Yes, dogs can get pink eye, but redness alone cannot identify the cause. Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane lining the eyelids and covering part of the front of the eye. Infection, irritation, allergies, dry eye, eyelid abnormalities, and other eye conditions can cause similar signs, so a veterinary examination helps guide treatment.
Because some painful eye problems can look like conjunctivitis, do not treat a red eye with human drops or leftover medication without veterinary direction.
What does pink eye look like in a dog?
A healthy dog’s conjunctiva is usually pale pink and not especially noticeable. With conjunctivitis, it may become red, swollen, or irritated. Signs can affect one eye or both and may include:
- Redness of the eye or tissues around it
- Swollen conjunctiva or eyelids
- Watery, cloudy, yellow, or greenish discharge
- Frequent blinking, squinting, or holding the eye partly or completely closed
- Rubbing the eye or face
- Mild eye discomfort
- Sometimes sneezing, coughing, or nasal discharge
Discharge color does not reliably identify the cause. Discharge and redness can occur with infection, irritation, dry eye, or another underlying eye problem.

Is it conjunctivitis—or something more serious?
Conjunctivitis describes inflammation; it is not a diagnosis of the underlying cause. Other conditions can cause or resemble it, including:
- Corneal ulcer or injury: Damage to the clear surface of the eye can cause pain, squinting, tearing, and cloudiness.
- Glaucoma: Increased pressure inside the eye may cause redness, pain, cloudiness, or sudden bulging and can threaten vision.
- Inflammation inside the eye: Conditions such as uveitis may cause redness, pain, cloudiness, and light sensitivity.
- Foreign material or irritation: Debris, smoke, or other environmental pollutants can irritate the eye.
- Trauma: An injury may initially look like simple irritation.
- Dry eye: Inadequate tear production can cause redness and irritation and may damage the cornea if untreated.
These problems may need different treatments. Medication that helped a previous episode may be ineffective or harmful for a new one.
What causes pink eye in dogs?
Possible causes include:
- Bacterial or viral infection
- Allergies or immune-mediated disease
- Smoke, environmental pollutants, or other irritants
- Foreign material in the eye
- Trauma
- Dry eye or other tear-film problems
- Blocked or inflamed tear ducts
- Eyelid or eyelash abnormalities
- Tumors or other eye disease
Eyelid and eyelash anatomy can be important when redness keeps returning. Entropion, ectropion, or abnormal lashes can irritate the eye and may require veterinary treatment, including surgical correction in some cases.
Can dogs spread pink eye to other dogs?
Sometimes, but not always. Pink eye describes inflammation, and the likelihood of transmission depends on its cause. Some bacterial and viral infections can spread, while allergies, dry eye, trauma, eyelid anatomy, and irritation are not contagious in the usual sense.

Until a veterinarian has assessed the problem:
- Wash your hands after touching the affected eye or cleaning discharge.
- Do not share towels, cloths, eye-drop bottles, or other eye-care materials between pets.
- Ask your veterinarian whether your dog should avoid close contact with other animals.
When should a dog with a red eye see a veterinarian?
Arrange prompt veterinary care for a red or discharging eye, especially if your dog seems uncomfortable. Redness can have several causes, and an examination helps distinguish conjunctivitis from other eye problems.
Rank #2
- EYE AREA RINSE: Saline dog eye wash helps flush away dust, pollen, and everyday debris that collects in corners of the eyes. Use for routine grooming to keep the eye area clean for dogs and puppies in homes, yards, or walks.
- TEAR STAIN CLEANUP: Gentle formula helps soften tear residue and loosen buildup on fur around the eyes to support cleaner-looking tear stain areas. Apply with a cotton pad or soft cloth, wiping outward to avoid pushing debris inward.
- SALINE-BASED FORMULA: Made with a mild saline solution designed for sensitive eye areas. The liquid rinse helps remove light discharge and grime without harsh detergents, supporting regular eye hygiene for breeds prone to watery eyes.
- 98% NATURAL ORIGIN: Formulated with 98% natural origin ingredients and made without sulfates, parabens, phthalates, added colorants, or harsh chemicals. Simple, compliance-safe eye care designed for routine use in pet grooming kits.
- EASY DAILY ROUTINE: Use at home after walks, grooming, or dusty play. Apply a small amount to a clean pad, wipe the eye area, and repeat with a fresh pad for the second eye. Stop use if irritation appears and consult a vet.
Seek urgent veterinary advice for:
- Colored eye drainage
- Marked redness or swelling of the eye or eyelids
- Squinting, repeated blinking, or holding the eye closed
- A cloudy eye
- Sudden bulging or a change in the eye’s appearance
- Visible cuts, eyelid damage, or other injury
If the eyeball is out of its socket or has suffered severe trauma, go to an emergency veterinary hospital. Avoid manipulating or pushing the eye back into place.
How a veterinarian diagnoses conjunctivitis
A veterinarian will assess whether conjunctivitis is the primary problem or a sign of another condition. The examination may include the eyelids, eyelashes, conjunctiva, tear ducts, third eyelid, and cornea. Depending on the findings, tests may include:
- Schirmer tear test: Measures tear production and can help identify dry eye.
- Fluorescein stain: Can reveal a corneal injury.
- Intraocular-pressure measurement: Helps assess pressure inside the eye.
- Culture and sensitivity testing: May be used in selected cases.
- Other tests: Additional procedures may be considered based on the examination and history.
How is pink eye treated in dogs?
Treatment depends on the underlying cause, not simply on redness.
- In some bacterial cases: A veterinarian may prescribe antibiotic drops or ointment. Antibiotics are not a universal remedy and will not correct allergies, dry eye, a foreign body, or an eyelid problem.
- Viral or other infectious disease: Care may involve veterinary-directed medication, hygiene, monitoring, and management of related illness.
- Allergies or irritation: Avoiding the trigger and following veterinary treatment advice may help.
- Dry eye: Treatment may include lubricants and prescription medication to stimulate tear production. Artificial tears may be part of care after dry eye is diagnosed.
- Eyelid or eyelash abnormalities: Corrective surgery may be needed when anatomy repeatedly irritates the eye.
- Other eye disease or trauma: These problems may require cause-specific treatment and follow-up.
Some cases resolve with appropriate treatment, while dry eye, immune-mediated disease, and eyelid abnormalities may require ongoing care. The outlook depends on the cause and how the eye responds to treatment.
What can you safely do at home while arranging care?
Home care should be limited to protecting and gently cleaning the area, not trying to diagnose or cure the problem. If the eye has been exposed to a chemical or debris, contact a veterinarian promptly for advice on flushing and next steps. Bring the product container or its name if there was a chemical exposure.

