To tie a fishing hook, pass your line through the hook eye and secure it with a knot suited to your line. The Palomar is the clearest widely applicable starting choice in the sources reviewed; the Uni and Improved Clinch are useful alternatives, with braid suitability for the Uni depending on the guidance you follow.

This guide shows how to tie a Palomar and Uni, explains when to consider an Improved Clinch, and helps you distinguish a hook knot from a line-to-line connection.

Choose a knot for your line

Knot Line guidance Best use and limitation
Palomar Braid, monofilament, and fluorocarbon A straightforward hook connection supported across the cited sources. The doubled line must fit through the eye, and the loop must pass over the hook.
Uni Monofilament and fluorocarbon; braid guidance varies A versatile terminal knot. West Marine describes it for braid, while Vermont Fish & Wildlife says it is not generally recommended for braid.
Improved Clinch Commonly used with monofilament and other suitable lines A familiar hook or lure connection identified by Utah and Pennsylvania wildlife and fishing agencies. This guide does not give a tying sequence because the retrieved source material does not verify complete steps.

A knot tied directly to a hook is different from a line-to-line knot. A Double Uni joins two lines; it does not replace the terminal knot that connects your leader to the hook.

How to tie a Palomar Knot

The Palomar is the most straightforward cross-line recommendation in the sources reviewed. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission demonstrates it for hook attachment and braided line; Vermont Fish & Wildlife and West Marine also list it for braid, monofilament, and fluorocarbon.

  1. Double the line. Fold roughly 6–10 inches of line back to form a loop. The exact starting length varies across the cited instructions.
  2. Pass the loop through the hook eye. Keep the doubled strands together. If they do not fit through the eye, choose another suitable knot.
  3. Tie a loose overhand knot. Use the doubled line and leave the hook hanging below. Do not tighten the knot yet.
  4. Pass the loop over the hook. Take the entire hook through the loop, then bring the loop above the eye.
  5. Moisten and tighten. Moisten the knot, then pull the standing line and tag end evenly to seat it against the eye.
  6. Trim the tag end. Check that the knot is seated before trimming the excess line.

The loop must pass completely over the hook. If the hook is too large for the loop or the doubled line will not pass through the eye, use a different knot rather than forcing it.

How to tie a Uni Knot

The Uni is a versatile terminal knot, but cited advice about using it with braid is not consistent. West Marine describes a braid application and suggests more wraps, while Vermont Fish & Wildlife does not generally recommend it for braid. For braid, the Palomar has clearer cross-source support here.

  1. Pass the line through the hook eye. Pull enough line through to work with the tag end.
  2. Form a loop. Bring the tag end back alongside the standing line to make a loop.
  3. Wrap inside the loop. Pass the tag around both lines inside the loop five to seven times, following West Marine’s instructions for this version.
  4. Moisten and tighten the wraps. Pull the tag end so the wraps draw together neatly.
  5. Slide the knot to the eye. Pull the standing line to snug the knot against the hook eye, then trim the tag.

West Marine suggests more wraps for braid, but this is not a consensus recommendation across the cited sources. Follow the guidance for your line and knot version, and inspect the connection before fishing.

When to use an Improved Clinch

The Improved Clinch is a common hook or lure connection. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources identifies it alongside the Uni and Palomar as a go-to knot, and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission lists it for connecting a hook or lure to line. The material reviewed for this guide does not verify a complete tying sequence, so consult a directly demonstrated guide before tying one.

Hook knot or line-to-line knot?

If your reel’s main line and leader are different lines, connect those two lines with a line-to-line knot, such as a Double Uni, as appropriate for your setup. Then tie the free end of the leader to the hook using a terminal knot such as a Palomar, Uni, or Improved Clinch. The Double Uni is for joining two lines, not for attaching a hook.

Check your connection

  1. Look at the knot. Make sure it is seated against the hook eye and the line is not visibly caught or pinched.
  2. Check the tag and standing line. Confirm the knot has not slipped and the line is still secure.
  3. Pull carefully. Apply a controlled pull while keeping the hook point directed away from your hands and face.
  4. Retie if uncertain. Cut off a knot that slips, is poorly formed, or leaves damaged line, then start again with fresh line.

Is a Double Uni Knot for tying a hook?

No. The Double Uni is a line-to-line knot for joining two lines. Tie a separate terminal knot between the leader and hook.

Is the Uni Knot suitable for braid?

Recommendations vary. West Marine describes using the Uni with braid and suggests more wraps, while Vermont Fish & Wildlife says it is not generally recommended for braided line. The Palomar has clearer support across the cited sources for braid-to-hook connections.

Is there one strongest fishing knot?

The reviewed sources do not establish a universal strongest knot or a verified comparative strength percentage. Choose based on the line, hook eye, and connection, and tie and check the knot carefully.
