Yes—some snakes eat fish, but it depends on the species. Garter snakes often hunt fish in water, and fish is also part of the eastern indigo snake’s documented diet. That does not make fish appropriate for every snake: many pet snakes are fed rodents or other whole prey, and fish alone can be nutritionally incomplete.
Which snakes eat fish?
Snakes are carnivores, but their prey varies with species and habitat. Fish is one item in a much broader menu that can also include insects, rodents, frogs, salamanders, birds, slugs, or other snakes. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources notes that snakes swallow food whole; its general prey list is not a feeding rule for every species (Indiana Department of Natural Resources; Texas Parks & Wildlife Department).
Garter snakes
Garter snakes are a clear fish-eating example. The National Park Service describes them as excellent swimmers that often hunt in water for amphibians and fish (National Park Service). Diet can also vary with size: Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife says larger garter snakes may eat fish, while smaller ones eat earthworms and slugs (Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife).
Eastern indigo snakes
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo lists birds, fish, and rodents among the foods eaten by its eastern indigo snakes. This is a species-specific example, not a general diet recommendation for other snakes (Smithsonian’s National Zoo).

- Effortless and Efficient Feeding Experience: As a snake hobbyist, you may often face troubles during the feeding process, such as insufficient grip strength and unstable gripping. Our snake feeder tongs have a serrated design that provides a better grip and reduces hand pressure during feeding, allowing you to complete feeding tasks easily and efficiently.
- Safe and Reliable Length Design: Safety is crucial when feeding snake animals. With a total length of 15 inches, our snake feeding tongs are long enough to ensure that you have enough distance between you and the snake to reduce the risk of accidental bites. This design allows you to feel more secure and at ease during the feeding process.
- Comfortable Non-Slip Handle Design: In order to provide a better using experience, we especially use a silicone sleeve on the handle of the snake feeder pliers to make sure that you can have a firm grip on it and not easy to slide when you use it. In this way, you will be able to carry out the feeding operation with more confidence and avoid accidents caused by hand sliding.
- Durable and Rustproof Material: Our snake feeding tongs are made of high quality stainless steel material with excellent rust resistance and durability. This means that even after prolonged use, it will still maintain its good quality and be able to cope with the challenges posed by the aquarium environment.
- Suitable for Many Applications: In addition to reptile tank feeding tasks, our snake feeding tongs are also suitable for other scenarios such as aquarium cleaning, picking up debris, and various other scenarios.
Does fish belong in a pet snake’s diet?
Only if it suits the snake’s species and an appropriate feeding plan. Merck Veterinary Manual notes that many commonly kept snakes are fed whole prey such as mice, rats, or chicks, while some species—including garter snakes—naturally eat other cold-blooded prey (Merck Veterinary Manual, reviewed September 2025). A fish-eating wild snake is not evidence that fish is suitable for an unidentified pet snake.
Fish is not automatically a complete food
For garter snakes, RSPCA care guidance includes defrosted freshwater fish as one possible part of a varied diet, alongside young mice or rats. It warns that feeding filleted fish alone can leave nutritional gaps, including insufficient calcium, and recommends consulting a reptile veterinarian about safe fish choices (RSPCA).

- High-Quality Material - Fri4free long tweezers are made of stainless steel, making them sturdy, resilient to corrosion, and built to last. These aquarium tweezers are not easily broken, corroded, or faded, and can be easily wiped clean. They are compatible with both saltwater and freshwater fish tank. We recommend rinsing the feeding tongs with fresh water and drying them after using them in a saltwater tank.
- Perfect Length - Both the straight and curved long tongs have an overall length of 10.6 inches (27cm), making them easy to use at any proper angle. The perfect length of these long tweezers ensures that your hands are protected from the sharp teeth, scratches, and bites of your beloved pets while you feed them. When you use them underwater to feed fish or for aquascaping, your hands will not easily get wet.
- Excellent Grip, Control, and Efficiency - These long feeding tongs respond well to finger pressure, providing a comfortable and secure grip. The serrated tips of the reptile feeding tongs make it easy to securely hold small objects like worms without worrying about slipping, providing precision aquascaping and feeding. The smooth, curved edges of the snake feeding tongs help reduce potential injuries to animals. The non-slip clip of the aquarium tongs makes it easy to pick up thin water plants.
- Universal Feeding - The aquarium tongs can be used with a range of reptile species and sizes, including snakes, ball pythons, jumping spiders, frogs, lizards, axolotls, and turtles, making them great bearded dragon fish tank accessories. They allow you to avoid directly touching the reptiles' food, reducing the chance of getting bitten. They are also great for accessing tight spots in terrariums, vivariums, and aquariums.
- Multiple Usage - The large tweezers, as aquascape tools, can also be used to hold mosses to be attached to rocks, driftwood, and other hardscape objects. The tweezers are widely applied to kitchens, gardening, and homes. They can also work as cooking tweezers and craft tweezers for jewelry making, repairs, and crafts.
There is also a fish-specific concern: Merck warns that some fish contain thiaminase, an enzyme that can cause thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. The risk depends on the fish and feeding plan, so this is not a reason to improvise a fish-based diet—or to assume every fish is unsuitable. Ask a reptile veterinarian to assess the species and the complete diet (Merck Veterinary Manual).

What to do before feeding fish to a pet snake
- Identify the snake’s species. Diets differ, and a general list of foods snakes eat cannot establish what an individual pet needs.
- Check the whole feeding plan with a reptile veterinarian. Ask whether fish is appropriate, which choices are safe, and how to avoid nutritional imbalance.
- Do not use filleted fish as the sole food. RSPCA guidance specifically cautions that it can lack nutrients such as calcium for garter snakes.
- Follow safe prey-handling advice. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine says most captive snakes are fed rodent prey and recommends pre-killed prey because live prey can pose risks (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine).
