They were likely fledging and trying to reach the ocean to feed independently. The young emperor penguins filmed at Atka Bay in January 2024 faced an unusually high route to the water: a cliff about 50 feet (15 meters) above the sea. Scientists think they may have been raised on a permanent ice shelf, but the precise route that brought them to the edge is unknown.
What happened at Atka Bay?
Filmmaker Bertie Gregory and the Secrets of the Penguins crew captured the scene by drone in January 2024 at Atka Bay, on the edge of the Weddell Sea in West Antarctica. National Geographic reported that a group of a couple hundred chicks gathered at the top of the bluff and entered the sea below. The report describes it as the first video footage of emperor-penguin chicks leaping from such a height. National Geographic’s report
The chicks were months old and nearing fledging—the transition to life at sea. Their down had to be replaced by waterproof adult feathers, and their parents had already gone to sea. The likely immediate reason to descend was to reach the ocean and begin feeding for themselves. That is an explanation offered in the reporting, not a direct measurement of what the birds were thinking.
Why was the jump so high?
Emperor-penguin juveniles usually enter the water from floating sea ice only a couple of feet above it. The Atka Bay cliff was roughly 50 feet (15 meters) high, making this a very different and unusual entry route.

Scientists quoted in the report think the chicks may have been raised on the permanent ice shelf rather than on floating sea ice. British Antarctic Survey scientist Peter Fretwell, who has studied the colony using satellite imagery, said he sometimes sees tracks toward the cliff. He suggested the group might have followed one or two wandering adult penguins in the wrong direction. The footage does not establish how the chicks reached the bluff or confirm that explanation.
Conservation biologist Michelle LaRue of the University of Canterbury, who advised the filmmakers but did not witness the jump, interpreted the scene as chicks needing to get into the ocean despite the daunting drop. Her reaction captures the apparent predicament, but it is an interpretation rather than a measured behavioral finding. National Geographic’s account and expert comments

Was climate change responsible?
The scientists quoted about this particular event did not think it was directly caused by climate change. Fretwell raised a separate possibility: declining Antarctic sea ice could lead more emperor penguins to breed on permanent ice shelves, potentially making high entries into the sea more common. That is a possible future consequence of changing habitat, not proof that warming caused these chicks to jump.
A 2024 peer-reviewed assessment by Peter T. Fretwell used Sentinel-2 satellite imagery to examine colony impacts from early fast-ice loss over 2018–2023. It found 19 of 66 colonies affected in 2022 and 14 in 2023; the paper describes 2023 as the second-worst year in its short record. Fretwell cautions that the relationship between overall Antarctic sea-ice extent and breeding failure is indicative rather than direct, because regional and local conditions matter. How unusual was this route?
| Feature | Usual fledging entry | Atka Bay footage |
|---|---|---|
| Height above water | Only a couple of feet, according to experts quoted by National Geographic | About 50 feet (15 meters), as reported by National Geographic |
| Platform | Floating sea ice | A cliff at the edge of a permanent ice shelf is the suspected route |
| Evidence | Described as the usual route by experts | Rarely filmed event; the chicks’ exact route to the cliff is unconfirmed |
The footage shows chicks entering the sea from a striking height; it does not establish how many survived or whether the route will become routine. It is best understood as a rare observation of fledging under unusual local conditions, rather than evidence that emperor-penguin chicks normally leap from cliffs.
