximately 90% or more of the pancreas’s exocrine functional capacity has been lost. That figure describes the functional loss associated with signs, not how common EPI is among cats.

Does my cat need digestive enzymes?
Enzyme replacement is a standard treatment for cats diagnosed with EPI. The available veterinary guidance does not establish a benefit from routine over-the-counter enzyme supplements for otherwise healthy cats. A supplement should not take the place of a diagnosis, especially when a cat is losing weight or has ongoing digestive signs.
Signs that warrant a veterinary visit
- Weight loss, sometimes despite eating more than usual
- Loose, frequent, or unusually large-volume stools or diarrhea
- Pale, greasy, or foul-smelling stools
- Vomiting or reduced appetite, which can also occur with other conditions
These signs are not specific to EPI. Stool appearance alone cannot confirm the condition, and other digestive or systemic diseases can cause similar problems.

How is feline EPI diagnosed?
Veterinarians diagnose EPI using a blood test for serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI). The Merck Veterinary Manual, updated in September 2025, states that a feline serum TLI concentration of 8.0 mcg/L or less is diagnostic for EPI.

Serum cobalamin (vitamin B12) and folate tests can also help assess the cat’s condition and guide treatment. If signs continue despite enzyme and vitamin treatment, the veterinarian may investigate concurrent small-intestinal disease or another cause.

How is EPI treated?
Most cats with EPI can be managed with pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. The enzymes are given with food, with the product and amount set by the veterinarian. Treatment often needs to continue long term because the pancreatic tissue loss that causes EPI is generally irreversible.
Powder, tablets, capsules, and other options
Merck’s professional guidance says powdered pancreatic enzyme products are more effective than tablets or capsules, and especially more effective than enteric-coated products. The evidence here does not establish that one retail brand is better than another. Merck also describes fresh pancreatic tissue as an alternative; ask a veterinarian about suitability and safe sourcing rather than obtaining or preparing it independently.

Once signs are controlled, a veterinarian may gradually reduce the enzyme amount to find the lowest effective dose. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without veterinary direction.
Nutrition and vitamin support
Cobalamin deficiency is common in cats with EPI, so supplementation may be needed. Diet can also be adjusted to the individual cat: guidance authored by the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and published by VCA Canada identifies reduced fiber as a consideration and recommends adapting dietary fat to the cat’s response.

Weight, stool consistency, and overall clinical response help the veterinarian assess whether the treatment plan is working. Many cats improve with enzyme replacement, dietary support, and monitoring, and can live a normal life, but management is generally ongoing.

Pancreatic enzyme treatment can cause oral bleeding. If you notice bleeding in your cat’s mouth, contact the veterinarian managing the treatment. Merck notes that reducing the enzyme amount can often resolve the problem, but any adjustment should be made with veterinary guidance.
Use only the product and amount prescribed for your cat, give it as instructed with food, and report side effects or persistent symptoms. Do not start an enzyme product based only on weight loss, diarrhea, or stool appearance.
