Michigan State University Extension says “Nothing is totally effective.” Its list is a set of plants squirrels may be less inclined to eat or disturb—not nine independently tested, squirrel-proof plants.
Plants squirrels may be less inclined to eat or disturb
Michigan State University Extension’s August 1, 2024, guidance names these plants and bulbs as less attractive to squirrels. It does not rank them or give a success rate, and the list should not be read as a guarantee.

- Hot peppers: Included among the plants squirrels may find less attractive.
- Garlic and onions: Both are named examples from the onion family.
- Garlic chives: Another named onion-family plant; the extension response cautions that it can be aggressive in a garden.
- Other alliums: The broader onion-family group is included too, so this overlaps with garlic, onions and garlic chives rather than representing a separate proven deterrent.
- Geraniums: Listed as a less-attractive planting choice.
- Lily of the valley: Listed by the extension response, which also warns it can be aggressive. Check whether it is suitable for your location before planting.
- Galanthus (snowdrops): These bulbs are included among the less-attractive choices.
- Hyacinths: Named as a bulb example.
- Daffodils: Also named as a bulb example.
The count of nine is an editorial grouping of examples in the extension list, not evidence that nine distinct plants were tested against squirrels. Garlic chives and other alliums overlap, and the guidance does not establish that any one choice reliably repels squirrels.

Why plant choice may not stop garden damage
Squirrels may eat plants, but they also dig to cache food. That means they can disturb a bed even when they are not interested in the plants growing there. Illinois Extension likewise cautions that there are no vegetables that are truly squirrel-proof.
#1 Best Overall
- PROVEN RESULTS – Tested and proven to stop squirrels and chipmunks from digging without using harmful chemicals and dangerous poisons.
- NATURAL INGREDIENTS & PET SAFE – Safe for people, pets, and the environment. Contains NO harmful chemicals or poisons, and has NO foul odors. While this repellent is safe for wild birds, it is NOT intended to keep squirrels off of bird feeders.
- STOPS DIGGING – Unlike liquid repellents, this granular formula is activated by the digging motion - giving squirrels a heavy dose of highly irritating botanical oils when it matters most
- PROTECTS BULBS & SEEDS – Stops squirrels from digging up newly planted bulbs and seeds. Used by professional landscapers to protect new bulb installations
- SAFE FOR PLANTS – Our long-lasting granular formula is tough on squirrels but gentle on plants. Safe to use around seedlings, flowers, and vegetables.
For newly planted seeds, bulbs, pots and exposed soil, a physical barrier addresses digging more directly than changing nearby plantings. An Ask Extension response dated June 18, 2026, notes that squirrels cache food and recommends metal barriers. Nebraska Extension also recommends wire mesh around plants and chicken wire over newly planted seeds or bulbs.
How the main squirrel-control options compare
| Option | May help with | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Less-attractive plant choices | Choosing ornamentals or bulbs that extension guidance says squirrels may avoid | No guarantee; the guidance does not establish them as proven repellents. |
| Metal mesh or hardware cloth | Protecting beds, containers, seeds and bulbs from digging | Fit it to the bed or pot so vulnerable soil is covered. Extension guidance favors metal mesh over plastic netting. |
| Taste repellents | Discouraging chewing on treated plants or seeds | Effect varies; follow the label, including directions for edible crops and reapplication. |
| Reducing attractants | Making an area less rewarding to squirrels | Food sources such as bird feeders may attract them; removing an attractant does not guarantee they will leave. |
Protect seeds, bulbs and pots with barriers
For a new planting that squirrels keep digging up, cover the target rather than expecting a nearby plant to deter them.

- PROTECTS FURNITURE & DECKING – Prevents costly damage to outdoor furniture, cushions, planters, decking, trashcans, and any other surface squirrels are chewing on.
- Use metal hardware cloth or garden wire mesh over vulnerable soil, or fit it around a bed or container.
- Nebraska Extension recommends 1/2-inch wire mesh around plants and chicken wire over newly planted seeds or bulbs.
- Secure the barrier so squirrels cannot simply move it aside, while leaving room for plants to grow where needed.
- Prefer metal mesh to plastic netting for this purpose, as recommended in the June 2026 Ask Extension response.
Use taste repellents cautiously
Repellents may discourage chewing, but their effect varies and they must be used according to the product label. Penn State cautions that its capsaicin product should be used on edible crops only when produce is not present; check the specific product’s label rather than assuming all repellents have the same directions.

- LIGHT WEIGHT TIGHT MESH:Fruit potted netting is made of 40 mesh ultra-dense nylon material, which is light weight, will not crushing the new branches growing on top of your fruit trees branch
- GREAT BAGS FOR COVERING PLANT: Bird netting for potted plant is sheer so the sun and rain come through but keeps, birds, rabbits, or squirrels away from your vegetables
- EASY TO PUT ON AND STRONG ENOUGH: To get insect netting over the tree, treat it like a long sock you're trying to put on a toddler, hold the open edges in your hands, and start bunching it up as you open it. Then put it over the tree
- PERFECT SIZE FOR MEDIUME BUSHES: Large enough size can well cover the larger plants in your garden, such as milkweed plants, dwarf dogwood, strawberries, tomatoes, blackberry, blueberries, cherries, pepper plants and flowers
- DRAWSTRING DESIGN: Drawstring on the bottom to safeguard any invaders. It not only covers the bush up well, keeps the squirrels from having their way with the berries, but also does a good job keeping insects out from under the mesh
What to expect from other deterrents
Nebraska Extension suggests considering food sources such as bird feeders when trying to make a yard less attractive. An Ask Extension responder’s June 2026 account says motion-activated sprinklers were less effective for squirrels than for deer; that is the responder’s experience, not a controlled comparison.
