A Large Black is a recognized British purebred pig breed. In the latest UK inventory, 284 breeding females were counted in 2025, down from 354 in 2021. The breed also appears on the UK’s Breeds at Risk list, a designation tied to preparedness for exotic disease outbreaks—not a global extinction ranking.
What is a Large Black pig?
Large Black is one of the pig breeds listed under the British Pig Association’s recognized breeding program on the UK government’s recognized societies and breeds register. The approved program’s stated territory is the United Kingdom, and its approval date is 1 January 1991. This establishes recognition in that register; it does not establish official recognition in every country.

The register is a useful starting point for breed and pedigree information. For an individual pig, verify its identity through current breed-society guidance and pedigree records rather than relying on color alone. The available evidence here does not establish a detailed current Large Black appearance standard, so claims about its exact coat, ear carriage, size, or conformation should be checked against the society’s current standard.
Are Large Black pigs rare?
In the UK, the latest inventory located counted 284 Large Black breeding females in 2025. That is 20% fewer than the 354 counted in 2021. The figures are census counts for the pig breeds covered by the inventory, not estimates derived from registrations; they describe UK numbers, not a worldwide population.
#1 Best Overall
| Year | UK Large Black breeding females counted |
|---|---|
| 2021 | 354 |
| 2022 | 307 |
| 2023 | 292 |
| 2024 | 288 |
| 2025 | 284 |
These year-by-year figures are from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs’ 2025 Farm Animal Genetic Resources statistical release. The steady decline shown across this period supports describing the breed as numerically limited and decreasing in the UK. It does not by itself establish its global status.
What does the UK Breeds at Risk listing mean?
Large Black is included on the UK Breeds at Risk list. It identifies native farm breeds considered particularly at risk in the event of an exotic disease outbreak, based on expert advice from the UK Genetics for Livestock and Equines Committee. For pigs, the eligibility criteria include a threshold of 1,500 registered breeding females.
Rank #2
This is a specific UK preparedness and conservation designation. It should not be read as a global extinction assessment or as a claim that the breed has disappeared. The 2025 census count and the list’s registration-based threshold are different kinds of measures.

How can you distinguish Large Black from other black pig breeds?
“Black pig” is not a sufficiently precise identification. White markings and their placement can help distinguish some breeds, but they do not establish the Large Black standard.

| Breed | What the cited breed resource describes | What this does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Berkshire | The Berkshire Pig Breeders Club standard describes black coloring with white on the face, feet, and tail tip, and erect or slightly forward-inclined ears (Berkshire breed standard). | These are Berkshire traits, not evidence of Large Black markings or ear carriage. |
| Hampshire | The University of Kentucky teaching resource describes a black pig with a white belt around the shoulders and front legs (University of Kentucky pig breeds resource). | The white shoulder belt is a Hampshire description, not a Large Black trait. |
| Large Black | A detailed current phenotype standard is not established by the cited material. | Consult the breed society’s current standard and pedigree records when precise identification matters. |
Do not transfer production claims from another black breed to Large Black. The sources cited here do not establish comparable Large Black figures for growth, litter size, feed efficiency, carcass yield, or meat quality.

Start with the British Pig Association, the recognized society named in the UK register, and ask about current standards, pedigree documentation, and how to locate breeders. The register confirms recognition, not present-day stock availability or a breeder-sales service. Before acquiring an animal, confirm directly with the breeder its registration and health records, and check the transport and other rules that apply to your location.
