Mark Rober’s follow-up squirrel maze turns a backyard into an obstacle course, with walnuts waiting at the end in a destination Hackster calls “Fort Knuts.” The video’s premise is playful engineering: squirrels must navigate a series of challenges rather than skip straight to the prize.
What is Mark Rober’s Backyard Squirrel Maze 2.0?
Hackster’s coverage identifies the follow-up as Backyard Squirrel Maze 2.0—The Walnut Heist. Rober’s original course was prompted by squirrels stealing birdseed; this later build redirects the challenge toward a walnut reward. The squirrels ultimately reach the prize in the video, a reported outcome rather than a controlled scientific test. The original video listing gives the birdseed premise, while Hackster’s follow-up coverage describes the later course.

How does the squirrel obstacle course work?
The backyard build is arranged as a sequence of rooms and obstacles. Hackster reports that the design includes deterrents intended to stop squirrels from bypassing sections, plus one-way exit doors in each room so an animal can leave and potentially return later. The final area, “Fort Knuts,” holds the walnuts.

The “laser” room uses sticks, not lasers
One obstacle resembles a laser-security effect, but the barriers are thin plastic sticks. When a squirrel pushes a stick into a metal contact at its base, the contact triggers a door-closing mechanism. Hackster says the door stays closed for one minute.

The reported electronics
Hackster names an Adafruit Feather 32u4 board, an RFM69HCW packet radio and a pneumatic solenoid in the trigger. That is a description of the mechanism in the coverage, not a complete parts list or a reproducible circuit. The article does not provide wiring, code, dimensions or a full build procedure.
Can you build the same maze at home?
The available description explains the concept and some of the electronics, but it is not a how-to guide. It does not establish construction details or provide an independent animal-welfare assessment. A backyard course also involves more space and fabrication than a simple classroom activity, so readers should not treat the video description as instructions for recreating the build.

What the video does—and does not—show
- It shows: a creator-designed backyard challenge with a walnut reward, passive obstacles and one electronically triggered door.
- It does not establish: a commercial maze kit, complete plans, a bill of materials, costs, or a tested safety protocol.
