For most short-haired cats, start with a gentle rubber brush or grooming mitt. The ASPCA identifies rubber brushes as especially effective for lifting dead hair from short fur. If your cat dislikes grooming or has sensitive skin, a soft brush with silicone tips and soft nylon bristles is a gentler direction. Use a small slicker brush only when you actually need to work through a tangle, and handle sensitive areas with extra care.
The nine picks below are use-case recommendations, not a laboratory ranking. The available evidence covers brush types and two manufacturer-described tools; it does not establish that one model is best for every cat, nor that these products were independently tested. Current prices, stock and marketplace listings are not verified.

Quick comparison: which brush fits your cat?
Choose by the problem you need to solve rather than by the number of pins or the most aggressive-sounding claim. Short, sleek fur usually needs loose-hair removal. A tangle calls for a different tool and a slower technique. A cat that flinches, hides or swats needs the softest contact you can use effectively.

| Pick | Best use | Contact and purpose | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Rubber cat grooming brush | Everyday loose or dead hair on short fur | Flexible rubber surface; hair removal rather than detangling | ASPCA supports rubber brushes for dead hair on short-fur cats. No comparative test establishes a winning model. |
| 2. Rubber grooming mitt | Cats that tolerate a hand-like stroke better than a handled brush | Rubber contact; gentle sweeping over the coat | A mitt is a form of the rubber-brush category. Check the actual product for flexible, non-sharp contact points. |
| 3. FURminator Soft Brush | Short-haired cats sensitive to brushing | Silicone tips and soft nylon bristles, according to the maker | The manufacturer describes it for short-haired cats and sensitive pets; this is a product claim, not an independent test. |
| 4. Soft silicone side of the FURminator Soft Brush | A cat that prefers the most flexible feel | Silicone contact for a soft brushing pass | Use only the side and pressure your cat accepts; follow the maker’s direction-of-growth guidance. |
| 5. Soft nylon side of the FURminator Soft Brush | A second, still-soft pass when your cat accepts bristles | Soft nylon bristles for coat contact | The two-sided construction is described by the manufacturer. It is not evidence of superior shedding reduction. |
| 6. Small slicker brush | Small tangles or localized knots | Fine pins; detangling and loose-hair removal | Use conditionally. Pins can feel sharper than rubber or silicone, so work slowly and stop at resistance. |
| 7. FURminator Slicker Brush Small | A branded small slicker for cats when tangles are present | Pin brush intended for cats and all coat types, according to the maker | The maker says it handles loose hair and tangles and advises extra care around sensitive areas. |
| 8. Gentle rubber brush for a weekly starter routine | Owners establishing a predictable grooming habit | Rubber surface; short sessions focused on loose hair | PetMD cites weekly brushing as a groomer’s recommendation for short-haired cats; treat that as a starting point, not a rule for every cat. |
| 9. Detangling-first small slicker | A short-haired cat that develops an occasional mat or knot | Small pin area directed through the tangle, not vigorous whole-body brushing | Use the manufacturer’s direction-of-growth and sensitive-area precautions. A persistent or painful mat belongs with a veterinary professional or experienced groomer. |
Picks 3–5 describe different ways to use one two-sided soft-brush design, and picks 6–7 describe the generic and named versions of a small slicker. They are separated because the right choice depends on tolerance and the task, not because testing proved one variant faster or more effective.

How to choose a brush for short fur
Start with the coat condition
Look at the coat before opening the brush drawer. A sleek coat with scattered loose hair calls for a rubber or soft brush. A visible knot, clump or area that will not lie flat is a detangling problem and may justify a small slicker. Do not use a slicker simply because it has more pins: extra contact is unnecessary when there is no tangle to resolve.
Match contact to your cat’s tolerance
Some cats accept a flexible rubber surface but object to pins. Others prefer the light feel of soft bristles. Begin with the least intrusive tool that can address the problem. Watch for flattened ears, a whipping tail, skin twitching, attempts to leave or a sudden turn toward your hand. Those are signals to pause, reduce pressure or end the session, not to brush harder.
Consider the area you are brushing
Broad back and side areas are easier to brush than the belly, haunches, tail and ears. The maker of the small slicker specifically advises extra care around sensitive areas and brushing in the direction the coat grows. Even with a rubber or soft brush, use short strokes and avoid forcing the tool into folds or over irritated skin.

