On Monday, February 2, 2026, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow at 7:25 a.m. at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club announced his traditional forecast: six more weeks of winter.
The prediction is folklore rather than a scientific weather report. Phil is also not a typical household pet: he is part of a long-running public ceremony, with his handlers responsible for interpreting the event and managing his care.
What did Punxsutawney Phil predict in 2026?
Phil’s 2026 prediction was “More winter.” He appeared under a clear sky at Gobbler’s Knob, where the temperature was reported as −3°F. Because he saw a shadow, the traditional legend calls for six additional weeks of winter.
The official scroll read: “It is my job this February 2 to look to the skies and report back to you that there is a shadow here on my ground, six more weeks of winter abound!”

Thousands of spectators attended the pre-dawn ceremony at the site, which is about two miles outside Punxsutawney.
How does the Groundhog Day prediction work?
- Phil is brought out during the ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob.
- Members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle observe and interpret what happens.
- If Phil sees his shadow, the traditional forecast is six more weeks of winter.
- If he does not see a shadow, the tradition predicts an early spring.
- A handler reads the official forecast from a scroll.
Phil does not literally speak, choose a written forecast, or independently announce the result. The Inner Circle presents the prediction as part of the ceremony.
Is Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast scientifically accurate?
No. The shadow tradition has no scientific basis as a method of predicting the weather. Whether winter has lasted “six more weeks” also depends on how winter, spring, and average temperatures are defined.

NOAA’s comparison covering 2006 through 2025 gave Punxsutawney Phil an accuracy rate of 35%. That figure measures how the folklore compares with a chosen weather benchmark; it is not evidence that a groundhog can forecast seasonal conditions.

How old is Groundhog Day?
The Punxsutawney observance dates to 1887. The name “Punxsutawney Phil” was adopted in the 1960s, according to the Library of Congress.
The character is commonly described as one continuing Phil, but that should not be confused with one individual groundhog biologically living since 1887. “Phil” functions as a continuing title or persona promoted by the Groundhog Club. A captive groundhog’s normal lifespan is far shorter than that.

Is a groundhog a good pet?
Punxsutawney Phil’s popularity can make groundhogs look like unusual pets, but wild groundhogs are generally not suitable household companions. They are strong, active burrowing rodents with specialized needs, including space to dig, appropriate food, secure housing, and opportunities to behave naturally.
Groundhogs can also bite when frightened or restrained. Their behavior at a public ceremony should not be used as a guide for handling a wild animal. Never capture a groundhog for a photo, bring one indoors, or try to make a wild animal perform a prediction.
If a groundhog is injured, trapped in an unsafe place, or behaving unusually, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator or local animal-control agency. Keep dogs and cats away rather than attempting to handle the animal yourself.

What should pet owners do on Groundhog Day?
For dogs and cats, Groundhog Day is best treated as a normal day. A groundhog sighting in the yard is not a reason to let a pet chase or corner it. Use a leash outdoors, supervise pets near burrows, and give wildlife an escape route.
Groundhogs can damage gardens and lawns by digging and feeding on vegetation. Humane wildlife-control methods are preferable to poisoning or unapproved traps, especially where pets could come into contact with them. If a groundhog has made a den near a building, ask a local wildlife professional for advice about exclusion methods that do not trap an adult away from dependent young.
