Neither incoming nor outgoing water is universally best: fish may concentrate during either flood or ebb current, depending on the species and water depth. Check local tide and current predictions, then observe which conditions work at your spot.
High and low tide describe water-level turning points; incoming and outgoing describe current direction. Those terms are related, but a tide-height prediction alone does not tell you the current speed or when slack water will occur.
Key takeaways
- Tides are the rise and fall of sea level; tidal currents are horizontal water movement.
- Flood current moves toward shore and into bays and estuaries; ebb current moves outward toward the ocean.
- NOAA says fish may concentrate during either ebb or flood current, depending on species and water depth.
- High or low water does not necessarily coincide with peak current or slack water. Check current predictions separately where current matters.
- Predictions are a planning reference. Severe winds and unusual barometric pressure can make actual water levels differ from predicted levels.
- Keep local notes by spot, target species, water depth, and whether the tide is flooding or ebbing.
How do tides affect saltwater fishing?
Tides change sea level, while tidal currents move water horizontally. These changes can affect water depth at a fishing spot and the direction of flow. NOAA’s fishing-specific guidance is conditional: “Depending on the species and water depth in a particular area, fish may concentrate during ebb or flood tidal currents.” Read the NOAA National Ocean Service explanation of why tides are studied.
So rather than asking only whether it is high or low tide, consider the local water depth, whether current is flooding or ebbing, and how the target species uses that spot. The available evidence does not establish one best phase for all locations and species.

What is the difference between a tide and a tidal current?
A tide is the rise and fall of sea level. Tidal current is the horizontal movement of water associated with the tide. The difference between high and low water is the tidal range. NOAA notes that most tides are semidiurnal, with two highs and two lows each day, but diurnal and mixed patterns also occur. Learn more in NOAA’s overview of tides.
| Term | What it describes | What it tells an angler |
|---|---|---|
| High or low tide | A water-level turning point | Predicted water level and, together with the local spot, the depth available |
| Flood current | Water moving toward shore and into bays or estuaries | The direction of tidal flow |
| Ebb current | Water moving outward toward the ocean | The direction of tidal flow |
| Slack water | A period of little horizontal water movement | A predicted current condition, not a guarantee that fish stop feeding |
NOAA provides tide predictions and current predictions as distinct products. Its Tides and Currents FAQ explains that the relationship between high or low water and maximum current or slack water varies by location. A tide-height table alone may not answer when current will be strongest at a particular inlet or channel.
Is incoming or outgoing tide better for fishing?
Neither phase is universally better. NOAA says fish may concentrate during ebb or flood current depending on the species and water depth. Compare the local flow direction and strength, the depth at your spot, and your observations instead of assuming one phase will always produce fish.
| Phase | Current direction | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming, rising, or flood | Toward shore and into bays or estuaries | Whether the resulting water depth and flow suit the target species at the spot |
| Outgoing, falling, or ebb | Outward toward the ocean | Whether the resulting water depth and flow suit the target species at the spot |
| Slack water | Little horizontal movement | Whether fish remain available at the spot despite reduced current |
When an incoming tide may be worth fishing
An incoming tide brings flood current toward shore and into bays and estuaries. Whether that phase is productive depends on the species and water depth at the particular location. Note the water level and current conditions when you fish, and compare results with other visits to the same spot.

When an outgoing tide may be worth fishing
An outgoing tide brings ebb current outward toward the ocean. As with flood current, its value depends on the species and water depth in that area. Record the conditions and your results rather than treating an outgoing tide as a coast-wide rule.
Why can moving water matter to fishing?
Tidal currents provide a changing flow direction, and NOAA’s guidance says fish may concentrate during either ebb or flood current depending on species and water depth. This supports checking both phases at a local spot, not assuming that one direction is always better or that current guarantees a catch.
When fishing a place where current matters, note the direction and predicted timing alongside the water depth and target species. Over time, those observations can help you identify local patterns without mistaking a general rule for a reliable forecast.
Does slack tide mean the fish stop biting?
No. Slack water means little horizontal movement; it does not establish that fish everywhere stop feeding. Whether fish are present can still depend on the species, water depth, and local conditions.

