The bear found in Siberia in 2020 was not a cave bear, as early reports suggested. A later scientific description identified it as a brown bear (Ursus arctos) that lived about 3,500 years ago. Its remarkably complete, soft-tissue-preserving carcass is notable as the first mummified brown-bear carcass reported from the New Siberian Islands—but published research does not establish it as the best-preserved bear ever discovered.
Where was the bear found?
Reindeer herders found the carcass in permafrost on Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island, part of the New Siberian Islands in northeast Siberia, in 2020. The 2024 scientific description gives the discovery location and year.
What kind of bear was it?
It was a brown bear, Ursus arctos. An announcement in 2020 initially identified the remains as a cave bear, but that was a preliminary interpretation. The later scientific accounts identify the specimen as a brown bear, not an Ice Age cave bear.
Why did the identification change?
The 2024 description reports that researchers examined the specimen using comparative morphological analysis, computed tomography (CT), and DNA sequencing. A 2023 journal abstract also identifies it as a brown bear and describes morphological, CT, and ancient-DNA analyses. These later scientific assessments supersede the initial announcement.

How old is the Siberian bear mummy?
Researchers estimate that the bear lived approximately 3,500 years before present, placing it in the Middle Holocene. The 2024 Ursus description and 2023 Doklady Biological Sciences abstract both give an age of about 3.5 thousand years. This is an approximate estimate, not a precise calendar date.
Why is the find remarkable?
The researchers describe it as the first mummified brown-bear carcass reported from the New Siberian Islands. Earlier Yakutian brown-bear finds were mainly skulls and bones, making a carcass with soft tissues especially unusual for the region.

That regional novelty does not prove a global record. The available scientific descriptions support calling it a rare, unusually complete find; they do not establish that it is the “most well-preserved bear ever discovered.” Such a ranking would require a defined comparison of preservation, completeness, age, and other specimens worldwide.
What is known about how it died?
The published accounts cited here do not establish the bear’s cause of death or definitively explain how it reached Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island. Those details remain unresolved, so claims about them would be speculation.

What did researchers say when it was first found?
In 2020, molecular paleontologist Lena Grigorieva of the North-Eastern Federal University was quoted by Live Science saying, “This is the first and only find of its kind — a whole bear carcass with soft tissues.” The statement reflected the original announcement and its cave-bear interpretation; it is not evidence for the later species identification or a worldwide preservation record.
