A water additive can be a useful extra when it is accepted for a specific claim, but it should not replace brushing or veterinary dental care. The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) calls brushing “the gold standard,” and Cornell veterinary guidance says water additives work best alongside brushing.
Brushing vs. water additives: what each one does

Why brushing is the better foundation
Brushing gives you a routine way to clean your dog’s teeth; an additive is something mixed into drinking water. The available evidence here does not establish a quantified head-to-head comparison between brushing and a particular additive across dogs. So it would be misleading to say that an additive works as well as brushing—or to claim a specific margin of superiority based on a direct trial.
VOHC explains that it reviews submitted data to determine whether products meet the clinical requirements for its Seal of Acceptance; it does not conduct the product tests itself. Acceptance applies to the specific claim shown for an individual product, not to every possible dental benefit. Check the current VOHC accepted-products list rather than treating “VOHC accepted” as a blanket endorsement.
How to brush your dog’s teeth
- Ask your veterinarian about suitability and technique. VOHC’s brushing guidance says the American Veterinary Dental College recommends checking with your veterinarian about whether its standardized brushing technique is appropriate for your pet. See VOHC’s brushing guidance.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for dogs. VOHC’s accepted-products list includes an ADA-compliant soft-bristle, flat-head toothbrush for plaque and tartar control. Choose an appropriate toothbrush and ask your veterinarian for help with fit or handling if needed. See VOHC’s accepted products.
- Pay particular attention to the cheek-facing surfaces of the upper teeth. VOHC notes that plaque and tartar accumulate most rapidly there.
When a water additive may be useful
A VOHC-listed additive can be a practical extra if brushing is part of your dog’s care routine. At the time represented by VOHC’s accepted-products page, its dog list included Bluestem Water Additive, Vetradent Liquid Water Additive, Vetradent Powder Water Additive, Plaqtiv+ Oral Care Water Additive and Skout’s Honor Water Additive, each listed for tartar control. The list can change, so verify the product and its exact claim on the current VOHC page before choosing one.

Do not infer that an additive controls plaque, treats existing disease or replaces brushing unless the specific product’s accepted claim says so. Cornell’s guidance is to use water additives in conjunction with brushing, not instead of it.

Brushing and an additive are home-care measures; neither takes the place of periodic veterinary oral examinations. AAHA’s dental guidelines explain that daily brushing does not remove the need for anesthetized examinations, dental radiographs and therapy when indicated. If you are concerned about your dog’s mouth, ask a veterinarian to assess it rather than relying on an additive or trying to address the problem yourself.
