Adult monarchs drink nectar from many flowers, but monarch caterpillars can eat only milkweed. A useful garden needs both: milkweed for breeding and nectar plants for adult butterflies. The nine plants below come from a Florida-specific Xerces Society guide; they are not a universal list for North America. Choose species suited to your location and site.
Why monarch gardens need milkweed and nectar plants
Milkweeds are the only plants monarch larvae can eat, making them essential for reproduction. Adults also feed on nectar from milkweed and other flowers. The Monarch Joint Venture planting FAQ recommends a variety of native milkweeds and nectar plants, with flowers available across the growing season.

Plant choice depends on where you live and the conditions in your garden. Xerces Society regional guides draw on monarch nectaring observations and caution that a plant on a list may not suit every site. Use the regional guide index or the Plants for Monarchs tool to find options for your location.
Nine plants in the Xerces Florida guide
This is a Florida example, not a recommendation for every state or region. Xerces selected plants with documented monarch visitation that bloom during monarch presence and are considered commercially available and hardy for Florida.

How to choose plants for your own garden
Start with your location and site
Choose plants native to your region and adapted to your conditions. Consider sun exposure and moisture before buying. Xerces’ Plants for Monarchs tool accepts a location, filters plants by attributes such as sun exposure, and can produce a supplier list. Its 2026 announcement describes these features.

- Pollinator Attraction: Milkweed flowers are known for attracting a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. They produce a sweet nectar that is particularly enticing to monarch butterflies, which lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed plants.

- Ecological Importance: Milkweed is crucial for the survival of monarch butterflies, providing not only nectar but also foliage for caterpillars to feed on. The presence of milkweed in an ecosystem supports biodiversity and is vital for the monarch's life cycle.
- Quality: All Milkweed seeds packaged by Seed Needs are intended for the current and the following growing seasons. All seeds are stored in a temperature controlled facility that is free of significant amounts of moisture.
- Quantity: Seed Needs offers generous quantities. You can share with friends and family, or you can save the extra seeds until the following season, if properly stored.
Cover both plant functions and the bloom season
Include milkweed for caterpillars and nectar plants for adult butterflies. Select species with overlapping or sequential bloom periods so flowers are available through the growing season rather than concentrated in one brief flush. Planting in clumps can make the garden easier for butterflies to find.
Choose seed or plugs
Seeds are often the more economical option, while plugs can establish and mature more quickly. Many milkweed species require cold treatment before germinating. The Monarch Joint Venture FAQ explains options for sowing directly or starting seeds indoors; check the needs of the particular species you choose.

Plant safely and avoid common mistakes
Ask about nursery insecticide treatments
Insecticides can harm monarchs and other pollinators. Ask the nursery whether plants have received systemic insecticide treatments, and avoid applying pesticides in or near monarch habitat.
Be cautious with tropical milkweed in Florida
The Florida Xerces guide recommends native plants even though monarchs may use some non-native species. Tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) can persist year-round in mild climates, potentially allowing winter breeding instead of diapause, and may be associated with higher levels of the parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. For Florida plantings, favor regionally appropriate native milkweeds and follow local guidance.
