Mommy, an estimated 97-year-old Western Santa Cruz Galápagos tortoise at Philadelphia Zoo, became a first-time mother when her eggs hatched in 2025. Early news reports counted four hatchlings; a later, detailed account from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) says seven hatched from her November 2024 clutch. The pairing with Abrazzo was part of managed-population breeding work intended to add Mommy’s underrepresented genetics.
Mommy laid eggs that hatched
“Became a mother” is a common way to describe the story, but tortoises do not give live birth: Mommy laid eggs after breeding with Abrazzo. The AZA account says she laid 16 eggs in November 2024. Nine showed signs of development, two stopped developing during incubation, and seven hatched.
News coverage initially reported four hatchlings. KYW Newsradio reported four on April 3, 2025, and Mongabay reported four on April 11. The AZA account later described seven hatchlings and says the hatchlings made their public debut on April 23. These are reports from different points in the story; the sources reviewed do not explicitly explain why the early total was lower.
A nearly century-long wait for motherhood
Mommy has been at Philadelphia Zoo since 1932. Her exact birth date is not documented, so her age is an estimate rather than a verified calculation. Reports described her as about 97 when the hatchlings emerged.

Abrazzo was moved to Philadelphia in 2020 under an AZA breeding and transfer plan. The pair was selected in part because Mommy’s genetic contribution was not represented in the managed population.
What record did Mommy set?
The carefully qualified claim is that Mommy was described as the oldest known first-time mother of her species in human care. Her age is estimated, and the claim should not be expanded into a verified worldwide record for every Galápagos tortoise or reptile.
Age alone does not establish why a tortoise reproduces. In this case, the documented story is also about planned breeding and the effort to represent more genetic diversity in a managed population.
Which tortoise species are the hatchlings?
Mommy is a Western Santa Cruz Galápagos tortoise, identified in the AZA account as Chelonoidis porteri. The hatchlings are offspring of Mommy and Abrazzo, a male of the same population.
“Galápagos tortoise” refers to giant tortoises from different island and regional populations. The Western Santa Cruz population is the one involved in this Philadelphia Zoo breeding story.

Why the hatchlings matter beyond the headline
The breeding was part of coordinated work for the AZA-managed population. According to the AZA account, Mommy’s genetics had not previously been represented in that population, making her offspring a potential contribution to its genetic diversity.
These hatchlings are not automatically candidates for release into the wild. Their future management depends on the coordinated population program and decisions by relevant species-management and conservation authorities.
The species is critically endangered
The 2025 reports describe Western Santa Cruz Galápagos tortoises as critically endangered. Mongabay reported that 3,400 remained and that 44 were in U.S. zoos at the time of its 2025 story. Those are dated reported figures, not current 2026 totals.

How the zoo incubated the eggs
The AZA account describes Philadelphia Zoo’s specialist incubation approach: eggs intended to produce females were incubated at 29°C and those intended to produce males at 27°C. It reports that female hatchlings began to emerge after 112 days and males after 155 days. These are details of a professional zoo program, not instructions for keeping or breeding tortoises at home.

What Mommy’s story teaches us about conservation breeding
Mommy’s story is remarkable both because she reproduced at an estimated age of about 97 and because the planned pairing added a previously unrepresented genetic contribution to the AZA-managed population.
Careful population management can support genetic diversity, but captive breeding alone cannot protect wild populations. Conservation also depends on work in the species’ native habitat and on decisions made by the organizations responsible for the animals and their recovery.
