Jane Goodall, the British primatologist whose decades of fieldwork transformed what people understand about chimpanzees and animal behavior, died of natural causes on October 1, 2025, at age 91. She died in California while on a U.S. speaking tour, according to the Jane Goodall Institute.

The institute did not disclose a more specific medical diagnosis. Goodall had been scheduled to speak to students and teachers in Pasadena. Organizers instead played a video message she had recorded before the event.

What happened to Jane Goodall?

The Jane Goodall Institute announced that Goodall died in California while traveling in the United States for speaking engagements. The organization identified the cause of death as natural causes but did not provide further medical details.

That distinction matters: there is no authoritative information establishing a heart attack, diabetes, an illness, or any other specific diagnosis. Reports that add one should not be treated as confirmed.

Goodall had been expected at a Pasadena event for students and teachers. Because she could no longer attend, the audience watched a message she had recorded in advance.

Why Jane Goodall mattered to animal science

Goodall began studying wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania, in 1960. The Jane Goodall Institute describes her work there as a 65-year study and one of the most influential long-term investigations of animal behavior.

At the time, many people viewed tool-making and other complex behaviors as uniquely human. Goodall documented chimpanzees making and using tools, including using modified sticks to obtain food. She also recorded hunting, meat-eating, intricate social relationships, conflict, cooperation and behaviors that showed the animals have complex emotional and social lives.

Chimpanzees are humans’ closest living relatives. They are not human ancestors, and describing them that way is scientifically incorrect. Goodall’s work instead helped show how much behavioral complexity humans share with other living apes.

From field researcher to conservation advocate

Goodall’s career extended well beyond her early observations at Gombe. She earned a Ph.D. in ethology from the University of Cambridge and became a prominent public advocate for wildlife conservation, animal welfare and environmental protection.

She founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977. The organization continues work involving chimpanzee research, habitat protection, conservation and community-centered programs.

In 1991, she founded Roots & Shoots, a youth program designed to involve young people in projects supporting animals, people and the environment. Her conservation message often connected threats to wildlife with practical choices communities could make to protect habitats and reduce harm.

Goodall was also recognized internationally as a humanitarian and was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1995 and promoted to Dame Commander in 2003.

Jane Goodall’s connection to animals

Goodall’s legacy is especially relevant to people who live with pets or care about animal welfare because she challenged the idea that animals are unthinking or purely instinctive. Her research did not suggest that chimpanzees and domestic animals behave identically. It did demonstrate that observing animals carefully—rather than assuming what they feel or understand—can reveal sophisticated communication, learning, relationships and individual personalities.

For pet owners, that principle is familiar. Dogs, cats and other companion animals have their own preferences, fears, social bonds and ways of communicating. Goodall helped bring a more attentive, less dismissive approach to the study and treatment of animals into the mainstream.

Family and legacy

Goodall was born in London on April 3, 1934. She is survived by her son, Hugo Eric Louis van Lawick, and three grandchildren.

Her scientific legacy remains rooted in Gombe, but her influence reaches far beyond chimpanzee research. She helped make animal behavior a subject that the public could understand and care about, while encouraging generations of students, researchers and advocates to treat animals as individuals rather than curiosities.

The Jane Goodall Institute’s announcement described her as its founder, a UN Messenger of Peace, and a renowned ethologist, conservationist and humanitarian. Her death closes the life of one of the most recognizable figures in modern wildlife science, but the research, conservation work and youth programs associated with her continue.
