Pointer breeds are active hunting dogs bred to locate game birds and indicate their position; many also retrieve. The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes 14 pointing breeds in its Sporting Group, but their activity, training, size, and coat needs vary. They may suit households seeking an active companion, but no breed description guarantees an individual dog’s temperament or family fit.

This guide compares the 14 AKC-recognized breeds to help you assess your household’s schedule, experience, and ability to provide daily engagement and safe outdoor activity. Meet adult dogs and ask responsible breeders or rescues about an individual dog’s temperament and energy before deciding.

Quick comparison: the 14 pointing breeds

This comparison is a starting point, not a prediction for every dog. AKC’s list is specific to its Sporting Group and may differ from classifications used by other kennel organizations.

Breed Activity and work profile Coat consideration Household consideration
Bracco Italiano Thrives with field work and activity Short coat Calm at home; friendly with family and other dogs
Brittany Stamina, scent work, and plenty of exercise Feathering Agile, fun-loving, and willing to please
English Setter Sporting dog and playful companion Speckled “belton” coat with feathering Sweet-tempered and friendly with people and dogs
German Shorthaired Pointer Vigorous exercise and positive training Short coat Needs to stay busy
German Wirehaired Pointer Meaningful work and dog sports Wiry, water-repellent coat Devoted and energetic
Gordon Setter Energetic and eager to run Longer feathered coat Largest setter in AKC’s description; affectionate and devoted at home
Irish Red and White Setter Strong work ethic and stamina Feathered coat High-spirited, playful, and loyal to family
Irish Setter Active hunting dog Flowing red coat Playful, affectionate, mischievous, and independent
Pointer Finds, points, and retrieves game birds Short coat Can participate in hunt tests, field trials, and scent work
Spinone Italiano Needs exercise and activity Thick, wiry coat Loyal and strongly attached to people
Vizsla Daily exercise, retrieving, or field activity Short coat Affectionate, gentle, and enthusiastic
Weimaraner Exercise and mental stimulation Short coat Affectionate; formerly known as the Weimar Pointer
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Points on land and retrieves in water Low-shedding, harsh coat Friendly, devoted, intelligent, and affectionate with family
Wirehaired Vizsla Work in field, forest, or water Wiry coat suited to rough conditions Calm, gentle, loyal, and eager to please

AKC describes pointing dogs as both independent thinkers and team players. Their capacity to be affectionate companions at home does not remove their need for activity, training, and engagement.

2. Brittany

The Brittany is a medium-sized French bird dog valued for stamina and scent work. AKC describes it as agile, fun-loving, and willing to please, with a need for plenty of exercise or hunting outings.

How to choose among them

Match the dog to your real routine

Compare your daily schedule, experience, and outdoor opportunities with a dog’s activity and training needs. AKC notes that pointing dogs may range well away from handlers while responding to commands, so consider how you will build skills and manage outdoor exploration.

  1. Assess your daily engagement: Decide how much time your household can realistically devote to activity, training, and companionship.
  2. Consider size and strength: Think about whether family members can safely manage a strong, athletic dog.
  3. Plan for training: Account for the work needed to teach skills and manage independence around distractions.
  4. Check coat expectations: Ask about grooming and shedding for the particular breed and individual dog.
  5. Meet individual dogs: Ask responsible breeders or rescues about temperament, energy, and the dog’s history.

There is no single best pointer breed for every active family. Compare the individual dogs’ needs and the work involved rather than treating breed descriptions as guarantees.

Think beyond coat type

Coat texture and shedding vary across the group. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is described by AKC as low-shedding, while setters such as the English Setter and Irish Setter have more prominent coats. Ask knowledgeable breeders or rescues what care an individual dog’s coat requires; do not assume that any coat guarantees an allergy-friendly fit.

Activities and training

Pointing dogs are bred to work with people, but they can also range away from handlers. Training and safe management matter alongside physical activity.

Useful outlets

  • Scent work: Ask whether structured scent activities are a suitable way to engage a dog’s working instincts.
  • Retrieving: Many pointing dogs retrieve; choose activities appropriate to the individual dog and its training.
  • Dog sports: AKC describes the German Wirehaired Pointer as fond of dog sports, and several breeds have a history of field work.
  • Field activities: Hunt tests and field trials are potential outlets for a Pointer, according to AKC.
  • Positive training: AKC’s GSP profile highlights positive training. Consider a qualified trainer familiar with sporting dogs.

Recall practice and outdoor management

Pointing dogs may range away from their handlers, and wildlife or scents can distract them. AKC describes responsiveness to commands as part of their work, but no training aid alone makes off-leash activity safe.

A long-line leash for recall practice can be one option for supervised training; it is an editorial suggestion, not an AKC endorsement of a product. Build skills in an appropriate setting, manage the line carefully, and follow local rules. Do not let a dog approach people or animals without control and consent.

Children and family safety

No breed description guarantees that an individual dog will be safe or patient with children. The United Kennel Club’s English Pointer standard describes the Pointer as particularly good with children, but that statement applies to the breed standard, not every dog.

Consider a dog’s individual temperament, training, socialization, health, and the household’s ability to supervise interactions. Ask a responsible breeder or rescue direct questions about the dog’s behavior and suitability for your family.

Hunting is their working background, but some breeds also participate in dog sports, scent work, hunt tests, or field trials. Ask a qualified breed organization or trainer how to provide suitable outlets for the individual dog.

Are pointing dogs easy to train?

Training needs differ. AKC describes pointing dogs as both independent thinkers and team players, and its GSP profile emphasizes positive training. Ask about a breed and individual dog’s characteristics, and consider a trainer experienced with sporting dogs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are any pointing breeds low-shedding?

AKC describes the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon as low-shedding. That does not mean no shedding or guarantee that the breed will suit someone with allergies; spend time with dogs and seek appropriate advice before choosing.

The bottom line

Choose a pointing breed by matching its work, activity, training, size, and coat needs to your real household routine. The AKC’s 14 breeds offer varied characteristics, but no description can predict every individual dog; meet dogs and ask responsible breeders or rescues about temperament and energy before deciding.