Do not try to remove an embedded object, scrape the eye, or bandage it. If your dog is rubbing the eye, an Elizabethan collar can help prevent additional trauma while you seek care.
A veterinary-recommended eye rinse may help remove loose debris or clean discharge around the eye, but it is supportive cleansing—not a cure for infection, dry eye, an ulcer, glaucoma, or another underlying condition. Seek veterinary guidance, particularly if the eye is painful, cloudy, or severely red.
After a veterinarian has ruled out disease and advised routine cleaning, a clean, warm, wet cloth can gently soften discharge on the surrounding fur. Use a clean section for each eye. Avoid hydrogen peroxide and household cleaning products around the eyes.
What not to put in a dog’s eye
Do not use any of the following unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to:
- Human redness-relief drops
- Leftover prescription eye drops or ointment
- Another pet’s medication
- Antibiotics chosen without an examination
- Steroid-containing eye products
- Hydrogen peroxide or household cleaning products
Steroids can be risky if a corneal ulcer or certain infections are present. Even a medication prescribed for a previous episode may be wrong for the current problem.

One eye versus both eyes: what the pattern may mean
One affected eye may be associated with a foreign object, tear-sac inflammation, or dry eye. Both eyes are commonly affected with viral or bacterial disease, but allergies and environmental irritants can also affect one or both eyes.
This pattern is only a clue, not a diagnosis. A dog with one red eye can still have a serious problem, and two red eyes do not necessarily mean a contagious infection.
FAQ
Will dog pink eye go away on its own?
Some mild irritation may improve after its trigger is removed, but do not assume that a red eye is harmless. Conjunctivitis can be related to dry eye, an injury, infection, or another eye condition. Contact a veterinarian if the eye is painful, discharging, cloudy, swollen, or not improving.
Can I use human eye drops for my dog?
Do not use human redness-relief drops or other human eye medication unless your veterinarian specifically tells you to. Some products are inappropriate for dogs, and steroid-containing products can be dangerous when an ulcer or certain infections are present.
Is green discharge from a dog’s eye always an infection?
No. Green or yellow discharge can occur with infection, but discharge can also accompany dry eye, irritation, or another eye disorder. Its appearance alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

How long does conjunctivitis last in dogs?
Duration depends on the cause and treatment. Some cases improve with appropriate care, while dry eye, immune-mediated disease, or eyelid abnormalities can require ongoing care. A veterinarian should reassess symptoms that persist or return.
Should I isolate my dog if it has pink eye?
Not every case is contagious. Because some bacterial and viral causes can spread, practice hand hygiene, avoid sharing eye-care materials, and ask your veterinarian whether temporary separation from other pets is appropriate.
The bottom line
Dogs can get pink eye, but a red eye is not a diagnosis. Seek veterinary advice for a red or discharging eye, and urgent care for pain, squinting, cloudiness, marked swelling, sudden bulging, or visible injury. An eye out of its socket or severe trauma requires emergency-hospital care. Do not use human redness-relief drops, leftover medication, or steroid eye products without veterinary direction.
This article provides general information and cannot diagnose or treat your dog’s eye problem. A veterinarian should assess a painful, persistent, recurrent, or visibly abnormal eye.