The nine picks in detail
1. Rubber cat grooming brush: the sensible first purchase
A rubber brush is the clearest starting point for a typical short-haired cat. The ASPCA’s grooming guidance says rubber brushes can be especially effective at removing dead hair from short fur. That makes this category appropriate for a cat whose main issue is loose coat around the home, rather than knots.
Look for a brush with flexible rubber contact points and a handle you can control without squeezing. Begin on the shoulders or back, make a few strokes in the direction the hair lies, and inspect your cat’s response. The category is supported; a particular shape, brand, pin pattern or shedding result is not established here.
2. Rubber grooming mitt: for cats that prefer a hand-like motion
A rubber mitt uses the same basic contact idea as a rubber brush but fits over your hand. It can be useful when a cat accepts petting yet resists a handled object. Treat it as a comfort-oriented format, not a proven performance upgrade. The relevant evidence supports the rubber-brush category for dead hair; it does not show that every mitt collects more hair or is safer than every brush.

Keep the motion light. A mitt can tempt you to press as though you were stroking, but pressure still matters over ribs, hips and thinly covered areas. Stop if the glove catches, pulls the skin or makes your cat tense.

The manufacturer describes the FURminator Soft Brush for short-haired cats and pets sensitive to brushing. It uses silicone tips and soft nylon bristles. That combination gives you a softer alternative when a pin brush is poorly tolerated.
Because the description comes from the maker, use it as a suitability claim rather than an independently verified ranking. Introduce the brush on a calm day, let your cat sniff it, and make the first session only a few strokes. Follow the product directions and keep pressure low around delicate areas.
4. Silicone side of the FURminator Soft Brush: the gentlest pass
If your cat accepts the soft brush but reacts to bristles, try its silicone side first. Silicone tips provide the flexible contact the manufacturer specifies, while the short session lets you test tolerance without committing to a full grooming routine. This is a use-case pick, not a separate product.
Brush with the coat’s natural direction and check the skin after a few strokes. If the silicone drags, the coat is damp or the cat’s skin is already sore, stop rather than increasing force. A soft surface cannot make brushing appropriate over an open wound or inflamed patch.
5. Soft nylon side of the FURminator Soft Brush: when bristles are acceptable
The same soft brush has a nylon-bristle side. Use it when your cat is comfortable with a light bristle feel and you want a second way to pass over short fur. Keep the distinction practical: choose silicone when flexibility is better tolerated, nylon when your cat calmly accepts the bristles.

There is no evidence here that one side removes a measured percentage more hair. Rotate only if your cat remains relaxed. A grooming session that ends calmly is more useful than a theoretically more thorough pass that creates fear.
6. Small slicker brush: a conditional detangling tool
A slicker brush has fine pins and is best reserved for a specific need: a small tangle or localized knot. It is not the default recommendation for every short-haired cat. Start at the outer edge of a knot, use tiny strokes in the direction of growth and release the hair a little at a time. Never yank a mat from the skin.
Pin brushes require more awareness of pressure than rubber tools. If the knot is tight, the skin moves with it, or your cat shows pain, stop. A professional can determine whether clipping or veterinary treatment is needed.

7. FURminator Slicker Brush Small: a named slicker option
The maker describes the FURminator Slicker Brush Small for cats and all coat types, including loose-hair removal and detangling. That makes it relevant when a short-haired cat has a genuine knot, not as an automatic upgrade from a rubber brush.
The same instructions call for brushing in the direction of coat growth and taking particular care around the belly, haunches, tail and ears. Keep those precautions with the tool every time. The manufacturer’s description establishes intended use; it does not establish comparative performance, comfort for every cat or a guaranteed result.
8. Gentle rubber brush for a weekly starter routine
For an owner who wants a simple schedule, pair a rubber brush with a short weekly session. PetMD’s “How to Brush a Cat” guidance cites a groomer’s weekly recommendation for short-haired cats. That is a reasonable starting point for observing how much loose hair your cat carries, but it is not a universal veterinary requirement.

