The headline refers to fossils of the extinct Antarctic penguin Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, including exceptionally large isolated bones from Seymour Island. Estimates near 2 metres refer to body length for fragmentary specimens—not a confirmed standing height—so the exact “6-foot-8” claim needs that qualification.
The fossils are from the Eocene, tens of millions of years ago, when the Antarctic Peninsula region was warmer than it is today. They are not evidence that a living penguin was found frozen in modern Antarctica.
What was actually discovered?
A 2014 study described a relatively complete fossil skeleton of Palaeeudyptes klekowskii from the La Meseta deposits on Seymour Island, also known as Marambio Island. The researchers characterized it as the most complete penguin skeleton recovered from Antarctic sediments at that time.
That skeleton is distinct from other unusually large, isolated bones discussed in a separate 2014 study: a tarsometatarsus, the fused ankle-and-foot bone of a bird, and part of a humerus. The second study assigned those remains to P. klekowskii and estimated that the tarsometatarsus belonged to the largest and most massive penguin described at the time. The two studies describe different evidence, not a complete 6-foot-8 skeleton.

The species was named from Seymour Island fossils. Later finds and reassessments have added evidence about its size and the diversity of Antarctic fossil penguins.
How big was the giant penguin?
There is no single confirmed standing-height measurement for the largest Palaeeudyptes klekowskii. Ksepka and colleagues’ 2017 paper in Nature Communications discussed earlier estimates of about 1.5 metres in standing height for large individuals based on isolated limb bones, and estimates near 2.0 metres in body length for exceptionally large fragmentary specimens. Body length and standing height are different measurements.
The 6-foot-8 figure is therefore not a tape-measured height of a complete standing bird. The largest estimates rely on fragmentary bones and reconstruction; the exact specimen behind every popular version of the headline is not established by the available evidence.
As Ksepka and colleagues explain, estimating extinct penguin size from fragmentary remains is difficult because different species may have different proportions. Bone comparisons can support estimates, but they cannot make body length, height, and mass interchangeable.

Where and when did it live?
The fossils came from Seymour Island, off the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. The fossil-bearing rocks include Upper Eocene deposits.
Antarctica was warmer and more biologically productive during the Eocene than it is today. This was not the modern ice-covered landscape. The fossils show that several kinds of penguins lived in the region, though they do not provide a complete picture of P. klekowskii’s habitat or daily life.
Like other penguins, it was adapted for life in the ocean. Its exact behavior and lifestyle cannot be reconstructed in the same detail as those of living species.
Why did scientists call it a “colossus”?
Several extinct penguins grew much larger than any living species. The Emperor penguin is the largest penguin alive today, but claims about which fossil penguin was “largest” depend on what is compared: standing height, body length, or estimated mass.

Palaeeudyptes klekowskii was not an oversized Emperor penguin; it belonged to an extinct branch of the penguin family tree. The Natural History Museum’s 2023 account describes P. klekowskii as probably the tallest known penguin, while noting that an exceptional fossil of Anthropornis may have been taller. That makes “tallest” a qualified comparison, not a settled record.
| Penguin | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Palaeeudyptes klekowskii | Antarctic fossil penguin; estimates include about 1.5 m standing height for large individuals and near 2.0 m body length for exceptionally large fragmentary specimens, as discussed by Ksepka and colleagues in 2017. |
| Anthropornis | An exceptional Antarctic fossil may have been taller than P. klekowskii, according to the Natural History Museum’s 2023 account. |
| Kumimanu biceae | A New Zealand fossil species; the Natural History Museum’s 2023 account gives an estimated height of 1.77 m. This is not a measurement of P. klekowskii. |
These estimates concern different species and specimens, and may use different dimensions. They should not be treated as a single like-for-like ranking.
How can scientists estimate the size of an extinct penguin?
- Measure preserved bones. Researchers record the dimensions of available bones, which may be complete or fragmentary.
- Compare them with other penguins. Comparisons with living and fossil species help estimate body proportions.
- Reconstruct missing parts. Scientists use known anatomy and related fossils to infer what is not preserved.
- State the dimension and uncertainty. The result may be an estimate of standing height, body length, or mass; it is not necessarily a direct measurement of a whole animal.
As Ksepka and colleagues’ 2017 paper notes, different species may have different proportions. A headline that turns an estimated body length into a precise standing height can make uncertain evidence sound more exact than it is.
Is the species identification settled?
The 2014 skeleton was assigned to Palaeeudyptes klekowskii, but the diversity and classification of Antarctic fossil penguins continue to be studied.

A 2024 study described another Upper Eocene penguin skeleton from Seymour Island with Palaeeudyptes-like foot-bone traits, adding to questions about the group’s diversity. The evidence supports the presence of very large fossil penguins, while the boundaries and relationships of some named forms remain under investigation.
Was it the largest penguin ever?
That depends on the measurement, specimen, and estimate. Palaeeudyptes klekowskii is among the very large Antarctic fossil penguins, and it may have been the tallest, but the Natural History Museum notes a possible taller Anthropornis fossil. A responsible account should specify whether it means standing height, body length, or another estimate rather than declare an undisputed record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How old is the “discovery” story?
The skeleton and exceptionally large bones were described in 2014 studies. The headline is not evidence of a newly discovered living animal. Later research, including a 2024 study of a Seymour Island fossil, continues to refine understanding of Antarctic fossil-penguin diversity.
What did Antarctica’s giant penguins eat?
The evidence summarized here establishes fossil anatomy and size estimates, not a detailed menu for P. klekowskii. It is reasonable to describe it as a marine penguin, but the available studies do not establish specific prey items or a complete diet.

Frequently Asked Questions
Was a 6-foot-8 penguin really discovered in Antarctica?
No living penguin was found. The headline refers to fossil remains of the extinct Antarctic species Palaeeudyptes klekowskii. The largest estimates come from fragmentary bones, not a complete bird measured standing.
How tall was the giant Antarctic fossil penguin?
Ksepka and colleagues’ 2017 paper discusses earlier estimates of about 1.5 metres standing height for large P. klekowskii based on isolated limb bones. Estimates near 2.0 metres refer to body length for exceptionally large fragmentary specimens, not confirmed standing height.
When did Palaeeudyptes klekowskii live?
It lived in the Eocene, tens of millions of years ago, when the Antarctic Peninsula region was warmer than it is today.
Was it the tallest penguin ever?
It may have been the tallest known penguin, but the Natural History Museum’s 2023 account notes that an exceptional Anthropornis fossil may have been taller. The answer depends on the specimen and measurement being compared.
The Bottom Line
The “6-foot-8 penguin” was an extinct Antarctic penguin reconstructed from fossils, not a living bird found in the ice. The key distinction is that estimates near 2 metres refer to body length for exceptionally large fragmentary specimens, while earlier estimates for large individuals put standing height at about 1.5 metres. The exact size and tallest-penguin ranking remain uncertain.
