The Bichon Frise is a small, cheerful companion dog with a big grooming commitment. Its friendly nature, modest exercise needs, and ability to adapt to apartment living make it appealing to many households. However, the breed is not maintenance-free: its curly coat mats easily, house-training may take patience, and its people-oriented temperament can make long periods alone difficult.

These breed measurements, colors, and recognition date are reported by the American Kennel Club.

What does a Bichon Frise look like?

The Bichon Frise is small but sturdy rather than delicate. It has a rounded head, dark round eyes, a black nose, and a plumed tail carried over its back. The coat is usually presented in the breed’s familiar rounded, cloud-like trim, although the underlying hair is curly and grows continuously.

Bichons are low-shedding compared with many breeds, but low shedding does not mean low grooming. Loose hairs can remain trapped in the dense undercoat instead of falling onto furniture. Without regular brushing, those hairs combine with moisture and friction to form mats close to the skin.

Is the Bichon Frise hypoallergenic?

No dog is completely hypoallergenic. “Hypoallergenic” is an imprecise marketing term, and people can react to individual Bichons. A Bichon may be a lower-shedding option for some allergy sufferers, but an allergic person should spend time with the specific dog before adopting or buying one, as advised by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

Bichon Frise temperament

Most Bichons are affectionate, playful, curious, and sociable. They tend to enjoy being involved in household activities and often form close attachments to their people. Their happy, engaging expression reflects a dog that generally prefers interaction over isolation.

They are commonly friendly with visitors and can get along well with children and other dogs when properly socialized. That friendliness also means a Bichon is usually an alert companion rather than a serious guard dog. It may announce a visitor, but it is unlikely to behave like a dedicated protection breed.

Young children should always be supervised with any dog. A small dog can be injured by rough handling, and even a patient dog may snap if frightened, cornered, or hurt. Teach children to leave the dog alone while it is eating, sleeping, or retreating to its bed.

Exercise and daily activity

Bichons can live successfully in apartments and other small homes, but they still need daily activity. A typical routine should combine physical exercise with play and short training sessions rather than relying on a single hurried bathroom break.

  • Daily walks, adjusted to the individual dog’s age and health.
  • Interactive play such as fetch, gentle tug, or food-puzzle games.
  • Short sessions practicing obedience cues or tricks.
  • Safe outdoor time on a leash or in a securely fenced area.

Do not assume an unfenced yard is adequate containment. Bichons can be quick and surprisingly difficult to catch if they run loose. Use secure doors, a properly fitted harness or collar, and reliable leash training. A microchip and current identification tag are sensible precautions for any dog.

Training a Bichon Frise

Bichons are intelligent and often learn commands and tricks quickly. They usually respond best to short, upbeat, reward-based training. Food rewards, praise, play, and repetition are more productive than harsh corrections, which can make a sensitive, people-oriented dog fearful or avoidant.

Begin socialization and basic training early. Gradually introduce the puppy to friendly people, calm dogs, household sounds, handling, grooming tools, car rides, and different surfaces. Puppy classes can provide useful structure, provided the class follows good vaccination and hygiene practices. The American Kennel Club likewise recommends early socialization and reward-based training.

House-training can take patience

Many Bichons learn tricks and obedience cues more readily than they learn reliable house manners. The solution is management and consistency, not punishment.

  1. Take the puppy outside after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and napping.
  2. Use the same toilet area and a consistent cue.
  3. Stay outside long enough for the puppy to finish, then reward immediately.
  4. Supervise closely indoors or use a safe confinement area when supervision is impossible.
  5. Clean accidents with an enzymatic cleaner so lingering odor does not encourage repeat marking.
  6. If accidents suddenly increase in an adult dog, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming the problem is disobedience.

Long absences can create additional difficulties. A Bichon left alone for much of the day may bark, whine, become destructive, or struggle with separation-related behavior. Build alone time gradually and arrange a dog walker, sitter, or daycare when the dog’s schedule requires more company than you can provide.

Bichon Frise grooming requirements

Grooming is the main practical commitment of this breed. A Bichon’s coat continues to grow and mats readily, particularly around the ears, collar, legs, armpits, and groin. The following routine reflects American Kennel Club guidance.

Task Typical approach Why it matters
Brushing At least two or three times weekly; daily is preferable for a longer coat Removes trapped hair and prevents mats
Bathing and clipping Approximately every four to six weeks for many pet Bichons Keeps the growing coat manageable and clean
Nail trimming Regularly, before nails become long or click constantly on hard floors Supports comfortable movement and paw health
Ear care Check routinely; clean only as directed by a veterinarian or groomer Floppy ears can contribute to ear-infection risk
Dental care Brush the teeth regularly with dog-safe toothpaste Helps reduce dental disease, gum infection, and premature tooth loss

Professional grooming is often worthwhile, especially if you want the traditional rounded trim or do not have experience working through a dense curly coat. Do not cut mats out with household scissors: the skin can be pulled up into the mat and cut accidentally. Severe matting may require veterinary or professional-grooming assistance.