Adjust from your cat’s response and coat. If the coat stays clean and your cat becomes annoyed, shorter or less frequent sessions may be sensible. If you see persistent mats, sudden coat changes or skin problems, brushing frequency is not the main issue; investigate the cause.

This pick describes a decision rule: reach for a small slicker only when a knot makes it necessary. Keep the working area small, support the hair near the skin and use brief strokes. Do not turn a single tangle into a whole-body pin-brushing session.
When the knot is close to the skin, widespread, wet, foul-smelling or painful, home brushing can worsen the problem. Ask a veterinarian or a qualified groomer for help instead of cutting blindly with scissors.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should you brush a short-haired cat?
There is no single interval that fits every short-haired cat. PetMD presents weekly brushing as a groomer’s recommendation, while VCA Animal Hospitals notes that short-haired cats may need less frequent brushing. Use weekly as an experiment: schedule a brief, calm session, then adjust to the coat and your cat’s tolerance.
Increase attention during periods when you see more loose hair, but do not respond to shedding by applying more pressure or using a harsher brush. The aim is comfortable removal of loose or dead hair and regular observation of the skin, not a guaranteed reduction percentage or hairball count; no such numerical result is established for these tools here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep-by-step: a low-stress brushing session
- Choose a calm moment. Brush when your cat is settled, not during play, eating or a confrontation. Put the selected brush within reach and have a reward ready.
- Let the cat investigate. Place the brush nearby for a moment. Touch the shoulder or back with your hand first, then make one gentle stroke with the tool.
- Follow coat growth. Use the direction recommended by the product instructions, especially with the small slicker. Keep strokes short and pressure light.
- Work broad areas first. Start with the back or sides, where you can see the skin and your cat’s reaction. Leave the belly, haunches, tail and ears for only if your cat remains relaxed.
- Pause often. After a few strokes, stop and offer praise or a reward. The RSPCA advises keeping sessions short while a cat becomes accustomed to grooming and using praise or a reward.
- Stop at resistance. If the brush snags, the skin pulls, or your cat shows distress, do not force the pass. Switch to a softer tool only if the coat condition allows; otherwise end the session.
- Inspect what you found. Look for mats, sore patches, wounds, parasites, swelling or a change in coat texture. Clean the brush according to its instructions before storing it.
Skin and coat checks are part of grooming
Brushing is an opportunity to notice a problem early, not a substitute for diagnosis. The ASPCA recommends examining the skin and coat during grooming. The RSPCA advises a veterinary check when the coat changes and calls attention to sore patches, wounds and mats.

A slicker’s pins deserve particular caution around the belly, haunches, tail and ears. Even a rubber brush should be used gently over thinly covered or tender areas.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using a slicker for every short-haired cat
Why it fails: pins add contact when the actual task is simply collecting loose hair. Correction: use rubber or a soft brush for a sleek coat and reserve the slicker for a visible tangle.
Brushing until the cat struggles
Why it fails: the cat learns that grooming predicts restraint and discomfort. Correction: end after a few calm strokes, reward cooperation and build duration gradually.
Ignoring a mat because the fur is “short”
Why it fails: short fur can still knot, and a tight mat may be painful. Correction: assess the skin, avoid force and get professional help when the mat is close, extensive or sore.
Treating a product description as a test result
Why it fails: manufacturer statements explain intended users and features, not independent comfort or performance comparisons. Correction: use the stated purpose to narrow your choice, then judge success by your cat’s relaxed response and the coat’s condition.
Which brush should you buy first?
For a typical short-haired cat with no mats, choose a gentle rubber brush or mitt. For a cat that is sensitive to brushing, begin with a soft silicone-and-nylon brush and use the side your cat accepts. Buy or use a small slicker only when detangling is a real requirement, and follow its direction-of-growth and sensitive-area precautions. That sequence addresses the common problem with the least aggressive contact while leaving a specialized tool available when the coat actually demands it.
