To reduce fire ants across a yard, apply fresh granular bait as directed on its label, then give it time to work and selectively treat any remaining nuisance mounds with a site-labeled product. Bait is not instant, and no single treatment guarantees permanent control: colonies can return from surrounding land, so inspect and repeat treatment only as the label and local extension guidance allow.
A targeted mound treatment can address an urgent, visible colony, while broadcast bait reaches small or inconspicuous colonies you may miss. Keep people and pets away from active mounds and follow the product label for every application.

First, decide how extensive the problem is
Do not disturb a mound just to identify it. Fire ants may swarm when a nest is disturbed, increasing the risk of painful stings to people and pets. Look for ants around mounds, sidewalks, play areas, garden borders, utility boxes, and other places where your dog or cat regularly walks.
| What you are seeing | Best starting point | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Many mounds spread through a lawn | Broadcast granular bait, then monitor and selectively treat nuisance mounds | Bait works slowly and may need to be repeated as permitted if ants return |
| A few mounds in a small yard | Individual, label-approved mound treatment | Treating visible mounds may miss smaller colonies |
| One mound beside a path or pet area | A mound treatment labeled for that site | Follow the product directions and keep people and pets away as instructed |
| Fire ants are entering the house | Use only an indoor-labeled product in that setting or seek professional assessment | Outdoor fire-ant products are not automatically suitable or permitted indoors |
| Pets, children, or livestock use the area | Choose only a product labeled for the exact site and pest | Follow label directions for application and reentry |
Visible mounds are not the whole population. Broadcast bait can reach small colonies that are easy to overlook, while treating only obvious mounds may leave those colonies to grow. The University of Florida IFAS describes a two-step approach as broadcast bait followed by treatment of nuisance mounds.

Choose a treatment that fits the problem
| Method | Best use | Speed and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Broadcast granular bait | Preventive, yard-wide suppression, including small colonies | Slow; Mississippi State University Extension says visible benefits can take two to eight weeks, depending on bait |
| Individual mound treatment | Selected nuisance mounds, especially in high-traffic areas | Targets visible colonies but may not reach every colony in a yard |
| Broadcast contact insecticide | An area treatment where a labeled product and site call for it | Not bait: ants that contact it are killed, but they do not carry it back as food |
Compare methods by speed, area covered, selectivity, labor, and whether the product label permits use at your site. A bait and a contact insecticide are not interchangeable.
A practical sequence for many mounds
- Identify the problem area and urgency. Keep people and pets away from active mounds while choosing a product labeled for the intended site. Do not disturb mounds unnecessarily.
- For yard-wide suppression, apply bait as directed. Use fresh bait and follow the label’s application rate and weather restrictions. Foragers must collect bait and carry it back to the colony, so a quick-killing contact product is not a substitute.
- Give the bait time to work. Mississippi State University Extension says visible benefits can take two to eight weeks, depending on the bait. Do not promise immediate results or reapply early without checking the label.
- Treat remaining urgent mounds selectively. Use a mound treatment labeled for the site and follow its directions. Follow label and extension guidance on when to use a contact treatment so foragers have time to collect bait.
- Recheck and maintain. New colonies may arrive from surrounding land or establish after queen flights. Repeat treatment only as permitted by the current label and local guidance.
Apply bait carefully
Choose a product whose current label specifically permits use against fire ants on your intended site. A product marketed for ants is not automatically suitable for fire ants, lawns, gardens, pet areas, or indoor use.
Use fresh bait and follow its application rate and weather restrictions. Mississippi State University Extension describes a small hand-powered spreader as useful for home lawns and cautions that a fertilizer spreader can apply too much bait. The extension page gives general rates around one to two pounds per acre—less than half an ounce per 1,000 square feet—but these are not universal doses: the selected product’s current label controls.
Do not mix bait with fertilizer, seed, or another pesticide unless the product directions permit it. Bait must be carried back by foragers, so do not substitute a broadcast contact product and expect the same result.

How quickly will fire-ant bait work?
Bait is intentionally slow acting. Mississippi State University Extension says the visible benefit can take two to eight weeks, depending on the bait. Results vary with the product, foraging, weather, and application. Check the selected product’s label for directions and timing, and do not reapply just because you cannot see immediate results.
A targeted mound product may act sooner, but its directions and performance depend on the label and application. Follow its instructions rather than relying on a general timing claim.
When individual mound treatment is better
Individual treatment can make sense when a particular visible mound poses an immediate danger or when you want to focus on a nuisance colony. It may not reach small or inconspicuous colonies elsewhere in the yard, and new colonies can move in from untreated neighboring property.
For an urgent mound beside a pet run or walkway, keep the area closed, remove the pet, and apply only a product labeled for that location. Reopen the area only when and as the label permits.
Can boiling water kill fire ants?
Hot water and other nonchemical methods may have limitations and safety risks, and the supplied research does not establish hot water as a universal rapid solution. Do not rely on a viral home remedy as a colony-control plan: UF/IFAS says many popular remedies and devices have not been scientifically proven to reduce fire-ant populations. Disturbance can relocate a colony without killing its queen.

