How Smart Are Pigs? What Research Shows About Their Cognition

Pigs demonstrate learning, memory and task-specific problem-solving, but varied methods and limited replication mean there is no reliable overall pig intelligence score.

Pigs can learn and remember in tested settings, solve some problems, and respond differently to social situations. But there is no validated pig IQ score or reliable overall ranking: studies measure different abilities with different tasks, and the methods still need more validation and replication.

What does “smart” mean for a pig?

Intelligence is not a single ability that one puzzle or maze can measure. Pig-cognition studies examine separate domains—including learning, memory, spatial navigation, problem-solving and social behavior. A pig’s performance on one task tells researchers about the ability and conditions that task tests; it does not produce a general intelligence score.

That distinction matters when interpreting results. A task may depend on whether the pig notices a cue, remembers a route, responds to a reward, or is comfortable in a particular social setting. Those demands are not interchangeable, so success in one test should not be treated as proof of human-like reasoning, language or self-awareness.

What abilities have pigs demonstrated?

Learning and memory

Studies reviewed by Gieling, Nordquist and van der Staay report that pigs and minipigs can perform learning and memory tasks. Researchers have used different behavioral tests to examine what animals learn and retain. However, the authors also identify a major limitation: validated, domain-specific paradigms for pig cognition are lacking, and results have not been established as reliably replicable. Problem-solving and navigation

Pigs have been tested with tasks such as T-mazes, reversal learning, puzzle boxes and holeboards. Each task measures a particular response under particular conditions. For example, solving a puzzle box is evidence of performance on that problem-solving task, not by itself evidence of a broad, human-like form of reasoning.

Social behavior

A 2020 experiment examined whether early-life socialisation affected later cognition in domestic pigs. The study found differences in behavior on a social-preference task and an effect over the reversal-learning test. It found no treatment effect on the food-reward T-maze or puzzle-box task. The mixed pattern suggests that early experience may relate to some social or learning outcomes, not that socialisation raises pigs’ intelligence across the board. Read the study in Scientific Reports.

How strong is the evidence?

Ede and Parsons’ 2023 systematic review examined cognitive tasks used as measures of pig welfare. It included 36 studies and identified 11 different cognitive tasks. Judgment-bias tasks, learned approach or aversion, and holeboard tests were among the most commonly used.

Across the papers in that review, 44% reported findings supportive of the authors’ expectations, 33% reported no significant difference following an intervention, and 21% reported mixed outcomes or a study that refuted the authors’ predictions. These figures describe outcomes in the reviewed papers—not the share of pigs that are intelligent, and not a score of pig cognitive ability. The reviewers point to heterogeneity, limited standardisation and the need for further validation and replication. Read the systematic review in Frontiers in Veterinary Science.

Can pigs be ranked against dogs, children or other animals?

Not on the evidence summarized here. A meaningful comparison would require comparable tasks that measure the same abilities under suitable conditions, as well as a way to account for differences in species, motivation and testing context. The cited studies do not establish a validated cross-species intelligence ranking, so claims that pigs are “as smart as” a particular age of child or another species go beyond what this evidence shows.

What does enrichment have to do with cognition?

Enrichment is relevant because researchers have studied how housing and interventions relate to pig welfare and performance on cognitive tasks. Housing enrichment was the most common intervention category in the 2023 systematic review. That makes enrichment a useful welfare context for understanding cognition, but it does not show that a particular toy makes pigs smarter. The cited review does not test specific retail products.
