What the Wanneroo wildlife-sign initiative involves
PerthNow reported on 16 December 2025 that Wanneroo councillors unanimously approved an initiative led by Councillor Jacqueline Huntley to install around 250 temporary wildlife-warning signs. The report named Wanneroo Road, Marmion Avenue, Neaves Road, Flynn Drive, Wattle Avenue, Breakwater Drive, Townsend Road, Hawkins Road, Ocean Reef Road and Elliot Road. Its description of the route count is internally inconsistent, so these are the roads named in the report rather than a confirmed total of ten. PerthNow’s report

Why the City says wildlife are at risk
PerthNow attributed the rationale to City administration, which said habitat loss and urban development were displacing wildlife onto roads. The administration also described risks to motorists and harm to fauna, including larger animals and birds such as Carnaby’s cockatoos. These are the City’s stated concerns as reported by PerthNow, not independently verified measurements of wildlife movement or collision rates.

The council also sought a discussion paper on reducing wildlife trauma and a coordinated, compassionate framework for cooperation among State, local and community stakeholders. PerthNow said a further report was anticipated before the end of June; the sources cited here do not establish whether it was published.
What is confirmed—and what is not
- Confirmed in City updates: seasonal wildlife caution signs were being installed and fauna monitoring was underway in September 2026.
- Reported in December 2025: a plan for around 250 signs and an expected cost of about $12,000. The City’s September 2026 update did not confirm either figure.
- Completion date: PerthNow’s article body referred to an end-of-December schedule, while its image caption said the end of January. The timing is conflicting, and the later City update did not state a completion date.
- Effectiveness: the cited sources provide no before-and-after collision figures and no finding that the signs reduced wildlife-vehicle collisions.
The City says fauna monitoring is intended to help it understand wildlife activity and support conservation. Monitoring activity alone does not establish whether signs prevent collisions.

Seasonal wildlife hazards for Wanneroo drivers
Turtles crossing roads in spring
The City says southwestern snake-necked turtles may cross roads during spring nesting migrations. Drive carefully near wetlands, especially in rain, and watch for turtles on or near the road. The City advises keeping at least 15 metres away from turtles and not feeding or handling them.
Other spring risks
The same City update notes that magpies breed between August and October and snakes become more active as the weather warms. These are separate seasonal hazards; the notice does not present them as evidence about vehicle collisions or the effectiveness of road signs. It recommends slowing down and staying alert near bushland and wetlands.