How do I read a tide chart for fishing?
Use a tide prediction to plan around water level and a current prediction to plan around horizontal flow. Choose station information relevant to your fishing area, and confirm the date, local time convention, and units.
- Choose a nearby station. Look for the station closest to the fishing area, while recognizing that conditions can vary by location.
- Note high and low water. Record the predicted times and levels relevant to the spot.
- Check current predictions separately. Where current matters, note flood and ebb timing and slack water. Do not infer those times from high and low water alone.
- Compare local conditions. Record the tide phase, water depth, target species, and what you observe at the spot.
- Account for actual conditions. Predictions are not guarantees of observed water level. Severe winds and unusual barometric pressure can shift actual water levels from predictions.
NOAA also describes pocket tide tables as a format that can provide fishermen with information for local fishing and activities. A printed tide table can be convenient, but check whether it includes current predictions; a tide-height reference alone may not show current timing or speed. See NOAA’s guide to using a tide table.
How should you compare two possible tide windows?
There is no universal ranking of flood and ebb for fishing. Compare the conditions that matter at your location, especially current direction, water depth, and target species, then use your observations to assess the result.

Does moon phase affect saltwater fishing?
The reviewed sources do not establish that a particular moon phase makes one tide phase universally better for saltwater fishing. For a fishing decision, use local tide and current predictions and consider the conditions at your spot, including water depth and target species.
What conditions can make actual water levels differ from predictions?
Tide predictions are a planning reference, not a guarantee of observed water level. NOAA notes that severe winds and unusually high or low barometric pressure can cause actual water levels to differ from predictions. Check conditions as well as predictions when planning a trip. See NOAA’s information on online tide and tidal-current predictions.
How can you find your local best tide for saltwater fishing?
Build a local record instead of relying on a universal incoming- or outgoing-tide rule. The key comparison supported by NOAA’s guidance is how tide phase and water depth relate to the target species at a particular spot.
- Choose a fishing spot and target species.
- Look up predictions for the station closest to the area, and confirm the date, time convention, and units.
- Check current predictions too if current direction and timing matter at the spot.
- Record water depth, whether the tide is flooding or ebbing, and what you observe.
- Compare notes from visits to the same spot, taking care not to treat observations from different conditions as a universal rule.
What does the evidence say about catch rates?
The reviewed sources do not provide a universal catch-rate statistic or controlled comparison showing that incoming or outgoing tide is best across locations and species. NOAA’s fishing-specific guidance is conditional: “Depending on the species and water depth in a particular area, fish may concentrate during ebb or flood tidal currents.” The source is NOAA National Ocean Service, “Why do we study tides?”

The practical conclusion is to use local tide and current predictions to plan, then record what happens at your spot. The predictions can inform when and how water is expected to move; they do not guarantee a catch.
FAQ
What is the best tide to fish saltwater?
There is no universal best tide established by the reviewed sources. NOAA says fish may concentrate during ebb or flood current depending on species and water depth. Check local predictions and observe results at your spot.
Is incoming or outgoing tide better for saltwater fishing?
Either phase may matter. Incoming, or flood, current moves toward shore and into bays and estuaries; outgoing, or ebb, current moves outward toward the ocean. Which is useful depends on the species and water depth at the location.
Is fishing better at high tide or low tide?
High and low tide describe water-level turning points, not a universal fishing advantage. Consider the water depth at the spot and check current predictions separately if current timing matters.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do I need a tide chart or a current chart?
A tide prediction gives predicted water levels and high- and low-water timing; a current prediction provides information about flood, ebb, and slack. Use current predictions where the direction and timing of flow matter, and do not assume they match high and low water exactly.
Does slack tide mean fish stop biting?
No. Slack water means little horizontal movement; it does not prove that fish everywhere stop feeding. Whether fish are present depends on local conditions, including species and water depth.
The Bottom Line
The best tide for saltwater fishing is not the same everywhere. Compare local flood and ebb predictions, water depth, and the target species, then use observations from your own spot to build a pattern. High or low water does not automatically tell you when current peaks or slack water occurs.