How to keep fire ants from coming back
You cannot reliably block every new colony from entering a residential property. New queens and colonies from untreated surrounding areas can recolonize a treated yard, so plan to inspect and repeat treatment as appropriate under the product label and local extension guidance.
Inspect for new activity
Check the lawn, pet areas, garden edges, sidewalks, driveway borders, and utility boxes. Give special attention to locations where pets stand, eat, sleep, or play. Do not disturb mounds unnecessarily.

Follow the selected product’s current label and local extension guidance. Do not create a treatment schedule by combining directions from different products.
Treat new nuisance mounds selectively
A new mound beside a path or dog run can be addressed with a product labeled for that site. Selective treatment of a nuisance mound does not prevent ants from entering from untreated land.
Preserve competing ants where practical
UF/IFAS identifies preserving native and other nonproblem ant species that compete for food and nesting sites as part of sustainable fire-ant control. Avoid relying on unproven remedies or indiscriminate treatment when a more selective, label-approved approach fits the problem.

Fire-ant treatment safety for dogs, cats, and families
Product registrations, active ingredients, allowed sites, rates, waiting intervals, and protective equipment vary. The current pesticide label controls product-specific directions. Follow its instructions for the permitted pest and site, application, protective measures, storage, and reentry.
- Keep pets, children, livestock, food, and animal feed away from pesticide products.
- Do not allow pets or livestock to consume bait.
- Store products in their original containers, tightly closed and out of reach.
- Never transfer pesticide into a food or drink container.
- Do not apply a product to a lawn, garden, kennel area, or indoor space unless that use appears on the label.
- Follow the label’s reentry instructions; do not assume a treated area is ready for use without checking.
If a pet may have eaten bait or contacted a pesticide, remove the animal from the area and contact a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly. Keep the product container or a photograph of its label available.
What not to do
- Do not expect a permanent cure. New colonies can recolonize a treated yard.
- Do not assume every ant bait works on fire ants. Choose a product labeled for fire ants and the intended site.
- Do not confuse bait with a broadcast contact insecticide. Contact products kill ants that encounter them; they are not carried back as food.
- Do not rely on viral home remedies. UF/IFAS says many popular remedies and devices have not been scientifically proven to reduce fire-ant populations.
- Do not disturb a mound unnecessarily. Disturbance can cause ants to swarm or relocate without killing the queen.
- Do not apply a product contrary to its weather, rate, or reentry directions.
- Do not use a lawn fire-ant product indoors. Indoor legality and directions are separate label questions.
When to call a professional
Consider a licensed pest-control service if mounds are widespread, colonies repeatedly return despite correct label-based treatment, ants are entering the house, someone in the household has a serious sting allergy, or you cannot keep pets and children away during treatment. Ask which product and active ingredient will be used, where it is labeled for application, what the reentry interval is, and how pets should be protected.
Professional treatment is not a guarantee that fire ants will never return. New colonies may recolonize the yard, so inspection and label-compliant follow-up may still be needed.

What to buy—and what matters more than the brand
For multi-mound lawns, broadcast granular fire-ant bait is one option for yard-wide suppression. A small hand-powered spreader can help with application; Mississippi State University Extension cautions that a fertilizer spreader can apply too much bait. A site-labeled mound treatment may be useful for a selected nuisance mound. No single brand or product is established here as universally best. Check the current label for the permitted site, rate, weather restrictions, application directions, and pet-safety requirements.
FAQ
How do I get rid of fire ants fast?
For an urgent visible mound, use a product labeled for that site and follow its directions. For yard-wide suppression, broadcast bait can reach colonies you may not see, but it works slowly; Mississippi State University Extension says visible benefits can take two to eight weeks, depending on the bait.
Will fire ants come back after treatment?
They can. New queens and colonies from untreated surrounding areas may recolonize a treated yard. Inspect and repeat treatment only as permitted by the product label and local extension guidance.
What kills a fire-ant mound quickly?
A targeted mound product may act sooner than bait, but performance and directions depend on the product and its label. Do not assume that one treatment will eliminate every colony or prevent reinfestation.
Does broadcast bait reach mounds I cannot see?
Yes. Granular bait is collected by foragers and carried back to colonies, so broadcast bait can reach small or inconspicuous colonies that are easy to miss when treating only visible mounds.
Is fire-ant bait safe around dogs and cats?
Use only a product labeled for the site and follow its directions. Keep pets from eating bait or contacting treated areas until the label permits reentry, and store the product securely.
Are home remedies a reliable way to control fire ants?
UF/IFAS says many popular remedies and devices have not been scientifically proven to reduce fire-ant populations. Disturbing a colony may relocate it without killing its queen.
The Bottom Line
For yard-wide suppression, use fresh, label-approved granular bait and give it time to work; selectively treat urgent nuisance mounds with a product labeled for that site. Inspect for new activity and repeat treatment only as directed. Reinfestation is possible, so no single treatment guarantees fire ants will stay away permanently.