Introduce brushing, paw handling, ear checks, nail tools, and the sound of clippers gradually while the dog is young. Pair each step with treats and stop before the dog becomes overwhelmed. Cooperative grooming is safer and easier than forcing a frightened dog through a long session.

Feeding and weight control

Feed a nutritionally complete diet appropriate for the dog’s life stage—puppy, adult, or senior—and provide fresh water at all times. A veterinarian can help select a diet when the dog has allergies, urinary concerns, dental problems, or another medical condition.

Some Bichons gain excess weight easily. Measure meals rather than estimating portions, account for training treats, and monitor body condition. You should be able to feel the ribs under a thin covering of fat without seeing prominent bones. Ask your veterinarian to assess weight during routine visits, particularly after neutering, reduced activity, or a change in diet. The American Kennel Club also notes that some Bichons are prone to becoming overweight.

Home-prepared diets should not be improvised from general human-food recipes. If you want to feed one, have it formulated and reviewed by a veterinarian with appropriate nutrition expertise.

Common Bichon Frise health concerns

The breed is generally considered healthy, but Bichons can develop medical problems. Conditions reported or recognized in the breed include, according to the American Kennel Club and VCA Animal Hospitals:

  • Allergies and allergic skin disease
  • Bladder and other urinary problems
  • Luxating patella, in which the kneecap slips out of position
  • Hip problems, including hip dysplasia
  • Cataracts and other eye disease
  • Dental disease, gum infection, and tooth loss
  • Ear infections
  • Diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, and bleeding disorders in some veterinary references

This list is not a diagnosis or a prediction that an individual Bichon will develop these conditions. Preventive veterinary care, dental maintenance, appropriate weight, and attention to changes in appetite, drinking, urination, movement, skin, eyes, or behavior are more useful than assuming every listed disease will occur.

Health testing when choosing a puppy

For Bichons used for breeding, the American Kennel Club’s current national breed-club recommendations include:

  1. Patella evaluation
  2. Hip evaluation
  3. Ophthalmologist evaluation

These are screening recommendations for breeding dogs, not a substitute for routine veterinary care in a pet. If you are buying a puppy, ask to see verifiable results for both parents. A breeder who offers only verbal assurances, avoids showing records, or will not discuss the parents’ health deserves careful scrutiny. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals CHIC Program provides information about health screening programs.

Is a Bichon Frise right for you?

A Bichon may be a strong match if you want a small, sociable companion and can provide regular attention, daily activity, reward-based training, and ongoing grooming. Its size and adaptability can work well for city living, provided the dog is not treated as a decorative accessory.

It is a poor fit if you want a dog that can be left alone most of the day, needs little coat care, or will tolerate neglected dental hygiene. Allow for professional grooming, routine veterinary care, dental supplies, training, food, parasite prevention, and possible medical treatment.

Questions to ask before bringing one home

  • Who will provide daily walks, play, training, and companionship?
  • Can the household budget cover regular grooming and veterinary care?
  • Will anyone be available for the puppy during the house-training period?
  • Can everyone in the home commit to gentle handling and consistent rules?
  • Have allergy-prone family members spent time with the particular dog?
  • Can the home prevent escapes through open doors, balconies, or an unsecured yard?

Answering these questions honestly is more useful than choosing the breed based solely on its small size or fluffy appearance.

FAQ

Do Bichon Frises shed?

They are low-shedding, but they are not shed-free. Loose hair can become trapped in the undercoat and form mats, so regular brushing is essential, as described by the American Kennel Club.

Are Bichon Frises good apartment dogs?

They can adapt well to apartment living if they receive daily walks, interactive play, mental stimulation, and adequate companionship. Their small size does not eliminate their need for activity or training.

How often does a Bichon Frise need grooming?

Brush the coat at least two or three times per week, with daily brushing preferable for a longer coat. Many pet Bichons need bathing and clipping approximately every four to six weeks, according to the American Kennel Club.

Are Bichon Frises easy to house-train?

They can be more difficult to house-train than to teach tricks or obedience behaviors. A consistent schedule, close supervision, frequent outdoor trips, and immediate rewards usually work better than punishment.

The Bottom Line

The Bichon Frise is an affectionate, trainable, adaptable companion—but not a low-maintenance one. Expect to budget time for frequent brushing, regular professional grooming, dental care, daily interaction, and patient house-training. For a household prepared to meet those needs, the breed can be a lively and loving long-term companion.
